Hi Friends, remember me? I haven't been checking in here, barely making it to the CH. My entire family was sick for a long time (did I post that??) and then when I started to feel better my Grandpa took a turn for the worse.

He stopped eating on the 9th and several days later when the home health nurse was there he woke up and asked her how long this was going to take. Sad. He passed away on the 17th. I miss him so much, but I know that he is pain free and he's with my Grandma again. They were so in love! They had the best, most romantic relationship ever and such a great example for us. We knew that his health was declining and he was asking for us to pray for him to go. It was just a matter of time. He suffered so much in the end. It was really hard to watch him go through it.

I had a great visit with him on the 14th. He was in a lot of pain that day and he had his eyes closed a lot. I was in there with him and it was just me. I was holding his hand. My Grandma was a great singer and one of my best memories of her is how she always hummed and there was music around. I'm sure he's missed that. I just had a feeling to start to sing so I did. He squeezed my hand a few times and raised up his eyebrows. He knew that I was there and I knew that he knew. It was great. I sang him several songs and then had to take the kids home.

I haven't been motivated to do anything. How do you get back on track? For me, this is like if my Dad died. My family isn't close, but I was close with both Grandparents. I am eating like crap, feel like crap, and I don't want to do anything. I need some serious help. I am happy to know that he's happy and hopefully playing 18 holes of golf.

Htk...I am sorry for your loss. He sounds like a wonderful man. I can't tell you how much the description of you singing for him touched me. That was a beautiful thing to do. Just the right thing. You are grieving, and the things that you are going through are all a part of the process. Just don't lose yourself too far. It sounds to me like you have a good grasp of things. You are subconsciously keeping tabs on your moods and behaviors, and as long as you continue to do that it will serve you well.

Hi Hawaii - nice to hear from you. lots of {{hugs}} for you. sounds like you could use them. My grandpa went the same way, it was very difficult (last year in May). He has such a huge impact in my life, I am reminded of him often. hang in there, you will get motivated again.

Well I went out for a walk today, I knew it would be slow, but wow I didn't know it was humanly possible to walk this slow. well I walked one loop - .88 of a mile in 27:53 minutes. Well I am feeling a little better tonight, so will walk again tomorrow & see how it goes.

Hello all,

Hwi I'm sorry for your loss. It just takes time. You have your dh & kids and they will help you through this.

Wass congrats on the baby. Running will give you a bit of a stress reliever when your life feels out of control. With babies that is a sure thing.

Linda your doing fine. Keep up the effort and just enjoy the walk. It doesn't have to be fast.

Shell you are a speed demon. Don't overdo it and injure yourself. I'm talking from experience here.

Hi Tom. How are you doing? I seem to recall a fall a while back. Are you fully recovered?

I've been keeping up the rehab. Still doing a run/walk. It's mostly run now. I continue to get twinges every now & then. I still haven't joined a yoga class, but I do intend to. My speed has improved marginally. I hope to do some speed work in March. Other than the btt muscle I'm feeling strong. I'm not planning on any races and I'm not sure I will. This year is just going to be a build up year.

Have a good one everyone.

Patty

Hey Tom!

I'm doing pretty well. I just ran my first 50k on Saturday. A very long report is posted over in the MS forum if you are interested. If not, can't blame you there. Short version: I did it, I completed it pretty much according to plan, and I'll do another one for sure...just not in the winter.

Good running, walking, spinning, swimming...whatever gets you off the couch and moving everyone!

CC make that 2 who are in awe of those that can do those distances. The training alone is a huge commitment. I'll go and read your rr.

Just wanted to fill you guys in who are dieting. I'm doing a weight loss program through my gym. It's called healthy inspirations and includes a nutritionist and trainer. I initially lost 3.5 lbs and I'm still there one week later. I must confess to cheating. The trainer is having me do things a bit different, which I wasn't sure about to begin with. Now though I feel a bit stronger so maybe she does know what she's doing.

Have a good day everyone.

yesterday I didn't feel up to running, did some errands & that was all I had. Today, I took the kids to school, rested for a bit then went out for a walk.. another .88 of a mile, that took me 25:16, used candle breathing at the beginning & towards the end of the loop... that helped me walk a little faster than the other day.. well I felt a little better anyway, so guess I'm beginning my road to recovery once again.

I received the PowerBreathe in the mail, you basically do the same thing as the candlebreathing, but it has resistance you can adjust it too.. I'm thinking this should help, since the candlebreathing always helps me. will let you know.

Patty - good for you on the 3.5 pounds! hope things go well with the new trainer.

walked 1.31 miles today, 33:45 At the first loop point (.88), I was 3 minutes faster than yesterday & felt pretty decent... didn't think it was wise to go a 2nd loop, but wanted more. So, I gave my self permission to go part of it.. well should've turned back sooner, but I did not need the inhaler & I didn't go the whole way.. turned around when the breathing was getting a little rough. so very slow on the way back. well you know me, always have to push it a little.....

Oh & I tried the PowerBreathe - did a couple of times & felt fine, then did 4 maybe a little to quickly & started coughing.. well either it helped or the walking yesterday helped. I will continue using it, but maybe a couple puffs at a time for now.

IP and Tom: Thanks for the comments. It does definitely take some training and some buildup in mileage over time, but it is doable...if you want to be that crazy. I lurk in the ultrarunning forum too, and I don't quite think I have the dedication or insanity to do the 50-mile and 100 mile runs. 50k's--not so bad.

IP-Congratulations on the weight loss. My husband just joined weight watchers in January, and he's doing great. He actually gained a pound from last week to this week, but he still has a net loss of about 9 pounds. I just keep encouraging him, and letting him know that a gain now and then is to be expected. He definitely is making better food choices overall, and I'm very proud of him. Keep up the good work.

A little absentminded today... forgot to set my Garmin until .4 into the walk.. then realized I forgot to bring my cellphone & inhaler. I was feeling good this morning & was actually excited to go walk...guess that overrode the safety things.

I went 2 loops - 1.76 miles & felt like I could go more, but without the cellphone & inhaler thought I better not. Anyway, 1.36 of it was timed at 31:44 & guessing another 10 minutes for the other .4 - so about 41:44.. at same point as yesterdays walk (1.31), I was 3 minutes faster. this is fun to be improving by leaps & bounds everyday.

had trouble getting my meds from the pharmacy this week, they ended up transferring it another pharmacy, but told me it was transferred to a different one! oy! I'd already missed yesterday morning's dose because they told me they would have it yesterday (when I tried on to get it on Thursday).... TG for the pharmacy I ended up at - the friendly neighborhood pharmacy - they called the original chain pharmacy to find out what the deal was, then called the other chain pharmacy to get the prescription transferred to them... guess who's gonna get my business from now on??

Why am I telling you all this? well might be interesting to Tom... but also missing the morning steroid turned out to be a problem.. I walked today & only made it .91 of a mile in 24:45 & then had an attack a couple of hours later. It was also colder than the last couple of days, my bronchials just never warmed up like they had the last couple of days... so probably combo of the cold & lack of the steroids... I think that sets me back a couple of days, but am going to rest tomorrow (just to make sure the bronchials aren't too stressed)... and hope for an early spring.

yes I had the scarf over the nose & mouth. it just wasn't working too well though.. guess that shows how bad the bronchials got. I've now taken 3 puffs on the Asmanex, last night & 2 times today( doc told me to take 3 puffs twice a day, when I felt better to take 2 puffs twice a day)... however the prescription says 1 time twice a day... which is what I took until I got sick... anyway, breathing better this evening after a few times of the 3 puffs. I also did yoga today, instead of walking. Ironically, it was warm today! actually in the 70's!! Its suppose to be nice tomorrow too, so will have to try to walk tomorrow.

Hello all,

Slacked yesterday, but I've been fairly consistent. It is very cold here, Philly area, single digits. Thank goodness I workout in a gym and didn't have to run outside today. Actually I did the elliptical, weights and the bike today. Tomorrow is my run day. I'm still cheating on my diet. I have no self-control.

Linda I was going to say sounds like your doing well and then another setback. One that was not even in your control. I hope your back at it soon.

Tom did you get that artic blast as well? We'll have it for at least 3 or 4 more days.

Have a good day all.

Patty - good for you on being consistent! Don't we all cheat on the diet?? lol Persistence not Perfection is the key.

I went out for a walk... wasn't sure I should, but thought I better. I was a little busy this morning, so that took quite a bit air. so decided I'll just go really slow. I went 1.78 miles in 48:31 which was about same min/mile pace as Saturday, but was able to go farther. so guess that's a tiny bit of improvement. one step at a time...gotta remember that.

Tom so nice of you to think I'm an honarary old guy & not a true boomer which I am. Dad fought in WWII came home, went to college, married mom, had eleven kids. I think I qualify. Seriously I have never had so much of an urge to just eat everything in sight until this diet. On the brighter side I'm down 2 more pounds. Woohoo.

Linda nice job getting out there and using restraint on your speed. I know how hard that is. I think when the weather improves you'll really see an improvement.

I did over 3 miles today. I ran 1 mile, walked a 10th, ran another and so on. The first was 11:51,second 11:47 and the third 12:13. That is soo much faster than I was pre-half-marathon.

Have a good day all.

Hi!
Wass!!!! wow! congratulations--What's the baby's name? (I'm really hoping it's not Wassiter, sorry, Tom)
Brooklyn is the hip new place to live these days. There's a Boonie that moved there, I'm sure you know him, he's a chef at A Voce in Manhattan. When you see him tell him hello. Any more concerts in the laundry mat?

HWI: sorry about your grandpa, that's rough.

Linda, CCroz, IP: Howdy!

Tom: I'm still in--no worries. We have a new puppy so my internet time is only at work, which means I don't get much internet time. How's the training going? Mine is sporadic at best for running. I do yoga, high impact aerobics and dog walks A LOT but not enough running. Beauxart is coming up on 3 months so I think I can jog with him soon?

Take care all!
Heidi

Hey there Heidi! Great to see your post & that your still in for the race or run..

Good news! Went out for a walk today, its much warmer! like 50? I went for 2 miles walking for 48:12, avg 24:07 min/mile - improvement of 3 minutes over yesterday. YAY! mile 1- 23:57; mile 2- 24:17.. I was trying to slow myself down the whole way... just like I have to do when I start running after being off. That seems like a good way to handle it, instead of going right up to the oops spot. for now at least.

Tom - haven't used that gadget in a day - need to do that.. did use it a couple of days when I was feeling worse though. thanks for the reminder.

Linda
