Sheila -- Awesome job!!! You sore today?I am so sore. So much more wiped that I was after any long run, which makes sense since a) faster than any long run I've done b) definitely the longest mileage I've done without stopping at all -- usually I hit at least one red light, even though I have mastered the art of drinking water from my bottle without stopping. Even if it does make me feel like a guinea pig. A couple of rest days are in my future, maybe a bike ride, and jog sometime later in the week. Joe -- I don't have another race on my plate right now. Definitely thinking about it, but also thinking about the fact that winter is coming and it might be a time to cut back and build base miles, strength and flexibility.

imogene--yes I am very sore, I can't figure it out. I have run faster on training runs with no stops and feel ok. But I feel like I have been run over by a truck. Do you think nerves plays a roll in it, or maybe the crowd, weaving in and out. Or maybe its just the different route. My friend and I are trying to figure it out. Gosh I bet you are so sore, you really ran fast.I'm just bored, being on vacation and to stiff to do much of anything. Guess I'll go watch some tv. Sheila. You'all ever notice when your on vacation all you want to do is eat. Not good since I'm not even going to be running for a few days and burning any calories.

WOW!!! you ladies rock...Shiela a 2:08 and imogene a 1:46. Fantastic races and race reports. How long does it take to recover from a half marathon? I am just starting week two (half marathon was a week ago Sunday) and have been out for a couple of short runs. Yesterday did a 4 miler that seemed to wipe me out for the entire day. Today, planned on another 4 miler but it was so bad that I cut it to 3 miles and still barely made it. Anyone know anything about the New Orleans half marathon in February? Or hear anything about the 26.6 with Donna in February? The second one is being held for the first time, I think. Hey, I may not be up to running very far yet but I definitely need a goal race in order to stay focused. wbertha

The one you asked about running with Donna is the Jacksonville Florida Marathon and Half Marathon, Feb 17th. It's for breast Cancer. It's on the Cool running home page.------------------ Chuck Go Gators

Chuck - yeah I like running in the morning better than at night just because it is out of the way then and I can just go about my day without figuring how when to eat or drink. It is dark now though and I just keep piling on more lights and reflective material! Now when my alarm goes off at 5:30am...then I am wishing I was a night runner! Marilyn - welcome to the board! You will love it here and will get so much encouragement for your half. Well, I just got word this morning that I passed the first of my 5 phase tests to get my CPA license. Now on to study for the next one! Easy 5K in the morning before work for me. Hope everyone has good runs this week! Alex

hey got my tires fixed on my bike as the bike shop was open and went for a nice country ride of 15.35 miles. It's peanut harvest time and cotton picking time so it was a very nice fun ride. Made it in under an hour 59.16. Welcome Marilyn. Congrats on your 5k. ------------------ Chuck Go Gators [This message has been edited by chuck43 (edited Oct-08-2007).]

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great day!I got in a great (albeit steamy) 4.2 tonight and it was a great run...I could have gone further but it was dark and I was running out of trail...LOL! Oh well...it was just great to have a great run with no pain... Now, I'm posting a question on the gear board if anyone wants to venture over there to provide input...

Hey gang... Quick fly by or now...51:40 run outside after work today. I felt relatively okay, by and large, but my HR was up - typical for after-work runs. Still, it felt good to be outside compared to on the TM. I don't know, I will try it this way for the week and see how it works out. I may decide to leave my runs the way were before - all mornings with TM work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and a long outside run Saturday. Anyway, we shall see. If anything, I feel somehat relaxed as the 01/05/07 HM creeps closer. Shins are icing and will get an intense self-inflicted massage thereafter. I am going to do this the best way I possibly can. As an aside, I am really proud of all of you for getting your runs in as best you can and reporting in here early and often. That is what makes this the best thread on the web... Be well, y'all. Sheila and Imogene- Wow!! What terrific times! I hope you recover from your efforts quickly. Great job! And thanks for the race reports. I love reading them, it's very helpful to learn what to expect.Marilyn- Welcome to the board! I just joined myself. Good job on the 5K! Dan- Sorry to hear about your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you and them. As for me- Sunday was a rest day. This morning, I did 5 miles- started out easy, but pushed the pace at the end for an average pace just under 12 minutes/mile. Meaghan

Hi team !Sorry I`ve been MIS for a while - I was travelling then busy in work and now I`m just sulking ! - After injuring myself before my 10K in my hometown I then went and made the problem worse running the 10K - things have not improved and i`m now in week 3 of no running and it is very painful to even hop on my right leg - I`m looking at some info on the web and i`m beginning to think I may have a stress fracture in my hip - which could put me off the road for up to 3 months ... ugh ... I`m waiting to see my doctor - in the meantime I`m not doing much at all for fear of making things worse Congrats ladies on you races - awesome job Dan - I know how you feel - my folks are one atlantic ocean away + my Dad had a pretty major heart attack last year + I lost my Aunt ealier this year - my only advice is visit as often as you can, call them on the phone and say everything you need to say to them when you can

Good morning, gang.... I feel surprisingly good this morning - knock on wood - after yesterday afternoon's run outside. I massaged my shins until the cows came home after icing them. I have a feeling that had a lot to do with it. Anyway I will see how the rest of this week goes before making a definitive decision one way or the other... Of course, me being the dork I am, I am not able to measure distance on this particular trail I run now... So I would be running for time hree days a week and running a specific distance on Saturday... I pray sticking with this will not derail my training... I want to make sure I can still make it happen for the HM in January... I will swing back through for personals later on... I still have to brush up on my Deutsch for class tonight... Heute, das Wetter ist sehr schoen, der Himmel ist blau und es bisschen windig und es ist bisschen heiss. Es regnet nicht heute. Well, at least I have the weather down pat...LOL Be well, y'all! Was able to only get 2 miles in this am- Have tried to go to the treadmill several times since I've been here but the hotel only has one and it is frequently taken- I had to wait this am- (at 5 am, who would of thought!) ran out of time, getting ready for the long day at my conference today. I asked about going outside- I was told not to that early in this part of town, so hopefully I will be able to get a longer one in at least once more before I get home Thurs night. Alex- congrats! Marilyn- welcome! spicegeek- sorry to hear of your injury- Good running to all! jules ------------------ The miracle is not that I finished, the miracle is that I had the courage to start. (unknown)

How 'Bout Them Cowboys!!!!!! Wooohoooo!!!! What an incredible ending and testament to never giving up.Spicegeek -- sorry you've been out of commission. Is the pain you are having where your hip meets your leg in front? Hard to lift your knee up in front of you? Just wondering as that's me right now, and I'm trying to figure out how to proceed with my 1/2 coming up in 4 weeks. ------------------ Progress, not perfection.

Morning! - Got my 2 miles in yesterday. Seemed kinda hard for some reason... Oh and the Cowboys really stunk up the place last night but somehow managed to come away with a win!Imogene - Sounds like a plan (to build base miles). Wbertha - How about the Houston HM in January? ;-) But seriously, just Google for their websites. MomAt40Pls - Welcome to the thread!! And congrats on finishing your first 5K on Saturday! Which was it? When is the Austin Half? Are you in Austin? I'm in Houston and so is Peg312. We both plan to run the Houston Half in Jan. Good luck on your training! Smiddleton - Think I'm going for the Red Sox, but don't know why exactly. It may be a subliminal from Steve Runner! LOL Alexbobalex - Congrats on passing that CPA exam! Chuck43 - Nice ride! Jeep725 - Hope your 4 miles went well. Nice plan for the rest of the week! Ctmama1029 - If you ran out of trail, that sounds like a good run! LOL Congrats on the pain free running!! Dan - Good run! Yep, next year will be here in no time! Um, that Deutsch sounds good to me! LOL Meaghanchan - Nice 5 miler! Yamahamamma - Sounds like you're pretty much ready for this weekend!! Carol - after I did the 10K lifting my leg/ knee was really painful - that improved after about a week but putting weight on my leg still hurts where the leg / hip meet - at the front mainly - what has not improved is that hopping or putting suden weight on my leg - like running - hurts .. quite a lot ....and it`s now over 2 weeks since I last ran - the pain does not go away of I warm up - it`s there all the time - and gets worse as the day goes onI had a similar problem where I would stiffen up after running - but once I had walked a little the pain would go away and I could not feel any pain while running - ice , advil after running and 3 weeks off running once I had ran the race I was training for - I biked swam and x-trained - cleared up the problem

wbertha--they say it takes 13 days to recover from a 1/2 if your under 40 and 21 days to recover if your over 40. I'm going to follow the same plan I did last time. That has me taking off until Sat. then just running 3 miles. It gradually adds milage back in till your back to where you started in about 3 to 4 weeks. I'm gonna take it slow, I don't have anything major planned for awhile. I'm gonna just coast thru till Jan. then I'm gonna pick up my milage again and get ready the the indy 500 1/2 on May 3rd. I'd like to still stay at about 20 miles per week till Jan. Marilyn--good for you, I'm sure you'll do fine on the Austin half, when is it?smiddleton-I agree, I'm so glad I wasn't doing the chicago. I bet them runners were so disappointed after training so hard. alex--congrats on passing your tests. hope your run went ok chuck--man I wish I was up to that milage on the bike. I'm still trying to get my butt used to the seat LOL. Jeep725--good luck on your runs this week, we have a cold front coming in also. I can't wait. I am so tired of the heat. ctmama--isn't it great when the run feels sooo good, I'll go check out the gear board. dan--I say hats off to any of you all that can do your runs on the treadmill, I just can't bring myself to do it. I run outside as much as I can. Take care of those shins. are you doing your toe taps. they work miracles. meaghan--looks like you had a good 5 mile run. Here's another story about my race I forgot to mention, well ok I was going to keep it to myself but what the hey. I put make-up on that morning because I wanted to look good for the finish photo. Well it was soooo hot and when I stopped at the finish line. I just started sweating something awful. I didn't know it but my mascara ran all the way down my face on both sides. So here I was waiting on my friend to finish and talking to everyone standing around. When my friend finished an hour later, the first thing she said was. Oh my god, you have black stuff all over your face. You should have seen it. I bet all those people were laughing their butts off. Oh well the moral of this story is, don't wear mascara in the heat. I hope it wasn't running for the finish photo. Its not going to look very good anyway, I don't even think I smiled when I crossed the finish line. I was just so glad I was finished. spicegeek--i'm so sorry to hear about your hip, I'll keep my fingers crossed that its not a stress fracture. Please let us know as soon as you go to the doc. jules--hope you get your run in. Joe--its wierd when the little runs feel hard isn't it. I dread my first run that I do, I'll probably end up walking part of it. My quads are so sore. Jen--oh what I'd do for 49 degree weather. I'm so jealous. Hope everyone else is doing ok. sheila

I ran my HM on Sunday here in Cleveland and I consider myself lucky. It was a full and half... the same day and time as Chicago in the same conditions. The only difference was we were running the towpath (a path that the mules used to tow the canal boats on the Erie canal) so it wasn't hot pavement and there were trees instead of bulidings. Even so, it was a brutally hot 13.1 miles, especially the last hour. When I got to the start line at 6:45 (it was still dark) it was already balmy. I knew that was a bad thing. As the sun started rising, so did the temps but not by a lot yet. The race went off at 8AM. By about 9:30 the sun was cresting over the trees and blazing down on us. I have been nursing an injured leg but it held up well. I took some Gu at mile 10 (I never use the stuff as I find it quite repulsive) but I was trying ANYTHING because of the heat. I had a solid PR going up til about mile 9 but I realized it may become a "just finish" race soon. BTW... that Gu saved my life!!! I thought it was all hype but I actully felt life come back into my body and I could actually feel myself running faster!!!! It got me through those last 3 miles!!! I wound up finishing in 2:19:27, only 3 minutes slower than my PR 4 weeks ago. I was VERY pround and quite frankly shocked!!! I was sooooo happy to be done. I waited for my friends. One finished about 45 seconds after I did. We waited for our other friend. She was injured as well and wound up walking most of it. She was the LAST halfer in at 3:30. The marathoners were passing the finish line (it was an odd course) at their 15 mile mark and they all looked pretty whipped. Heck, they still had 11.2 to go!!! I sure didn't envy them. I watched for a friend of mine who was doing the full but missed him. He called me later and told me about how he caught a guy as he was collapsing!!!! Luckily they were by an unmanned water stop and he stayed and poured water on the guy til someone got help. He was worried that he might go into convulsions. He had about 3.2 miles to go (that was were I had gotten my Gu). He said people were dropping like flies at that point. We were ALL very fortunate!!!!!!!! ------------------ Running sober, one step at a time!!!My Profile
