Afternoon all! Just got done doing 2.46 on the treadmill...Not too bad. You don't know how bad I wanted to go to 2.5 but I controlled myself. Leg doesn't hurt. Feels awkward, but not painfully. I'm using a huge frozen brisket as my ice pack right now. Whatever works right. I'm getting some weird looks at work HAHAHA. How's everyone else doing????

Hi guys--
Rough week this week, got stung by a bee when I went out to my favorite loop, I felt something fall into my hair, reached up to pull it out and it was a hornet. I don't know who was madder, but I won--he died. Stopped by the general store where my daughter works to drop off her lunch and she poured "Wounded Warrior" on it and wow, that stuff was amazing--pain gone that fast. 15 minutes later (halfway around my loop) and my finger started to look eerily like a bratwurst with a heartbeat. eww. Had to move my wedding rings to another finger and put the speed on to get home--tears flowing, it was ugly. Anyway, all is well now, but that was not my favorite run...

Got on the tready this morning & walked 40 minutes again, this time gradually up to 3.4 & woohoo actually made it 2.02 miles. Its much cooler today, I have to wonder if that's part of the reason. Either that or just the fact that I walked yesterday helped.

Heidi - owie!!! I was just thinking yesterday that we hadn't heard from you in awhile & here you are today. How's everything going??

Good luck on that trail run, Shell!

As for me, I didn't listen to my body or my mind today, I listened to my intuition... interesting concept.. Here is the conversation I had with myself, lol...My body screamed at me to stop ( I was coughing, having trouble getting enough air at 2.4 walking) My mind said, I know you can run, just do it! My intuition said, something about this just isn't right. Yesterday you walked at 3.4, how could it be so different today? Mind you need to figure this out.... So my mind said... hmmmm you've been walking around kinda fast sweeping, getting kids ready for school & then you don't feel too great, then you get on the treadmill... let's remember something, you do better running than walking, because it opens up your airways, walking fast closes them... what we need is for those airways to open up.. okay body, you need to grow some balls... we will do this logically, warmup the bronchials for 15 minutes & then run at 4.0 to open those bronchials up.. if bronchials scream, then will go back to the body's idea... but this worth a try...

Walked 15 minutes up to 3.2 (using deep breaths the whole way), ran 10 minutes at 4.0, walked 5 min at 3.3, ran 5 minutes at 4.0 , then cooldown 5 minutes, 40 minutes & 2.17 miles total. yay! I feel stronger mentally & physically right now, let's just hope I didn't push the bronchials too
much.

Tom - does this sound crazy or what? I just think its a vicious circle, breathing while walking around, running on the treadmill.. the more I run, the more my breathing is okay walking around doing normal stuff. So today, thought maybe I'd try at break the cycle I was in.

Linda

Tom...i've been trying that with walking taking small dainty steps, but it seems kind of hard doing that with running, but i'll try it next time. Got in a crappy 1.3 miles, BUT I made 5 for the week, so that's ok. I'll go with that. I just cannot seem to get my shin to loosen up

Hi all!
Shell, loved the bouncy happy faces, cracked me up--Sorry about your trail run cancellation. Can you run next to the sidewalk?

Linda, your perseverence is inspiring, you don't let anything get in your way. Keep it up!

Tom: How are things your way? Have you been getting in some beautiful runs lately with the weather so perfect?

I was out Wednesday and the maples are just beginning to change on top, so I was going along looking at the tops of the trees, really enjoying myself, listening to my favorite music and completely alone. There were cars, but you know it felt like I was all alone, just in that perfect place, right?
Last night we went out to dinner and a concert and a bunch of our friends kept coming up to me and telling me about seeing me running along with my nose in the air and how I wouldn't wave at any of them... life in a small town...
Have a great week-end you all!

Shell - Sorry about no trailrun. Maybe walking longer to warmup the shins before you run? I have to walk at least 15 minutes to warm up the bronchials before I can run, just a thought.

Heidi - thanks. Sounds like a wonderful time LOL at the neighbors... before I left Socal, a friend asked me if I was still running, she hadn't seen me run by in awhile.. geez I never knew she saw me run by.

Rest day today. Exercised 3 days in a row & calves are a little tight. I don't want to mess up my feet, so I think I'll do some yoga later, if I can find that DVD... the breathing seems just fine today it rained yesterday, it looks amazing outside today.

Tom...used to be the only time I ever got shin splints was when I walked fast...I never used to get them running...oh well, there's a first for everything. Since I was on the track, I have to attribute it to "TOO FAST". I could not keep myself under 12mm. And I was trying to go slow. That's where a treadmill comes in.

Heidi...sounds beautiful where you are...Hubby was right though about running in the woods alone...I may be supergirl, but I'm not indistructable. RRRRRRRRRR

Linda...I may give that a try...I HATE WALKING! RRRRRRRR I'm glad to know your breathing is still doing great. I was excited for you yesterday.

I found a running program for people recovering from major injuries...today was 10 min walk 5 run 5 walk 5 run. I forgot the last 5 running, but it was ok. 20 minutes was good and then I went and soaked in a nice espom salt bath. Doing some research on proper running technique as I noticed in my shadow that it looks like I'm throwing my legs out. Someone told me an eliptical is good for teaching you good form as it keeps your legs in the right position...any thoughts???

Nice job on the run walk program, Shell-- I don't have any info on the elliptical, except that I like it. Tom or Rin may have some idea about the form issue.

I did 4 miles today at a beautiful lake, spooked a horse or two and had a great time. Now I'm headed out to do a litter sweep!
Have a great football Sunday!

shell - the 20 minutes run/walk sounds like a good idea. My podiatrist had me doing 20 minutes, slowly progressing from walk to run based on my improvement. have no idea on the elliptical, but kinda makes sense.

Got on the treadmill again today, some definite progress!! hmmm maybe the difference is I didn't make the hike on my uphill driveway to the kids bus stop before treadmilling... anyway here is what I did:

warmup - walked 15 minutes gradually up to 3.2
ran 7 minutes at 4.0, walked 3 minutes at 3.3, ran 5 minutes at 4.0, walked 5 minutes at 3.3, ran 5 minutes at 3.8, 5 minute cooldown. total 45 minutes & 2.51 miles.

Thinking I will go back to the slow, faster, slower strategy that worked so well for me when I first started running... Today was still pushing a little, but just a little, not like Friday. No ambulance rides for me Just really felt like I needed a push to get me over the hump I was stuck in.

HEIDI//..........nice running.........myself, am still recovering from last year's Back problem ...(remember ''Don't Mow Drunk''??)........got my long run at about an hour, gonna add extra days based on TheBack's opinion of them.......
.........hopefully will be running more in Knoxville area.....maybe we can do a run this Spring......(even tho EST kills me)........
SHELL//////........that sounds really good........as to the over-striding, see if you can feel your foot-strike right underneath your hips.......that is the shorter stride......and you might want to try adding hand-weights to your walks, you can really feel 'em on the second half of the walk.......
,,,,,,,,,oh,,,,,,,ps,,,,,(hey, I'm old, I forget stuff)....
............................the elliptical is a good work-out,,,,I don't think it helps my running, but it does wonders for strenghtening the muscle groups that help my running.....worth a shot.......
RIN//......I think you're setteling into a good routine, don't hurt yourself, but that extra push DID seem to help........just go easy, and don't be afraid to back off if you need to.....
............ok guys.........nice scenic run (with stampeding horses), a little re-hab planning, and a great run/walk combination.....(don't for get your 9/1 when you get to it)......very nice efforts.......
...........enjoy the work-outs.........if you aren't, CHANGE SOMETHING...........

Alrighty, went to the gym yesterday and ran. Wahoo. Second time in two weeks. I feel great. Anyway, I finally feel better from the miscarraige so I warmed up on the elliptical for 5 minutes, then walked for 5 minutes and then interval again. That's how I started running last year, was to warm up and then run/walk until I was running more and more. It felt so good. I didn't even complain about the sweat.

If you thought that my life couldn't get crazier, my Grandpa (maternal) was in a car accident last week and has been in the hospital ever since. He already has problems, asthma, hip replacement, blood thinners, sore body. So now he has compression fractures, one in his neck and two in his lower back. Tons of bruises, several lacerations that needed stitches, chest hurts from the airbag. Anyway, I just had to let you know that you should NEVER think, "Gosh, could it get any worse??" Because the Lord will say, oh you think you've got it bad? I'll show you bad. Anyway, I'm going to bed, but I had to tell you about my run yesterday. I was so happy. Yippee!

Morning All...will be doing the elliptical today...thinking I really need to work on my form. Also found a website that gives drills (marching, skipping, etc) that will help with proper form. check it out and tell me what you think. http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/tecdrill.htm I'm gonna try those prior to my run on Wed. (I'm gonna rest tomorrow as I'll be walking all over the campus and that's a workout in itself. )

HWI...great job on your run...sorry about your grandfather...hope he gets better soon!
