Patty - great job on the running, but please be careful not to push it too much, ok? I'm not sure its a good thing to have the breathing ragged, but you are a lot healthier than I am with the asthma....

I'm doing fine, its been smoky here the last few days due to people burning fields, leaves etc. Tried to go out yesterday, it was a bad idea.. only made it 1.81 miles mostly walking.. tried to run after 3 minutes, diaphragm starting hurting badly so I quit. very responsible of me, lol... guess I should've used the treadmill.. thinking about trying again tonight on the TM, we'll see.

Had a doctor appt with pulmonologist today & he was pleased I am better & ok'd the running, so he decreased my steroids from 3 puffs 2x a day to 2 puffs 2x a day.. & I go back in a month.

Tom - I told the doc what the pharmacist asked me about the Asmanex & why I'm taking so much.. he said I know, they called us. lol, but nice to know they are being responsible.

okay I'm back, just got off the treadmill. I did 54 minutes, 2.90 miles. 15 min w/u, run/walk : 15R/4W/11R/4W then 5 minute cooldown... yay! looks like the smoky attempt didn't affect me too bad.

Got a test today in school...wish me luck...I need to pass this test...(did bad on the last one)

Hello all,
Linda woohoo. To me the big news is the doctor lowering the dose. Your running is going well and you're being smart about it. That smoke is terrible. In my area it is illegal to burn leaves like that due to the health problems and the risk of things getting out of control. Keep up the good work.

Shell your a racing maniac. Good luck this weekend. I know it's hard but you need to have an easy day or at least moderate day after a hard day. That's why I run every other day.

Well last night I was a maniac. I did weights, the xtrainer and the bike for about 1 1/2 hours. Then ate an apple, showered and swam 40 laps. The first few laps I was already tired, but I got into a groove and managed the rest. I was pretty hungry when I finished. I woke up late this am and will do my run after work. No hill work though I am sure that would be pushing my luck.

Have a good day all.
Patty

Shell how do you do that?

Ran last night & either during the run or afterward with my stretching I pulled another muscle this time in the left leg. I am so depressed. I'm just going to concentrate on xtraining, the bike & swimming. No running for 1 week and I'll ease back into it. I'm icing it and taking Advil. Swimming tonight and xtraining tomorrow. I also have a St. Pat's parade to march in.

Shell - good luck tomorrow!!!

IP - I agree, stop that! such a bummer... maybe you're overstretching? sounds like a good plan to wait a week.

Did the treadmill today - for 56 minutes, run/walk was 20R/3W/5R/3W, rest warmup/cooldown walking... really want to run outside! hoping for warmer temps & no burning this weekend!

Hello all,
I agree. I need to stop doing that!! I was thinking about it later. I was so tired and didn't feel like running, but I also didn't want to have only 2 runs during the week. If I was that tired in my mind, I have to think how tired my body was and probably needed a rest. Should have rested.

Shell how did you do? Inquiring minds want to know. Oh and how did your test go?

Linda your doing well. Nice & steady. How was the weekend? Was there any smoke?

Have a good day all.

Shell - how was the 10K?

Patty - sometimes we just need to listen to our bodies, minds... so hard I know...

Saturday - I cleaned the whole house & that was a huge milestone! didn't exercise even though I had planned on it.. after I was done with the house, the bronchials were a little rough, so decided to rest them.. had to do the house, my mom is going for a visit on Thursday..

Sunday - went out for a run/walk - 1 hr 3 minutes, 3.78 miles, 21 min warmup, run/walk: 19 min run/23 min walk.. walked fast on some of the uphill that I usually try to get 2 minutes running in, just thought that would help me not push too much & it was cool I saw a 16 minute fast walking up that hill Actually seeing some 8:xx as fastest pace (well for a point in time) while I'm running, that is encouraging... maybe I need to think about finding a flatter place to run to see if I can run longer.

Hello all,
Great job Linda!! I hope this trend continues. Your doing great and this with a lowered dosage. How is your mom's visit? Oh and nice job on cleaning the entire house. I am so far behind on that.

This past weekend I was in a St. Patrick's day parade on Sat. On Sunday I tried to be in the Philly one. Unfortunately I forgot to set my clock ahead and got there after both of my groups had already past. I also couldn't use my phone to hook up with friends, as it was dead. I hadn't charged it in a while. DH has now given me a new expression "even though I'm Irish I will try to get my sh-- together". I am in desperate need of that.

Last night I went to the gym and did 15 min. on the bike and 40 min. of yoga. This am I did weights and 10 min. of xtraining. Tonight I will swim and that should go okay. My left leg hasn't bothered me since Friday. I'm still trying to keep myself from going crazy.

Have a good one.
Patty

Today I did something really stupid, was so antzy to go outside & run that I tried...yes it was smoky, well I made the 20 minute warmup mile, but could feel it in my lower chest, so decided not to run tried to treadmill after & still wasn't happening.. so rested the rest of the night...

Mom comes tomorrow & will be here for about a week.. did touchup cleaning on the house today (due to messy kids, lol) & hey at least I won't be embarrassed about the shape my house is in this time.

Patty - hang in there!! Great that the leg is doing ok, but I'm sure that week off will really help it. Swimming is suppose to be really good exercise when you have an injury, right?

Hey all! 10k was good. Wasn't one of the best feeling runs I've ever had, BUT I knocked almost 2 minutes off my time! SO YEAH! Learned a big lesson at that race...NO BEER AFTER THE RACE! I felt like caca the whole rest of the day until I started drinking some more water

Don't know about my test just yet...will hopefully find out when I go back on Tuesday. (I've been on spring break) I have a stats test on Tuesday as well so I've been studying this spring break DD2 also go chicken pox right before spring break.

Monday I did 3 miles in the mud...it was hard, but fun. Tuesday, after observing that I usually struggle to get going during a 3 mile run but feel like I can run forever afterwards, decided to bump my run up to 4 miles. Well I did 4.25 with negative splits. No speed racer time...but it was nice to know that I could go that distance without a break. soooooooooo today I've decided to try a mile warm up run, then stretch, before I do my 3.

Linda...what's the deal with all the smoke???

Patty...I wish they would have a st. patrick's day run here! I found Bailey's Ice Cream yesterday! Gonna pick up the corned beef and cabbage tonight! Hope you're getting better!

HEY TOM! How are ya???

Hello all,
Linda smoky = bad for the lungs. Seriously I hope it isn't worse than just a temporary blip. Enjoy your mom's visit.

Shell when it rains it pours. Studying and a sick child. At least the whole family isn't sick. Congrats on the PR for the 10k. Great job on the longer run. Enjoy the rest of the week. Oh and is Bailey Ice cream made with Bailey the liquor? I'm not doing a St. Pat's run, but am thinking of doing one next year in Virginia.

Well I ran today and the leg seems to be doing all right. I walked .4 mile then ran 1.4 mile and finished with .2 mile walk. No pain in left leg during the run, but the older btt muscle did groan a bit. Right now the left leg is feeling the run. Not a pain, just a reminder that I need to take it easy still. Last night I swam 1 mile. I hope to average between 1 & 2 miles every time I swim. I just might get all the patches by the end of the year.

Have a good day all.
Patty

Sometimes, maybe once or twice in a lifetime, you do something that you never even dreamed you were capable of doing. You never even fathomed the thought, because it just seemed that off the wall to conceive. Then the idea pops in your head and the next thing you know you’re doing it and then you’ve done it. What just happened? Was this all a dream??

A year ago, I started running…and all I want to do was 5k! That’s it. That was what was in my mind as THE ULTIMATE ACCOMPLISHMENT! And I did that. So then the next logical step in my mind was 5 miles. God I wanted 5 miles bad! I was ravenous for it. I HAD to do 5 miles…and I did…but I paid the price for my insatiable need to have 5 with an injury that kept me from running for almost 3 months. There was lots of time to reflect. And still in the back of my mind, 5 miles was where I wanted to go. I just wanted 5. Didn’t want anything more. 5 was where I would stop and be happy…

Eventually 5 miles came and went and I was doing 10k’s. But what had once been very certain barriers, I’m gonna go to this mileage and that’s the max I’m going to do, started to become goals to get past. Also, somewhere in there I got suckered into registering for a half marathon in Vermont. Could I do it?? I knew I could. After all, I was achieving every goal I put in front of me. Now would I do it pretty or fast…I didn’t know…but I KNEW I COULD DO IT!

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. I was scheduled for my first ever 10 mile run! I was entering the land of double digits. If I could do this…3.1 more miles would be nothing. I carb loaded the day before. I drank my Gatorade. I went to bed at a decent hour. When I woke up, everything was moving smoothly. It felt like it was going to be a good run. As I drove on to the park, the world around me still asleep in the darkness before dawn, I had no doubts that this run would be great.

I started my run just as dawn was appearing. I had my headphones playing Irish music. I had my St. Patrick’s Day shirt, every thing felt good. My body felt good, my breathing felt good, my mind felt good. There were rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks all around. The creek was swollen and rushing from the deluge of rain a couple days back. Every thing was peaceful and I imagined I was in Ireland running down some country road.

Around mile 6 I stopped and stretched, and I knew in my heart that as long as I felt this good, I wasn’t going to stop at 10, I was going on to 13, but I would only make that decision at 10. I hit some hills and thought of Ty as I screamed “I EAT HILLS FOR MEALS!” Around mile 8 I thought of Tammy who I was virtually running with me and I yelled hello to her. I thought about my upcoming half marathon in Vermont. Thought about what I would wear, what I would eat. I thought of the great time we were going to have especially because I knew I could do it.

At mile 10 I had come full circle. So I stopped and stretched, went to the bathroom, and decided that yes indeed I was going for 3.1 more miles! I was going to do a HALF MARATHON!

Those last 3.1 miles were a little slower. My legs and feet were tired. I even took a walk break at mile 12. Then I was at 13! Only 1/10 of a mile to go! I kicked it! And I did it! AND I STARTED CRYING! I’m sure the people passing me were wondering if I was ok! YES! I was ok! I had just done 13.1 miles. I had done a Half Marathon! I had done something at a year ago wasn’t even in my mind to do. I called John and he was so proud of me that he told the girls and they called me to tell me “good job”. I’m crying right now thinking that my kids called me to tell me “good job”. I’m crying right now because of the many things I’ve learned from running is that I AM SUPERGIRL! I CAN DO ANYTHING and I hope my girls see that and take that lesson to heart in whatever they do because running has been so much more to me than just getting from point A to point B by moving faster than walking. It’s been the physical manifestation of all the hard work and effort I put into so many things I do. If I can run a half marathon, there isn’t anything I can’t do.

Shell - WOW! You are my hero!! Awesome 13.1 miler

Tom - how's your knee??

Patty - how are you doing today??

Well I haven't run in 3 days, yes my mom has been here for 3 days.. that just sure messes with the running schedule. This morning I'm going to get on the tready though, there are fires burning across town on the hills...experience tells me outside is a no-go..

Looks like I'm starting my new job next Friday. I picked up paperwork & did the drug test on Friday. So looks like I'm going to need some creativity with my new schedule.. so we shall see what happens.

Shell - the burning, locals burn leaves, trash, fields & the forestry service (since we are in the foothill, right below a big mountain), burns excess brush to prevent forest fires.. guess this is what Spring is like here...such a bummer!! The neighbors say that you can call this burning phoneline & ask if you're allowed to on any day... it depends on the quality of the air. so, if its a nice day, they'll probably be burning.. oy!!

will be back later to report my run.

Thanks Tom!! & you were so right! I did an hour on the treadmill this morning, 20 min warmup walk, 25 min run at 3.6/ 5 min run at 3.8/5 min run at 3.6... breathing felt fine throughout!! so that's why I tried the 3.8 to see if it was ok, so am thinking about doing a 10 min 3.6/ 10 min 3.8/ 10 min 3.6 next time... & go from there on increasing on the treadmill... I even did that with NO music since my mom was reading in that room. plus don't think she's appreciate rock n' roll cranked up either

The smoke .. I know .. can you believe this?? It doesn't even bother most people, so hoping I can get the brochials healed & eventually it won't be a problem..Tammy on the boomer board told me that it stops in June when it starts getting too hot & a fire danger... you'd think with all that smog in Socal this wouldn't bother me.... all i can say is OY!
