Shell - just be careful increasing mileage too quickly. Sometimes we need to pay attention to what is good for us, not necessarily others. It snowed yesterday afternoon & its a SNOW DAY! Lots of snowball fights with all 4 of us this morning!! Too fun! Went out after the icy conditions got better & walked 2 miles... 39:37 a little slower than yesterday, but I listened to you Tom & went slower the first mile (20:24) & mile 2 was 19:12 yay! fastest was 17:14 slower than yesterday, but faster than Monday... so its all good! btw - some of the road still had snow on it & how fun that is to walk in the snow!! hiho there! wasserd checking in (I'm sure by this point only Tom will recognize me, unless there are some other old-timer newbies on here still?). just checking in, in the middle of the night. but I'm not up ready to go running. nope, I'm up for pretty much the only reason I would awake at this hour. I had a beautiful baby boy on December 20! that explains my long hiatus from this discussion group & from running (I didn't even attempt to while pregnant).I hope everyone here is well and I am hoping to check back in to be inspired by your stories, as I ponder a return to running, eventually... best wishes for 2007! wasserd/Deborah ------------------ my profile

Hey Wass - its me Rindaroo - I seem to never go away..lol I just changed my handle for now. CONGRATULATIONS on the baby!!! You just missed my birthday by one day - Dec 19th.So do you have a plan of beginning running again - you can always use a jogger stroller once the kiddo is a little bigger Shell - I"m being careful. I didn't walk until the roads were slushy. Today we have a 2 hour delay for school.. the roads are icy again.. Driving wise I have no interest in getting out there until the roads are better

thanks, Linda and Tom!I do hope to get back to running eventually. I will probably start small with the fitness stuff (pilates, yoga, maybe hook my bike up to the trainer in the living room). not sure if I really want to get a jogging stroller, since we have so little room in our apartment to store stuff! and when I get back to running, I'd like for it to be a bit of an escape. I live near a great park for running now (Prospect Park, in Brooklyn) but will really miss running along the Hudson where I used to live. how's everyone else doing? glad to see Linda is still here and I recognize a couple other posters. how about Miss Piggy? Heidi4eyes? all the best, wasserd ------------------ my profile

Wass - sounds like a great plan! Haven't seen Heidi or MissPiggy in quite awhile here. It sure would be nice to hear from them.Everyday seems to be getting better! 2.04 mile walk 37:05. 18:12 avg, fastest 15:12 - mile 1 18:47, mile 2 17:36 yay! Tom - I think I'm just getting better & able to walk slow enough on the first lap to improve the speed on the second mile. Today I start breathing deeper early in the 2nd mile, pushed it hard & then had to back off some... but my backing of was in the 18 minutes range... wow quite the difference from a week ago. I actually thought about walking farther but decided not to after the backing off in the 2nd mile.. started breathing more shallowly & then after backing off started breathing deeper again - so went a little faster... I'm still not there yet, but gaining ground quickly btw through all of this, it been in either the 20's or 30's.. I wonder how it would be if the temperature was warmer? Linda

Thanks Tom! You are the best about reminding me. I needed to hear that today. Yes you are right of course. It was a setback, a big one! But, not back to the very beginning at least. I could walk the 2 miles, I took the first lap slow & did the second one about 40 seconds faster. Total of 40:57. Really that's all the body could do... I was hoping, wishing for more, but it just wasn't in the cards. I was in SO much pain ( in the diaphragm) yesterday after my walk, I had to lie down for awhile. Had trouble breathing about 6 hours later & more inhaler... so really I deserved to be back to the beginning. So, after your post & after my walk today, I thought to myself, you are lucky that all you lost was a week. Plugging along....

Tom...yah we have a park that has a fantastic trail system for running and biking and it has a levee (I call it a dam) that is paved and long enough with a nice enough grade to work on. I'd go there more but it's about 30 minutes to an hour from my house (depending on traffic) Mileage...this past week was only 12.5, week before that was 16...this week I'm scheduled for 16.5 (no hills)

well it was even worse today, only made it 1.76 miles & only due to a few hits on the inhaler.. I was pretty much down & out for a few hours afterwards. So, looks like I'm being forced to rest for a couple of days & then start anew. so depressing, but I have to be happy that I was able to walk faster than I have in years this time... Linda

Last week I walked 7 days straight. It actually helps the breathing improvement if I do every day...plus the WL. But I certainly should've rested 1 or 2 days in that week. So now I've had 3 days of rest, actually thought I might get some walking in today... but then I vacuumed the house today & the dust got me. so depressing. Thinking if I don't feel better tomorrow, I'll need to call the doc. Feeling pretty pitiful right now, & I hate that!!Linda

I broke down & went to the doctor today.. he says to increase the steroid I'm taking.. hopefully that will help. If this doesn't, then next step is prednisone.

LL//////.........if 7-days works for you, by all means stick with it......maybe have an Off-Week-Strategy in place if you're having a harder time than usual....... ........does the doc have Any Ideas about how this is getting Triggered??.......obiviously Dust is one culprit....... .....this would be easier if we can get Cause and Effect results for it....... ..........kind of a puzzle.............just keep hanging in there, and do what you can do (which is more than most people)... ......I know this is frustrating.........------------------ nothing takes the place of persistance....

This is VERY frustrating!! It seems that I just went a little faster than the body could handle at that point. Before this happened, I had improved to the point that dust was not bothering me at all. So not sure if normal dust is a trigger but a side effect of the bronchials not being in very good shape. The doctor says this is very confusing, I shouldn't be having so much problems.. he didn't change much but additional steroids to help the bronchials calm down. I go back on 2/16 still, for a followup to this appt.It seems more of the same. A nurse friend of mine called me tonight, she suggested after I have a good day (where I've gone faster) than maybe the next day I go for a slow walk.. just to give the bronchials a breather... I guess that's the same logic you're giving me with the every other day. But, this way I could still be working on the WL. So I may try that. Linda

okay Tom, I ordered one. I saw the thread & was thinking about it. With your comment, it made me go look & investigate some more. funny thing she mentioned how she used to blow up balloons for working her lungs. I've never been able to do that, or blow out candles on a birthday cake (since I was a kid).. guess this might tell me something, huh? Its worth a try..
