Good. God. Incidentally, I recently heard Pennsylvania referenced thusly: "Pennsyltucky--it's Philadelphia and Pittsburg and Kentucky in between."

Sadly, you are correct. While I do not live in that God-forsaken area, I feel the pain in your typed words. Believe me.

A common term in these here parts. Not sure just how many punchlines are available here, but...

The original quote was from James Carville, when he was campaign manager for Bob Casey's [successful] run for PA Governor (1986) "Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between." There are those who believe (and rightly so) that Pittsburgh is really part of Ohio. Because of the famous Civil War battle, many are surprised that Gettysburg ISN'T in Virginia. ------------------ Life is Short ... Make Fun of It. 400 Beers

They do that in older bars around here with "Sweet Caroline" and it is just as bad. No clue how that started but Mr Beave does it now and it is enough to keep me from going to bars with him. He drowns the codgers out.I've been in the Susquahanna area. Saw a big reptile farm and a Trading Post store, en route to Marine Corps marathon. Saw some sweet looking campsites along the river, too.

I admit it, I did it once. Once.

Yes, that was Carville's first major win as a campaign manager. During the Clinton campaign he was referred to as "strategist" (David Wilhelm was the campaign manager.)

A van down by the river does not constitute a campsite.

"Sweet Caroline" is for some reason played at all of the RedSox games. Not being a sports fan I am not sure why. Lately then our local bar (not RedBones mind you) has started playing it when they want me to leave - honestly. The owner puts it on, people start singing along loudly and I leave - it actually works!

Ha- it was an actual campground but there were vans parked on the river, so......yeah. Point taken,Randymar. As for the local "Sweet Caroline" thing, these folks stand on bar stools and the bar, arms spread, singing at the top of their lungs. It is the absolute moodkiller for the entire evening. There is no explanation for it, either, nor is there any beer that would make this tolerable. I think they want us to leave so their kind can have the whole place to themselves.

Do they gather around, point at you and then the door??? That would be a bad sign.

Actually, 60 minutes or somesuch did a piece on that a while ago. Turns out, the guy in charge of the music at fenway just liked the song, no other particular reason.

Well, I am back from my running trip to Erie,PA. Gosh, it was hellishly hot. I found a case of assorted Victory beers for $35 and there is Golden Monkey in there and Hop Devil! A case of GM was $42!!! I start my vacation Saturday and am planning to have them then. You had to see my excitement at finding this beer, based on all of your raves. I literally beamed every time I saw the case in the truck. I also saw Dogfish beer. You had to see me, because I can't get these beers (yet) locally and it was like meeting "pen pals" for the first time. I greeted the cases with familiarity, which amused the hell out of my sister to no end. Thanks also for the tips on my keyboard. Because my work is numeric, I've reconfigged it a bit so I can't hit what is enter on most keyboards anymore. I am indeed a dork, but this dork is in possession of Golden Monkey! I am smiling!

.... and this is how two threads tie together ...While I was in the dentist chair Friday afternoon, I was treated to BOTH "Piano Man" and "Sweet Caroline" No place to run, no way to hide. Having my plaque scraped, never felt so refreshing. [This message has been edited by randymar (edited Jul-17-2006).]

LT, you seriously rock! I must have the bacon bandages as soon as possible. What a fantastic site!Randymar- that has to be the most perverse thread karma ever known to man, to hear both of those songs whilst pinned in the dentist chair like a bug. I would have screamed. I've got Golden Monkey! I've got Golden Monkey! I've got Golden Monkey! I've got Golden Monkey! (happy dance) We saw a carload pull up to that beer store: 5 grimy kids and a ma and pa. Dad came out with a cold case of a cheap beer and ma had one immediately, as they drove off. Ma said to kids "Unless yer dying, I don't wanna hear nothin'...." It was 10 am.

At 10:05am, with 80% humidity and 90 degrees of sweltering heat, on the way to 100+ degrees today, a tall, cold, Hop Devil (or Golden Monkey) would be a fine, fine thing today...

I've got a six-pack of Circus Boy cooling in the fridge, waiting for me to say "Show Time!!!"Funny story about that ... I bought a case Friday night. We were going downnashore Saturday afternoon. D'Wife asked, "Are you bring a six of the Circus Boy for Pete and John?" Without a second's hesitation, I chuckled, "I'm not bringing that down for them!!! I'll get a twelve pack of Sam Adams [Summer Ale] on the way." Not that Pirate Pete and John the Parrothead wouldn't enjoy CBoy; they just wouldn't get "don't you DARE drink it out of the bottle"-ness of it. To give him credit, John was surprised that his Sierra Nevada Pale Ale had twist-offs. He'd never considered it a possibility, and has been using a bottle opener for all these years.

Congrats TrailOBite! Just noticed your mini-quest has ended.Has enyone else here recently been "de-monkeyed" yet? No disrespect oh Southern one. But when it hits 100F you got two options; a summer wheatie or a kalik (kalik is a personal flyfisher related thingie, know its not worthy of being named with the heady line-up proposed by others.)
