Hi everyone,

I've been through 3 pairs of headphones in the last few months. My problem is that I cannot find a pair that will stay tight in my ear while running.

I found a great deal here for "Altec Lansing High Definition Noise Free Headphone Etymotic Research Earbuds - IM616"

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202046156

Looking for suggestions here before I pull the trigger on yet another pair... thanks in advance for your opinion!

I think those are a mistake if you run outside because of these phrases in the description:

  • "dead-quiet noise isolation."
  • "this earplug design blocks out external sound"

I have headphones, which aren't earbud style, that are similar (not identical. i can't find mine online right now) in style to these. They've held up pretty well for ~1 year:

But the ear-hook-thingie does kind of interfere with my sunglass ear thingies.

Hopefully someone else can give you a better suggestion. But I do think noise isolation headphones are a bad idea for running for safety reasons- you need to be able to hear dogs, cars, other runners coming up behind you, and potential attackers.

Or try and run without headphones.

Or try and run without headphones.

What in the OP's post suggested he or she doesn't sometimes run without headphones?

I use over-the-ear Sony's similar to the ones potock2010 mentioned; I think mine are the Sony MDR-J11G model. Target usually has them. They work pretty well and are good for allowing much of the ambient sounds in provided you're not cranking music to ear damaging levels. Not all of course, you have to be smart about when and where you choose to use headphones as always.

I end up replacing them a couple times a year due to internal corrosion from sweat, so the low price is nice. (Same thing happened to $50 Sennheiser sport headphones too)

Ear buds will stay in if you put the little foamy covers on them.

my experience is that the foamy earbuds are pretty useless. I use a pair from Sony that have 3 different sized "rubber" inserts that fit in the ear
canal nice and snug. On my second pair, they last about a year before the sweat eats away the cable housing. Also, a nice feature is that the cord is only about 2ft long and comes with another 3 foot or so extension

While they are not for everybody...I love these wrap around sport earphones.
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PMX70-Stereo-Neckband-Headphones/dp/B000FJD5IA/

I run fairly fast and they stay put in my ears and the sound is good. To me they are not uncomfortable. Once you are running you don't even know they are there...and this from someone who got tired of the earbuds falling out.

Good Luck
Scott

I had custom ear molds made that slip over most in-ear headphones. They are very comfortable and cut out a lot of excess noise so the volume of my mp3 player is actually lower than before my custom molds. A lot of audiologist who make ear molds for hearing aids also provide this service.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will first try a cheap pair of over-the-ear headphones from best buy or something and return if I do not like the fit... then I found the Sennheiser "twist to fit" ear buds, which will be my next step in this, what seems to be, never ending quest!

For me nothing has come close to this for all round sports usage. The rest are either not comfortable or just slip out

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-shs3200-SHS3200-Headphones-over-the-ear/dp/B000FQJMAI

You've tried the rest now try the best or something.

Which part of the "Suggestions for ear bud headphones that will stay put while running" phrase did you not understand? Take it to the kid forum where you like to snivel!
