Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale - gorgeous. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar is great, too. Doesn't Smuttynose do one?

Had my first Brooklyn Beer a few weeks ago - Pennant Ale. A friend brought it back from New York. Not bad, but obviously not the best they've got.

She was the Beer Thread's first "Hot Chick" ... Then you showed up, took over that role for yourself and made it what it is today.

Okay - Brown Ales - this is my current batch of homebrew and as I said before, am using Williamette and Fuggles hops. Partial mash with 40 Lovibond crystal and a small amount of chocolate malts. So far, so good.I imagine that I will take this recipe and tweak it to resemble a brown ale that I prefer, but of course have not really drunk enough brown ales to know which one that would be - unexplored territory. Last night did a tasting of Old Brown Dog (that is the Smuttynose Brown) and Wolavers (Otter Crrek). I preferred the Old Brown Dog - has better flavoring hops (Williamette and Cascade) and a nutty flavor, plus there is a really great dog on the label. Wolaver's has better aroma hops, but they are not as tasty. Brooklyn and Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale are on my list. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar - I'll give it a try - hopefully the hazelnut has not done to this beer what it has done to coffee. Newcastle I have had enough of and it is not near the top of my list.

It hasn't, and it doesn't scream hazelnut. It's really a very natural combination, and it's very pleasant. quote: Newcastle I have had enough of and it is not near the top of my list.
Yeah. Newcastle Brown has been deliberately reduced in complexity to appeal to a wider (read: American) audience. Shame, ain't it?

In accordance with Beer Thread rule #1, I just wanna ask what everyone's reading? Before I got my Pirate! books, I bought a copy of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's "Shadow of the Wind" and it is knocking my flipping socks off. It's a book about books first of all, so that's enough for any bibliophile, but every page is filled with mouth-watering mystery and old-world intrigue. I'm no Stephen King fan, but he wasn't lying when he called it "one gorgeous read" (and yeah, it puts Eco to shame ; )

Hey!!! The more you dis Eco - the stronger my attachment. It's a personality disorder that comes with being short - stubborness.I just finished Vonnegut "Man Without a Country" - short but profound. Read the first Harry Potter - it would be great if I were 13, but I found the whole orphan thing, good is food and bad is bad a bit trite. Now I am on "A Void" – it is amazing, thanks for the recommendation. Who is Carlos Ruiz Zafon?

Ha - yeah, don't get me wrong, I thought "Island of the Day Before" and "Name of the Rose" were great... quote: I just finished Vonnegut "Man Without a Country" - short but profound. I suspect he is someone who will soon become more of a known name in dorky book-people circles. See, now even you've heard of him. I will try "Man Without a Country". Favorite short-but-profound book: Grendel.

"Ride of My Life" by Mat Hoffman. We're building a half-pipe out in the woods and I'm looking for some pointers.

More of a known name? You mean everyone doesn't read Vonnegut. Actually I have been reading him since I was a Sophmore in HS - the beauty of short-term memory is that I can re-read his stuff and it sounds brand new.
I one read Player Piano while I was waiting to get my lisence renewed at the Speedy DMV. Three hours later and many jests at over-industrialization, I was renewed and ready to go. It got to the point where we were all cheering for each other when our numbers were called. Hi Ho

Galbraith Brewing Company - Brewpub2 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden, Auckland Ph +64.9.379.3557 Fax +64.9.307.6721 View Map Opened in 1995 as New Zealand's first modern time brewery producing cask conditioned ales. The brewery is attached to Galbraiths Alehouse. The ales are produced with English malts and New Zealand hops. All beers are cask conditioned and served by hand pump at 10-12 C. Sounds like they might brew some nice stubbies. New Zealand grows hops? [This message has been edited by La Tortuga (edited Jan-06-2006).]

I had nothing interesting to drink this weekend ... just Cinderella Beer.I did, however, get onto the track at the gym again on Saturday afternoon for an easy 3 mile run and twelve mile ride. My knee feels great, and I have no worries about it going out on me two miles down the raod, out in the scary woods. This week I might start doing my morning runs again, and resume burning off those 400 Beers (which my be more like 5 or 6 hundred now.) ------------------ Life is Short ... Make Fun of It. I am planning a half-marathon in March and many lay off the suds for the 6 weeks prior to this event. Unless of course I am given some compelling reasons as to why this would be a bad idea... Edited to see if I could make this post prettier. [This message has been edited by La Tortuga (edited Jan-09-2006).]

You will miss out on tasting all those beers whose names end in "-ator." Just a thought.

I haven't run in about 5 months now, since I badly broke my small toe. It still hurts a little to walk on, but it's getting much better. That's all I have for running. Beer: Full Sail "Session" beer. Pleasant, un-assuming, mostly-forgettable, but you can play rock-paper-scissors with the caps (some sort of diabolical scheme to make us drink more. That, plus the name, plus the fact that it only comes in 12-packs. I am merely a pawn...)

Why do you have to quit drinking so long before a race - or even at all? I can't put my hands to it, but I'm sure I've read essays about how beer is the "runners drink", even right up until - and after - the big day...

I think it's in here somewhere: http://www.allaboutbeer.com/features/232beer&running.html I may be wrong. I've been wrong before.

Phew - that was a scary moment there - I am back on track now. I knew that I could count on you two to talk me out of this sheep-like behavior.
-ator beers - can I have a list please? I almost forgot - this is a statemnt I completely agree with. You gots to love a marathoner who restricts him/her-self to 2 oreo cookies for a snack. "Ironically, many recreational runners who religiously restrict and monitor every detail of their diet and lifestyle are often quite unhealthy." The only Eliot Lounge that I know of around here is a pretty respectable place - maybe there are two of them.

Why is it always the pinky toe???
I broke mine at a water park in Palm Springs. The concrete on the pool deck was that superfine kind that gets extra-slick when wet. A liittle brat - who probably should have known better - came running toward me to get into the wave pool. As I turned to avoid him, my foot skidded into a joint in the concrete that was about half an inch off flush. By the end of the day, it had turned black & blue and swelled to approx. egg-size. I iced it down with a bag of frozen peas when I got home. I spent the next day hobbling around Disneyland. Back in January, Mariel and I were playing Hide & Seek just before bath time. I ran up stairs to hide in our master closet. As I looked down the steps, to see if she was gaining on me (because she cheats) I took the turn into the bedroom a little wide and smashed my foot into the gap between the door and the doorjamb. I dove onto the bed and assumed a fetal position, clutching my foot. I think my exact response was "Ow." I've been bumped up so much and so often, that even excruciating pain rarely elicits strong language anymore. Of course "The Apprentice" was about to start, so I hobbled downstairs, poured myself a pint of Flying Dog K9 Cruizer, and put me feet up. When I finally did look at the injury, my diagnosis was "It's not swollen up enough already to be broken, probably just sprained, but you're going to lose that nail." After a couple days, the bruising and swelling subsided. "Little toes...what good are they?"
Without them, we could only hang eight ... and that just doesn't sound right.
