QUOTE OF THE MONTH "We were promoting sameness and increasingly going lowbrow. It is as if we were promoting beer as the official beverage of the knuckleheads," - Norman Adami, CEO of Miller Brewing --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Actually, the knuckleheads were doing a pretty good job, all on their own. You could have saved yourself some money there, Norman. ------------------ Life is Short ... Make Fun of It. 400 Beers

Two more from the Mendocino flock:Blue Heron Pale Ale Herons are great big birds, They can be white or grey. They don't fly around too much, But stand by the pond all day. Herons love the water Although they don't go in. They don't float and can't paddle, Their legs are just too thin. Herons just stand in the mud. Eating fish and frogs. Occasionaly walking slowly around, Among the reeds and logs. Herons have big wings and beaks, Bigger than eagles, I'm sure, They could be the kings of the pond, But they really don't seem to care. Herons take things easy, And treat another bird as a friend. They don't bother anyone else. And nobody bothers with them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A very pale, pale ale. It's almost Hefeweizen pale, with that same lemony finish. As with the Red Tail, a thin non-lingering head. I remember when Pete's - in their massive line extension phase - put out a pale ale like this. It was also nearly lager-like. I called it Ghost Ale, because there really wasn't anything there.

White Hawk Original IPANow, THIS is what I expected the Heron to be. A light copper color, again with big head that thins out quickly. Not extraordinarily hoppy, little bit piney even, with some citrus and honey. I'd put it even with, say, Harpoon; but it's way below DFH, HopFish or HopDevil. I can't remember the last time I had a regular old pale ale. As much as I hate to admit it, I do get stuck in beer grooves - I've been in the IPA one for months, now. Having said that, I polished off a 6 of Victory Prima Pils over my three-day weekend-o'-Simon. It was up in the 90s all weekend, so it seemed right. But it is so much better than right - love it.

Didn't LT try to tempt you into a Brown Ale a couple of weeks ago???

Heck yeah she did! And now please allow me to eat my words... A local brewery here called Real Ale does a mix-pack of 3 of their best-selling beers: Pale Ale, Rye Ale, and Brown Ale. I bought them that same day we'd been talking about it. The brown ale is really fruity, with that soft, nutty maltiness that would make you declare "brown, a-thankyew" if you were in a blind taste-test. I say next time we go beer shopping we all delve as far from our comfort zones as possible (within reason - no cream ales or malt likkas) and come back and report our findings. I'll scope out the Dortmunders - maybe even a Kolsch.

I haven't had the Mendocino brews in many years. I seem to remember liking them a lot, but Randy it sounds as if you found them too weak?I enjoyed the text.

Not really weak ... Red-Tail, Blue Heron and White Hawk were 6%, 6% and 7% ABV, respectively ... the White Hawk even has a big "7%" in a red band on the corner; as if to say ... "Don't F*ck with this. It has a bite."They were just a little thin in body, I guess. Watery. Which would explain why they weren't as rich in color as I'm used to from DFH, HopFish or HopDevil. Strong, but watery.

I never really caught on to the % or ABV thing - care to take a stab at an explanation?

ABV: Alcohol By VolumeMore is naturally, well, more. Not always good for the taste though. Some Barleywines are so loaded up, you get that head shiver from just a sip. For instance (according to ratebeer.com): BBChocStout - 8.7% Brooklyn Brown - 5.6% Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale - 5% SN Portsmouth Lager - 4.5% DFH :60 IPA - 6% MH Blind Faith - 5.6% Victory Hop Devil - 6.7% Victory Strom King Imperial Stout - 9.1% Victory Old Horizontal - 10.1% Darker doesn't alway mean stronger, as those Guinness rookies will find out on Friday. Nor is ale necessarily stronger than lager. Guinness Original / Extra Stout - 4.5% Sam Adams Boston Lager - 4.9%

After a very satisfying evening at the gym, I wussed out and did NOT go for either Eye of the Hawk Select Ale nor Black Hawk Stout. At 8% ABV, would be too strong to get into at 9:00 on a school night. It was also still unseasonably warm down here. Too much so for a stout to be anything but an annoyance. So, I chose the HopFish. Don't worry, LT ... I ran more miles than beers.

Thanks, Coach. I want to do my best. With this sudden re-freeze, I may hit the Black Hawk Stout tonight, but I must keep tomorrow's weather in mind, because you know, the miles don't run themselves. Okay, I'm getting a little carried away with the running talk, but I'm feeling very re-energized lately, and want to share. Do not worry though, my friends, it will not affect my performance as your editor-in-chief. I just may be a little bit more out of breath, and a little more thirsty, while sitting at the bar, is all. And I may need to stand up, lean on the rail and stretch my calves every now and then as well.

When I was in Florida, the "sea cows" would cruise up the Intercoastal every day around lunch time. We would throw lettuce, tomatoes and oranges out to them.Such wonderfully docile creatures; 2,000 pounds of floating Zen.

<<<< I AM NOT HAPPY!!! >>>> quote: from RealBeer.com A different sort of St. Pauli girlThe St. Pauli girl has a different look in a new advertising campaign for the German beer. Instead of featuring the traditional St. Pauli girl in German attire the advertisements in March issues of magazines including Backpacker, Esquire, FHM, Giant, Maxim, Men’s Health, Playboy, Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated show images that are part girl/part beer. From the press release: St. Pauli Girl’s new national print advertising campaign features sophisticated, sexy, yet recognizable female forms that morph into appetizing beer images. Each image in the campaign brings the brand “to life” with maximum stopping power in the magazines that the ads are scheduled to appear. Furthermore, the campaign’s visual treatment reflects one of the Brand’s core equities by extending the appeal of the St. Pauli Girl posters into print advertising in a new and collectible way. “The experience consumers have with the St. Pauli Girl brand is personal,” said Bill Eisner, partner at Nonbox, the agency that developed the ads. “We wanted to create a visually and emotionally appealing page where they were allowed to fill in the blanks with their own experiences.” The tagline for the campaign is “You Never Forget Your First Girl.”

Last summer, Mariel and I found a small box turtle in my garden. She named her "Buddy Girl" and we kept her for a month. She was Mariel's first veternary patient.
