Linda...........BRRRRRRRRRRRRR that's cold! Good job on the 3!

Tom...my quads were sore after that interval workout. I guess you use the quads more with speed???? Did 5 miles today. Hijacked a local running group and ran with them at an 11 pace for 5/1. Worked out nice. Going slower is nicer sometimes! It's such a red level day for me right now. I think the best think I can do is some Yoga...a nice warm bath...and maybe hide in my room

Tom//Happy Holidays! I didn't forget about your motivation, and right now I could use a little again. The Winter has been mild here aroud Chicago, but I haven't run since Thanksgiving. I figure last year I took about 5 months off, so if I start now, that is a huge improvement Anyway, my wife and I are on a diet to slim down a little. I need to drop about 10-15 pounds. We are going with Nutrisystem and I have dropped about 7 pounds so far. Running seems to make my appetite soar, so I am a little nervous about sticking with the diet and trying to start up running again. However, I did get some new running gear from the wife for Christmas which is tugging at me to get out there.

Anyway, I was hoping everyone here had a great holiday and has been able to stick with the exercise. I noticed not too many of the posters that were around before are anymore. Hopefully, they are just hybernating like I was and are coming back. This is a really inspirational post and you (TOM) take care of everyone here like your family. Thanks! This post is one of the main reasons I keep coming back each year!

Everyone have a great weekend! Catch you soon Tom! Maybe I'll get my running shoes out now.

Morning all!

FHZ - My handle used to be Rindaroo, but due to lots of asthma problems I've changed it to Live & Learn... maybe go back to Rindaroo when I'm back to running. Good for you starting back earlier this year! I need to lose 12, lack of running has taken its toll... I'm on a new kick to get my fruits, veggies, dairy, water, vitamins, exercise & doing something for myself every day... actually part of a challenge with a Weight Watchers group... its interesting I'm finding I'm not eating the junk when I eat healthy, go figure!

Yesterday I went out & did 3 miles in an hour approximatele (a little over on both), this time all at once, with no breaks yakking with DH. It was a cold & foggy all day!! I had to use the scarf the entire time, was bundled up & had a beanie on... lol at the people who drove by me staring! Anyway, I think I overdid it a little, maybe because of the cold? took the forerunner & it said I went down to 18 min miles a few times.. which is where I seem to start seeing symptoms walking. I would slow down when I needed to, however needed to use the inhaler about 1 1/2 hours afterwards, just felt like I was starting to have trouble breathing, so took 2 hits & then was fine... maybe with all the meds I'm taking right now, it just doesn't get to that fullblown asthma attack anyway, thought I'd do yoga today, to give the bronchials a rest.

Shell - glad you had fun with the running group! Glad you were able to run slower with them..

Linda

Linda...you're so awesome! You just keep on getting out there. Inspiring

Tom...Opinion please...since I know that things like intervals and hills are taxing...I've got them scheduled every OTHER week on lower mileage weeks...(every other week I drop my long runs by 50% and 30%) sound good??? FLawed???

Ready to train smart and get started. Just haven't made it out there yet. One of those, I'll get to it tomorrow attitudes that I just can't seem to break. The diet is going well, so I am very happy about that. Although in the back of my head, the pounds lost could be the muscle from my legs.....hopefully not. I will keep checking in since I think reading everyones posts is my biggest motivator. Thanks agian for the advice.

went for a walk today, only made it one loop. Decided to stop since I didn't want to overdo again. Not sure what to make of this, my overdoing on Saturday was in the fog & so was today. I think I've been out there when it was colder & clear or raining & I did better. Does this make any sense?

Starting to wonder if I should try the treadmill even though the doctor has told me not to use it yet.

FHZ//........I'm currently doing heavy-hands running in place over the winter on one work-out..........the main thing is Think when you can fit in a run or work-out.....once you have a Plan, it's easier to just go with it......
.........so, as long as the Desire is there, we're just talking about a Schedule Problem........hang in there......
.........and Think Aerobic Thoughts........
LL//.......maybe you should add notes on Weather Conditions in your Running Log..........also Polution Index off the Weather Channel.........there has to be Some Reason a work-out goes great, and another one just doesn't do it for you....
..........if the doc says lay off the TM, I'd go with that for now til you see if he knows what he's talking about.....

Thanks Tom.. yes I'm logging in the weather conditions too.. funny thing I started a new log for the new year & it suggested to write down weather conditions.

This morning I figured out I was a tad bit congested, I did have a sore throat the other day but minor & thought it was due to the heater being on at night. Maybe the rest days helped to get only a slight cold... well, I realized that I was actually breathing pretty decently. The extra meds seem to prevented a bronchial shutdown. So, I decided to go for a slow walk - one loop - just to see. I did that & felt ok, not great, but not bad either. So, I quit just to be on the safe side. but my thinking was a short walk would be good for the bronchials. Interesting thing, it was colder today, snow on the ground this morning, snowed earlier this morning while sending the kids off on the bus. I felt better walking than I did yesterday. maybe there is something to that moisture in the air thing.

FH...GET OUT THERE AND WHIP IT!

Linda...isn't it weird how the littlest things can make or break our runs, walks, weights...I hope you are able to find a pattern that will allow you to exercise like you want to.

Tom...I've decided to nix the intervals...I've got YEARS to get faster, have no plans on winning things, so what's the hurry. I will however work on hills just because I'll have to run hills in the VT hm and I want to be somewhat prepared. Anyway...did a tempo run on the DM Monday (My leg just doesn't like that thing), Did an easy run yesterday, rest day today! WOO HOO!

2 hour snow delay for the kids today, our first ever they slept in an hour, played in the snow & got hot chocolate!

After the bus got here at 10, I went out for a walk. Made it 2 loops! YAY! I felt much better... but held it at that, being cautious right now. oh that took 37 1/2 minutes.

Walked 1.94 miles today in 42 minutes, I'm using my Garmin so that I can see the avg pace & fastest pace. The reason I want to see this is to determine how fast I'm walking, if I'm walking too fast & if this has any effect on how I feel. The day I overdid it, I had an avg of 21 min miles, each mile has a fastest of 18:30/pace.. today my avg was 21 min miles & had a fastest pace of 17:05... I felt very good today.I haven't seen that fast of pace walking since before I got sick. in June of 2005. what I have decided to do is just walk at what feels comfortable, slow down if I start to feel uncomfortable (as in breathing or pain in my lower chest/diaphragm area). I think doing roughly 2 miles walking for awhile, I should slowly increase to faster walking, eventually jogging (just like the doc said). I don't think there is any reason to push myself to go farther distances, longer times than that. when I do, I tend to push myself too far... so this is my thinking at this point, really its more of a rehab mentality instead of pretending I'm fine mentality. (which I should've had all along.)

LL////..........makes sense (you are really getting into this Graphs and Charts,,,,,good, we need an Edge).....
.......ok. so keep up with How Far and How Fast......if we can figure out what works, you can work to improve on it......
........it's the Not Knowing why you had a Good One vs a Bad One that has to be so frustrating......
........I'm all in favor of this approach........
..........hey, did you get a New Christmas Garmin??

No Garmin for Christmas, I bought this one a little over ayear ago. I walked another 2 miles today in 41 1/2 minutes. Avg 20:38 min/mile & fastest 17:43 pace. I felt pretty good, no pain at all, but would slow down when I'd start to cough or feel some tightness in the lower chest area. Yesterday (down to 17:05) & last Saturday (down to 18's) I felt pain.. so am thinking too much of that pain, leads to overdoing. Honestly, if I hadn't decided on this new strategy, I would've done 3 loops today.. which might have been a bad thing, so am happy for this new 2 mile strategy for now. plugging on...

the pain actually comes on fast & at speeds one wouldn't expect.. I think its just the body saying, not enough air.. I am not experiencing the pain just walking around the house anymore - yay! This taking it slow & easy thing helps me to focus on the "before the pain" happens..I guess taking the mind out of it is a good thing, since the mind is always saying, "you can do it, go for it"

walked 2 miles today & yesterday. yesterday I hit the oops spot at 16:21 pace... & had to slow it way down. Ended up with avg of 20:38 min/mile, 1st mile 1 1/2 minutes faster than the second. that was a big oops.. its just so hard to control when I'm feeling good...

Today I walked 2 miles & was pleasantly surprised I didn't do myself in yesterday. I made a VERY concious effort to not get excited & stop paying attention to the body, 20:12 avg min/mile & 2nd mile 1/2 a minute faster than the first.. like it should be. fastest comfortably 17:34 pace. However, towards the end I started feeling super good & bouncy... it took every oz I had to refrain from continuing & running... but I did it. I've decided that I will NOT run until I can walk the second mile walking as fast as my legs will possibly go. Maybe these strategies will help me get a handle on this...its like playing tricks on my mind..

LL//..........''oops spot''........I love it............sounds like you're doing this right, the Holding Back will be the tough part (as you know)......
.............but once you get a couple of 2nd legs in, kick it in if it feels right and sees how it goes (back off rapidly if you need to).......
...........good work-out...........made better once we get you more air//////

2 miles again today, 19:35 avg, fastest 16:48 . I pushed it a little too hard on the first mile, but luckily didn't hit the oops spot.. but did need to slow down on the second mile.. figuring it was ok, since I improved on the total avg. Again, got excited cuz I was walking so fast! boy my handle sure is appropriate!!!

Oh tom...I'm trying not to. Last night was the TM and today I ran with someone and it's like animals chasing each other. You just keep trying to keep up even though both are saying WE SHOULD SLOW DOWN! BUt I hardly think 15 mpw is high mileage.
