hi all-- Went to Raleigh for the state fair and spent the night, it was a blast. I love tractor pulls, roasted corn, and rides! We had the best time.Linda: yeah, Mr.4eyes is running and his sister lives there and she will want to run with us also. It will be a great time. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in person from here, too! Great job on your run, you put in some heavy duty time. Shell: Laughing is the best even if it's maniacal at times! Running keeps my laugh in place, I really think it's a natural prozac. Tom: Haven't gotten those shoes yet, but I'll be on the look-out for them. Podiatrist guy says its inflammation (age related--@#%&***!) because of bad foot design, something about cavernous feet, high arches or some such nonsense. Anyway, as I get older it will only get worse without these shots. No fun, the shots hurt alot, really alot. I got us registered for the race, I'm excited! Have a great week everyone! Heidi

Shell - I know the feeling! hang in there... I'm sure I'll get back to craziness at some point., but sometimes you just need a break. In my case, I took a work break. Ok guys, I rested for 2 days because my poor muscles were sore from the 2 days of almost 4 miles. Today I felt much better, did some volunteer work in my DD's class this morning & then went for a run/walk. Total 4.34 miles in 1 hour 4 minutes, 17 W/11 R/3W/10R/3W/2R/2W/2R/2W/5R/3W/2R/2W Interesting thing happened today, I was done with the 3 loops plus a little & it was only 50 minutes, my brain told me it was ok to stop... but my gut wanted to run at a faster clip just for fun (had some left & so I decided to go for it)... looked at my Forerunner & actually got down to about 9 1/2 minute pace was I was in my stride... ahh it felt so good. so I put in 4 loops today. Oh & did I mention, I ran the whole time in the rain? wow! that was the first time & it was quite exhilirating!! Linda

Tom: I'll find out about that hotel, I don't want to stay with my sister in law as she has 4 little ones...Noise pollution in that house I tell ya. The race is at 7:30 A.M. EST so for you it's 6:30 and if it's really time change that makes it 5:30 for you...Ouch. It'll be FUN though! Heidi

Wow that is a lot of stuff! Shell - its going to be tons of fun! Just remember, you're doing this for the fun of it & you'll have a great time. Trying not to go out slow, is great advice - with the excitement & all, its important to pay attention to this. Tom - oh prepared one, so what do you wear running in the winter months? Its cold out there today! Between the rain, and the cold, I'm thinking I may need to buy some new stuff to wear, ahhh excuses, excuses... yesterday, I went out in normal attire, plus a sweatshirt...it was soaking wet by the time I got back... I was going to go out again today, but my back is sore... seems to happen when I increase mileage. Thinking today is better off as a rest day. Then tomorrow, hit it again. went out today & I could see my breath... same attire as Monday & I was fine. Total of 4.30 miles One hour 5 minutes.. thinking about that Maff training the Boomers have been talking about, did the HR on my Forerunner today & it seems to correspond to run easy, enjoy your runs type effort. Maybe it would be a way to keep me from overdoing... but then again I need some of the fun part too Linda

Okay forget the Maff.. Did 5.05 miles today, .71 warmup walking, 2 miles running & crashed & burned trying to pay attention to the HR, 2.34 walk back home uphill. So I'm back to going by feel, I'm sure I did more running doing that, faster pace, just some walking in there because of hills...Found out today they do a 5K 4th of July run, right up the hill on the hills I've been doing. OY! just think, if I keep this up, I'll be able to do it. Linda

Shell - YAY!! Great run! Woke up with low peakflows, massive headache, usually I rest on days like this. But just felt like doing something. So, I did a 2.21 recovery walk today.

Linda...what is your condition again??? My MIL just had part of her lung taken out, so she's trying to get back into the flow of things so to speak and she found walking 5 minutes at a 45mm pace made her dizzy, so I was telling her how you've been making a really good comeback and that she could do it too eventually! But I couldn't remember what your lung problems were.

Hi Shell - I have exercised induced asthma with bronchiospasms, which has not been controlled yet, was diagnosed August 05.. they call it mild but persistent... lol well it'll be kinda controlled & then I kept getting triggered every couple of months.. no triggering in Oregon at all! but have overdone with the running sometimes - with give me setbacks...The peakflows are a way for the doctors to measure breathing on asthmatics or anyone with respiratory issues... I have this little tool that I blow into & it tells me what it is. I was told that my range was 250-400 when I first starting using it, under 250 being the red zone or go to the ER! above 400 being the ok zone or green, between 250-400, I need to take some medicine to get above 400. When I first started going to the doctors, I was living at 250, not functioning at all - couldn't vacuum, walk the parking lot at work, walk around the house without many asthma attacks.. so not really living... when I started seeing the pulmonologist, he told me right away to start walking, eventually up to running (under his care) & it went immediately up to 350. I'm on Singulair, Qvar & Foradil... the Foradil is the only one that brings the peakflows up to normal level, also the more I'm able to run, the higher the peakflows get... Right now I'm operating between 400-450 most days.. But when I get headaches, I know its lower, usually between 300-400.. time to take medicine. For some unknown reason, I have more trouble walking fast than running, has to do with bronchials opening up when running... so the pulmonologist says. But I HAVE to warmup up the bronchials before, I run or walk fast.. I start out barely walking & gradually increase as the bronchials warm up, if I don't my breath is taken away, get headaches..eventually would have attacks, dizziness, pass out... As for your MIL, dizziness is not good. I wouldn't have her walk unless her pulmonologist (she is seeing one, right) okays it & is under her care.. 45mm would be really slow, right? Can she walk around the house? anywhere? I started super slow & worked up, but it was under a doctors care... he told me to call him anytime if I had problems. It was really scary, but paid off in the end... but she needs to go off how she feels - very important, headaches, dizziness, tiredness would be the bad signs... so thats why I'm saying talk to the doctor.. mine helped me do this by using medicine, ie. albuterol first (now Foradil) before I even started & after, during as I needed it. I realize her situation is different, but still there has to be a way to help her get better. Linda [This message has been edited by Rindaroo (edited Oct-21-2006).]

Linda...MIL wants to know if you are on anything preventative.

Doc was trying to get me down to just the Singulair... but Qvar is preventative (a steroid), it prevents bronchiospasms & helps to open the bronchials.. but Foradil is the one that is normally used as a controller, i.e. preventative.. its in the same class as Advair & Serevent. I tried both of those, but they didn't work. Foradil is the only one that keeps my peakflows up. But I use Foradil as my rescue also (which the pharmacist said isn't the normal use of it).. it is long acting - 12 hours, & the albuterol didn't work for me. After exercise, I would get massive asthma attacks like 2 or 3 hours later, but on the Foradil I don't have that happen. Its a newer drug & being used for a lot of runners, from what I hear. anyway the Qvar & the Foradil are the preventative ones.hope this helps. btw - I know its seems simple they way I go at it, but it took me a long time to figure out my system. I listen to my body, pay attention to my breathing while I walk, run etc... it takes awhile to train yourself to do that.. but I know the signs now, so even if I'm walking around the house & I feel it, I know to slow down my walking... I only learned this through lots interaction with my doctor... definitely a learning process.
