Hi Everyone...I'm still around, still running, but it's been taking a while to get settled into the new house and my pc still isn't set up and work's been busy as of late. Thought I'd check in though as I know a lot of you have had your halfs and there are a few coming up on the weekend (mine included . Congrats Sheila and Imogene on your times - those are both incredible times - you should both feel extremely proud of yourselves!! Wow! My training has been scattered the past few weeks but I've been able to increase my mileage each week - yesterday I did my longest run to date 17.8km (11miles). It took 2 hours and 18 minutes but it was also really hot and humid (with the humidex it felt like 29C (85F) and the sun was relentless. 20 minutes in I was ready to pull the plug. I don't know how I made it through, there were times when I had to slow down to a bare crawl cause I thought I was going to throw up. I was absolutely miserable, but the entire time I kept thinking that next weekend's race conditions can't be any worse. I'm not so concerned about the distance any more but I am worried about my sneakers - the last two long runs are taking their toll on my sneakers. I hope they make it through the half! I did want to ask you guys about runs this week - and what you suggest. How many times did you run/are going to run during the week leading up to the race, and what distance?

Sheila and Imogene, congratulations! Way to get it done in the heat and humidity, and I am glad you made it safely.Marilyn welcome, a number of us have now done the half or are very close, any questions you may have someone here can answer. Tawny, sounds like you are Canadian as you think in metric, I am too. Possibly you are preparing to run your half at the Toronto Marathon, like me. I am tapering this week, cut down my long run on Sunday to 12.3kms, short bike ride Monday, rest day today, 4-5kms slowly tomorrow. Simon.

Hi everyone! I hope you don't mind if I join you. I have decided that I would like to run a half marathon. I am a mom of 5 and just had my last baby in January. I ran cross country in high school and enjoyed it, but haven't run a whole lot since then. I started running a little bit this summer and I am LOVING it!! Right now I am running 7.5 mpw with a goal of running a half marathon in the beginning of June. So I have plenty of time to get in shape and train for it. After I do the half marathon, I would like to do a marathon.I hope it's OK if I start posting with you. I think posting on a weekly thread will help keep me motivated.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! It's nice to know that I have experienced people to ask questions of. Here in Houston, the running season is just getting underway and the big marathons and half marathons are stil a few months away. I've got 16 weeks to get ready for the one I'm doing - the 3M Austin Half on January 27. Today I did an easy 30-minute run on the indoor track at the Y. I would never have thought that I would be saying that 30 minutes of running was easy. Ha, ha!So, here's a couple of questions. Has anyone used Jeff Galloway's training programs? The overview for his beginner HM program talks about a run/walk ratio. Is this used for all of your runs or just for the long ones? Today I ran for the full 30 minutes, but wondered if I should go ahead and incorporate the run/walk philosophy. Also, all of JG's programs call for a day of rest the day before your long run. The way the program is laid out, this assumes that Saturday will be your day of rest and on Sunday you'll do your long run. This schedule doesn't work for me as I have church activities most of the day on Sunday, so that's usually my day to rest from exercise. I can't really do a long run on Mondays with my work schedule. So is it okay to have a light workout on Friday, do the long run on Saturday and then rest on Sunday? Thanks! Marilyn

Hello everyone!Just popping in to say hi to all the newcomers! This IS a great group...even if you aren't running a half this year... Hey, I just emailed the running store I bought my Mizuno's from this summer and asked about the knee issues (see my post in the Gear section) and they were great...willing to do an exchange and a test of some new Asics to see if it is the shoes...wow, isn't that great??? Maine Running Company...definitely a great place if you ever get up to Portland!

Marilyn - Hi! The R/W method is usually used just for the long runs. Congrats on going the full 30 minutes! You can just adjust your running days to better suit your needs. i.e. Run on M/Tu/Th rest on Fri then LSD (long run) on Saturday, and rest on Sunday! That of course is for 4 days per week. Where do you usually run at? I've run with Peg312 before at Memorial Park but she has been very busy at work lately. Add your Austin 1/2 to our calendar! See the link below... Ctmama1029 - Hey great news that the running store is willing to exchange the shoes for you! Hope they work well for you! Joe

goingdownsouth--LOL toe taps are just that. Tap your feet, I do it all day long while i'm at work, or driving down the road or anytime I think about it. Google toe taps for shin splints, you'll come up with all kinds of articles. Hopes this helps.sheila

Joe - OK, the race is added and I've even registered for it. I'm committed now or maybe I should be committed. I just paid $50 for the privilege of running 13.1 miles. LOL! I would love to join you at Memorial Park sometime. We live just south of Tomball off of 249, and I run mostly in the neighborhood and on the Faulkey Gully trail. There's a running club called Champions Fit that runs there on Saturday mornings, so I hang with them sometimes. They are mostly too fast for me, though. Marilyn

Check this out: http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_iliopsoa_sma.htm Joe- isn't it crazy how you can go out and do 10 easy and other days its a rough 2 miler? You just never know... Jen - way to go getting your day started early! I am working towards that also, but I am also a fan of the snooze button... Sheila - OMG about your mascara! LOL Gale - great job on your half! It definitely was a scorcher all around Tawny - My half is Oct 21, I am running 10 miles this Saturday (8 days before), then probably just a 3 or 4 on Monday and 2 on Wednesday then maybe some cross training on Friday. Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do! Simon - your half is right around the corner too eh? Sounds like a good taper week plan! Kkay - Welcome! And congrats on your most recent addition to the family! With 5 kids I this it is great that you find time to run! Marilyn - I have heard great things about the Austin 1/2 so that should be fun! To answer your question, I fully believe you should juggle your running schedule so it most easily fits into your life...that way you'll keep up with it too...! ctmama - That is great they are willing to exchange your shoes! Francesca - You will feel better once you get out there and run! ------------------ My User Profile If you're on MySpace send me a friend request!

Okay, just a short 4 mi on the DM this morning...tomorrow a.m. another DM run, but will be either intervals or hillwork - need to decide which one will make me happier ...spicegeek -- hope your injury is not too serious tommashe -- thank you for the recovery info. My HM comes in a few weeks & I've just been thinking (& reading some great advice on this forum) about the runs before, but not the runs after. So helpful info from you. Oh, and cool weather --- how about some high 30's in the Northern CA foothills where I live already --- bring on the thermals! Gale813 -- good finish --- brutal heat & humidity. Be sure to take it easy and get a good recovery in. That heat has to take a lot out of you. Francesca24 --- All I can say is Run, Francesca, Run! Tawny --- A 1/2 this weekend? Best of luck -- run well. KKay5 -- 5 Kids?! Sometimes I need to work my run schedule around my one & only DS. Best of luck on getting back into the swing and making time for yourself. Good running to all!

Marilyn-I use run/walk for every run over 3 miles.I didn't use to do them, but was plagued with injuries. Now I run 5/walk 1 for the first 1/2 of any mileage that I set out to run. If I am feeling good at the 1/2 mark, then I will run the rest of the way. It works for me. I won't win any races at this 11min. mile pace, but I am just out to run.Joe-I have tried to click on the race calendar link on your post a million times and it alway says unavailable. Is this just a problem with my computer? [This message has been edited by yamahamamma (edited Oct-10-2007).]

Five easy miles this morning done, and my training is all in the bank. HM is Saturday at 9:45AM in Baltimore. I *may* run a mile or two tomorrow morning just to keep me calm, but I think I'm just down to suitcase packing. Will report back next week!

5 miles for me, a brisk morning run - mid 40's. I can only hope for a perfect morning like this on race day!I also do run walk on all of my runs, but as I lose weight I hope to do more running than walking. For now it helps me get through the distances at a steady pace. Have a great day all! ------------------ My User Profile If you're on MySpace send me a friend request!

Hey everyone. Just have a minute. Well, I have a huge case going to trial on November 19th so I will be working a ton of hours and not on the computer much. I am really concerned with how this will affect my running. I haven't at all lately. It looks like I will need to switch to being a morning runner and I am not happy about that. For one, I probably won't be getting home until late at night so I will be pretty tired and I really don't like running in the dark for safety reasons. I will just have to see how it goes. The trial will most likely last three weeks. So when I get a chance I will log on and say hello. HAPPY RUNNING

Argh..I just typed up a big post and lost it. My day is not going very well - I was running late leaving the house and left my sneakers by the door - so much for my run on my lunch hour. Grrr!Anyhow, I've decided to run 3km today (when I get home from work) and probably another 3-4km tomorrow and then that's it until Sunday when I run the race. Simon - My metric preference gave me away - I am Canadian and the Toronto marathon is where I will be Sunday! Gale - Congrats on your run!! Marilyn - Welcome to the team . My advice in regards to a training schedule is to try and be flexible with your program. My training program recommended Sundays for my long run but I preferred Saturdays so I just moved everything by one day. When there were weeks where I knew a particular day wasn't going to work, I juggled the days to make the training work. I think it's really important to get your mileage but if you don't allow yourself some flexibility with the training, it can get frustrating. At least that's how it was for me. I was at the point where I was really resenting my runs until I start shifting things to make it easier. And Hi to everyone else! I'm getting butterflies just thinking about Sunday - I finally registered last night, no turning back now. I really hope my sneakers hold up - I keep joking that I'm going to carry a roll of duct tape with me just in case!!
