Hey gang...A general question for anyone who would like to chip in and answer... Is it reasonable to train for a HM with three actual running days (two 50-ish minute runs and one progressively longer run) and one or two cross training sessions per week? My concern, as many of you know, is getting to the starting line healthy... Thoughts??? Thanks! Dan ------------------ http://therealgoindownsouth.blogspot.com

Jeep725 - Nice brisk run!! BugsMom - Glad that you're happy now! I did my last 2 miles Sunday in the rain! It was cool but worried about my iPod! Peg312 - Hey sorry you're having to work so late!! Just run when you can and stick with us, we'll help pull you along! BTW, you may not have had the time to notice but we have another Houston area runner join us! Francesca24 - Yes, at least you did get out there! Tawny - Losing a big post, I'm sure we've all had that happen! I once got to the gym only to realize I didn't have my running shoes with me! Doh! Have a good run! Sheila - Glad your quads are almost back to feeling normal. Have a great day! Dan - I think that 3 running and 1 cross training day is okay as long as one of the days is an LSD and the cross training involves a good cardio workout. Joe

DanI did my half in Aug and ran the entire distance - granted I wasn`t the fastest - but I enjoyed it and I was healthy I ran 3 days a week Tues Thur and one day over the weekend - the week dat runs started at 3 miles and progressed to 5 or maybe 6 The long run started at 6 and peaked at 10 miles I x trained twice a week - at least 30 mins of bike - usually closer to 1 hour - and 1 hour of boxing - I would box in a Friday - it was a leg resting cardio workout - it is a great core body workout and it was great for working my upper body. I also lifted weights twice a week So .. short answer - yes you can run a 1/2 on 3 runs per week - but you need to do other stuff too

See, therein lies my issue... I really do not do much else right now other than run and some core work (pushups, abs, back stuff)... I really need to spread myself out a bit and cross train... I think my body with thank me in the long run and, hey, if I feel up for it down the line, I can always add a fourth day of running later on... Any other thoughts? Hi Dan -When I first started training I was running 4 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays with my long run on Saturday) and going to the gym for a weightlifting class Tuesday and Thursdays and then a yoga/pilates class on Wednesdays. It was fine for a while, but it started to feel like too much as my runs started to increase. I tried my best to maintain the schedule, but then I moved in the middle of training and had to give up the time at the gym - for the past 6 weeks I've just been running (3 times a week). I know there's a definite advantage to cross training during training and there's a part of me that wished I had found a way to keep up with the gym, but I couldn't find the time/energy. That said, after my last training run on Monday (18km/11miles), I was a little wobbly that afternoon going up and downstairs but woke up the next day feeling fine.

Hi Dan, I did only 3 days a week for most of my training but did either some cycling, or a 4th run each week from about 2 months out.At 56 I find it is hard to run more than that, either I get tired or sore if I don't get enough rest. I got into a pattern of feeling guilty, so running faster or harder or longer on the days I did run, with no easy days. I am sure this is not an ideal way to train! We will find out this Sunday if it worked for me, but I would encourage you to run 4 times at least most weeks. If this is hard on you then swim, row, cycle or lift weights at least one other day to supplement the running.

Forgot to add, Gale is going to have to be our "Group Expert", she is just tearing these things up! I have lost track of how many she has done now, but she's a running machine! Simon.

Peg, so I hope your run went great! My son called today and is comming by , he's in from fourt Polk Loisianna so I'm bagging mine to spend time with him.Joe, I wondered about rain and Ipods. What about your Garmin? Have you gotten it wet or do you wear it when it's raining? I've been reading some of the race reports from Chicaco and feal so bad for those people. They had a tuff race. It's been so hot and for them to run out of water and then blame the runners saying they used it to pour on themselves and waisted it. I thought thats what you do. I'm glad every race I've ever been in has been plenty fluids. i've been in them that wasn't marked right, to short or to long, no mile markers, a bunch of little things but nothing like that. I hope our new runners realize this is not the norm and races take very good care of us. Anyway, to the people who are running their first half, ask the race director the night of your packet pick up about water stations porta pots, Ipods, anything you can think of and on Race day you'll be relaxed and ready. Not tring to sound like a know it all just don't want that peticular race to frighten anyone. Don't have time to edit so if spelling is bad sorry. ------------------ Chuck Go Gators

Hey gang...Sitting here, relaxing with a few raw carrots, a bottle of ice cold water, and ice cold ice on my shins... 52:06 run outside after work today... I have no idea how far I ran and, to show how much of a running-OCD-geek I am, that bugs me... I need something tangible at all times... If I do not know how far (distance) I have run and for how long (time), I feel like I ripped myself off. Odd, ehh? I know. But that is me. So, as of right now, I will slide back to three running days. One long run which will get progressively longer and two other outside runs that will be in the 50 minute range each. I will get in for some cross training (eliptical, I am thinking) one day a week and do some other core strengthening on other days including pushups and ab work. I will carefully monitor my body and my long runs just to make sure I am staying on track... Anyway, all else is alright. Thanks for the emails of well wishes and prayer for my family. We are working through our issues as best we can. Thanks to all of you for everything. Be well, y'all, Dan ------------------ http://therealgoindownsouth.blogspot.com

Hi everyone, it was a beautiful fall day here today. I think the high was 68 degrees, where was that weather Sun. Anyway, went for a lesurely bike ride this afternoon and a 2 mile walk. My legs are tired but not hurting. Here is my 1/2 marathon photo http://www.fotojack.com/photo/?race=988&val=67&sel=1&sid=63aaeec7fa8f58692bdb4d173c905209 Dan--I ran 3 days a week for all of my training for my 1/2. I'd like to say I crosstrained 2 days also but it was probably more like 1. I did 5 miles on Tues. and Thurs. and then a long run on Sat. Hope everyone is doing ok. Dan you can use google maps pedometer to map out a route and get a general idea of how far you are going. Also, check out websites for your local parks, sometimes they have their trails measured out already. Dan-I am a newbie runner, but I have been training for my 1/2 by running 3 days/wk. I did Xtraining in the first few weeks by swimming. However, since then I have only done the running twice during the week and then the long run on the weekends. I feel great and I am not as burnt out as I would feel if I was spending more time working out. My longest run to date (10 miles) felt great (a bit achy, but great). I guess I will let you know after my race on Sunday if the 3days/week worked or not. Peg-Did you go run?--just trying to hold you accountable.

Hey gang! I had to work late last night so I missed my last short run before Saturday. I'm off for a couple of days then have Jury Duty on Monday. I may get in a light workout at the gym today before Saturday. Or maybe I'll just continue to rest! LOLPeg312 - How'd the run go? And how's work looking today? Chuck43 - My Garmin seems to do just fine in the rain. It was more than just a light rain last Sunday and didn't have any problems. I too had thought about this but in reading posts from other peoples experiences, I decided not to worry about it. I also read as long as you don't push any buttons, you should be okay. Dan - Yep, know what you mean about wanting to know how far/how long the run was. Keep pluggin away! Sheila - Nice photo! And cool MB stats too! Hello to everyone else!!! Joe

Hey All, Tomorrow I am going to try to go for a run. Yesterday was the first day that I wasn't sore, and I was going to run this morning, but there was a little bit of a alarm clock malfunction.I am told that I will receive an email when they have uploaded the photos from the race. I'll keep you all posted. Dan - My theory is that an undertrained healthy runner will be an overtrained runner most days. I do think cross-training is important if you go with that plan, though. Francesca - What's feeling hard about getting out there? What passes through your brain when you look at your running shoes? It's okay to feel unmotivated and burnt out. Your half is five weeks away -- that is a while, think about whether you need to work in a cutback week, or a week when you run for fun instead of for training. Mental burnout will bite you, and you want to be totally there at the start line.

Hi guys -- just a quick post and run here. Spicegeek -- thanks for your insights re: the hip. Hope you get a good report from the doctor and get on the road to recovery soon. Peg -- a work imbalance can really mess with your life. Hope you can find something with better balance soon! Joe -- good luck with your 1/2 this weekend. Are you running it by yourself, or will you run with some others who are also particpating? Sheila -- great picture! When you look good you feel good, and when you feel good you run good.....or something like that Got in 45 minutes of elliptical and some weights yesterday. Hip felt good on the elliptical. I'm a pet sitter/dog walker, so have also been out walking doggies, although still with a bit of a limp. I'm going to skip the group run on Saturday, and try a short run instead. Then hope to get in some 4-6 mile runs next week, and get one more long run (maybe 10 or 11 miles) in before my half. I really wanted to do the 1/2 distance before that first 1/2, but at least that's "Plan B" for now. ------------------ Progress, not perfection.

Hey gang,Just a quick check in to say hi. Not much running this week due to time constraints and da*m sore feet. I'm thinking of goingto see my doctor then my orthotics guy but it still may be my shoes. Doesn't hurt when running but afterwards they are sore. Apparently my new shoes aren't good and I'm not really happy. I have to go out of town to buy shoes and I really don't have the time and the last 3 pairs I have bought have not turned out great even though I have bought them at "running stores" It's not looking good for the P.W.W.H.M. this Sat but thinking I will go anyway and have my husband bring the van so if the feet get worse I can jump in the van and go home. Good running to all I'm back to homework..... Corrina

Joe - the Faulkey Gully trail is very nice. It's about 1.9 miles going one way, but there are nice connections into the surrounding neighborhoods. It's wide enough to accommodate lots of traffic, which it gets plenty of. I usually hit it early enough in the morning that there aren't too many people on it yet. Otherwise I have to be on the lookout for cyclists and inline skaters.Peg - I know about the working too hard deal. I do corporate tax work and I'm constantly busy. We used to keep a list of projects to work on in the offseason, but it doesn't seem like there is an offseason anymore. yamahmama - 11 minute miles would be fast for me! Jeep - thanks for the response. I have a lot on my plate right now, so juggling my workouts is key. I'm so glad that it's cooled off enough for a decent outdoor run. I was out the door before 5 this morning and it was wonderful. My program called for a 30-minute run, but I stretched it to 40. Tomorrow I'll do some (light-weight) strength training and then do a 4-miler on Saturday. On Tuesday, I told my DH that I wanted a Garmin 305 for my birthday, so he went ahead and ordered it. It will be here next Tuesday. I can't wait to play with it. Marilyn

Howdy Peeps! - The day went on and I got lazy... didn't do a darn thing! lolImogene - Did ya fix that alarm clock? Cool, keep us posted on your race pics! Peg312 - We should have a cool crisp morning on Saturday huh? Carol40 - I'll be running it by my lonesome! I should have gotton off my butt today and on the eliptical! Sounds like a good plan for next week! And if you can do a 10-11 miler, you surely can do the 1/2 distance! Corrinabear - Good luck at the docs and the shoe store! Hope you make the PWWHM this weekend! Marilyn - That Faulkey Gully trail sounds nice! Must be nice running in the mornings! Except for weekend mornings, I usually run after work when the temps are near the highs! Very cool that you'll soon be getting a Garmin 305! Several of us have them and share our runs through MotionBased. Spicegeek - Hope you get some answers at the orthopedist! Sheila - That exercise room sounds cool! Joe

Shiela, nice race picture. Can I come over this winter and share your exercise room? Am already dreading the dreary, snowy winter days when there are no safe paths to run on and no daylight to run in.Tried to post last night but had a minor internet malfunction. Did a 4 miler on the treadmill at the gym. Was the first post race run that felt decent. Did a slow 3 miler outside today. Seems like it is taking me forever to get back after my last half marathon. I know that it has only been 11 days but that seems like a long time. I have increased my stretching time/routine. Hopefully that will also help. wbertha

Will leave tomorrow around noon and get back Sat. evening. Last week was the most weekly mileage to date, 25. My legs are recovering nicely!Good luck to the racers and long runners this weekend. Sounds like most everyone is still hanging in there! Welcome to the newcomers. Off to watch the Rockies and D-Backs. SM
