First - I wish I had runners in my family, count yourself lucky. Its been a little crazy here in Oregon with all the family here.. no they are not runners... MIL just told me I should just start back on Monday (when they leave)! They just don't understand. I finally got some time to at least get on the treadmill today. But I could only walk gradually up to 3.0 for 30 minutes. I don't know what is up with that! I was doing so much better too.... maybe the few days off hurt, well at least I did it & obviously I need to keep doing it more consistently. Its been a little chilly here, more snow on the foothills down to 2500 feet on Thanksgiving eve, we are at 2200 - not quite to us yet. Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day! Linda

Hey everyone...definately no runners in my family. Well, my grandmother used to run 5 miles a day, won something in the senior olympics I think...but she's been gone for a few years. And had a stroke a few years prior to that. But I think everyone in both sides of my family was fairly health conscious (except my father) Anyway...Linda...I guess some days you have it...some you don't. go figure! Tom...hope you had a great thanksgiving! Had a pretty good run today. Was supposed to do 3.5m but ended up doing 4 to get away from the masacare of the mosquitos. HAHAHA Overall...pretty good...damn good time too!

Today we had a winter wonderland when we woke up! So gorgeous! So, decided to get on the treadmill instead of trying to brave the outside world (plus the inlaws left today). I did 2.06 mile in 40 minutes, 20 minutes warmup walk to 3.1/ 5 min R at 3.6/5W at 3.3/5R at 3.6/5W at 3.3/ 2min cooldown. I really could only run 5 minutes at a time, well my stomach was bothering me due to the IBS & was on Friday too.. but really I think its the difference with the treadmill being a consistent speed... anyway I'll keep on plugging. The only machine available was a stair master. Did it for about 30mins. but I don't really get the point of it, maybe I was doing it wrong...oh well. I was doing something I suppose. I think Linda's weather is coming this way...supposed to be cooold next couple of days! Have a good one, all!

Linda...I live in Texas...mosquito is the state bird. HAHAHA just kidding. Tom...I'll let you know when Texas gets cold...but by the time I post it, it'll be hot again. Riddle me this...Why do my longs runs seem to be easier than my short ones. Is it because on my long runs I have walk breaks??? Does it take me that long to warm up that short runs are too short? What's the deal??? I HATE my short runs...it's a constant battle to keep going. And why are my BEST paced runs between 4 and 5 pm? I'm frustrated can you tell? I did 4 miles at an avg pace of 10:03 and today I did 2.5 at an avg pace of 10:30????

Hi all! Glad everyone had a good Thankgiving! I'm having problems being patient with my progress (or lack thereof). I know I'm coming from a poor fitness base (ocassional walking or recreational biking) but geez almighty how long does it take before this get easier??? Today I did a 3-miler. I decided to throw in some walk breaks because I can feel burnout looming and am trying to back off. 14:00min miles! And it was just as hard as the first 3-miler I did. Harder, even. I guess I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or just being impatient. I'm going to do the HH novice spring training because it looks doable and it conveniently ends on the day of my 4.2 mile marathon relay. But I guess I'll just go SLOW and hope I can get to a reasonable level of fitness in 12 weeks. Julia

JULIA//........welcome,,,,,,,it takes a while to build up a running base..... .......how long have you been running?? .........are you following any plan??.....normally, I'd suggest running for X-amount of minutes, don't worry about speed or distance at this point.....if you run 30-min 3-times a week, you'll find the endurance improves almost every other week....... ......but go slow, this is a life-long exercise, so no hurry getting there,,,,, .back in the 70s I ran 3-miles for about 3-years, one day I ran 6-miles and was amazed how easily I did it,,,,but I had the base ,,,,,,, and 3-miles isn't a bad distance if you're going for fitness........ ............so the OTHER question is------What do you want to get from your Running?? ------------------ nothing takes the place of persistance....

Hi Tom! My story is... did C25K in August and September. Did it for time, not distance. So during October and November worked on SLOWLY increasing distance. Have been at about 9 mpw. Now I've decided to do Hal Higdon's Sring Training (novice). My thing is that the longer I do it the harder it seems to get. I think I may just be expecting too much too soon. But my HR is STILL up in the 180's no matter how slow I go. No aerobic conditioning here, I guess. My short-term goal is to do that Gasparilla marathon relay of 4.2 miles on February 18. I'm doing it with some classmates and don't want to let them down. Maybe I'm getting too hung up on that. Long term I guess fitness would be my goal, I'd like to be able to do some races and not be dead last! Julia

Haven't done any exercise since Monday! The cold weather is zapping the desire out of me! Geez, I need to figure this out.Today I finally go to the first pulmonologist appt since I've been up here... oh & a chest xray too. ironically I'm now feeling better - is it the lack of exercise & not pushing myself too much ? or is it that I'm now over a month past getting sick. should be an interesting conversation. Julia - hang in there! it will get better!! I'm the poster child of that... the most important thing is to be persistent & just keep getting out there. Linda

Hello once again, Just to let you know, I did have the best of intentions to get back to running 2 1/2 weeks ago. Unfortunately my mom had a stroke 2 weeks ago and all of last week I spent visiting her in the morning or at night. This of course put running out of my schedule. This week I got back to running in the morning. I'm still doing the 2/10 mile walking warmup followed by 1/10 run and 1/10 walk for 2 miles and another 2/10 cool down. Today I increased the run/walk part to 3 miles. That is I ran Mon., Wed. & Fri. and did weights Tues. and Thurs. My mom is better although she struggles to find the right word. She did inpatient rehab and was released yesterday to my sister's house.Linda sometimes we just need a rest. You may just be pushing yourself too much. Everytime you go out you seem to run a bit more. Maybe you need every other day to just be a stroll with no running. Just a thought. I just know that I have a tendancy to concentrate on my goal and not allow myself to rest too much when I'm tired. Shell wow 5 miles. Wtg girl. Take the rests and don't feel quilty just get out when your able and feeling up to it. An extra bone, huh. Are you mutating into one of the xmen? lol. First hello to another Irish Patty. I have the worst memory so I thought that would be my best bet for remembering my member name. I'm a very slow runner, but I tell myself at least I'm out there doing a form of exercise I like and look forward to. Julia hello and welcome. Your doing great speed is something that comes with just being out there consistently and having a good running base. Don't worry about it for another 6 more months. Then you can start working on a speed workout once a week. By the way I think your faster than I am. Tom did you have a good turkey day? The btt muscle is still bothering me a bit. This past weekend though I was out hiking and it didn't bother me at all. Maybe it's getting better. I'll see what next week brings. Have a good weekend all. Patty

Hi Patty and Linda! Thanks for the encouragement. I will keep getting out there, and will TRY to be more patient. I never realized what an impatient person I am. Today did 1.5 miles, 13min miles but kept my HR in 160's. And more importantly, felt comfortable. Patty-Sorry about your mom and glad she's doing ok. Julia

JULIA//.........you're doing fine,,,,,,,maybe just stick to the shorter stuff til it feels right........and count on Adrenaline helping you in the relay, you aren't training for the Olympics, just let your body do the distance a month before the race, and it'll cover the distance....main thing, train regularly...... SHELL// .........if you lace 'em up and hit the street, you're definitely a Runner........sorry you're sick though, take it easy til you're well........ LL//////........maybe the rest helped, you have been pretty hard at it....... .......enjoy the break, and go for it when you know it's Time... FIRST//..........no biggie, just think about how you can fit it in your schedule........the week after Thanksgiving doesn't could anyway........Use your Mind Grasshopper//////// IP/////.........you have ALWAYS been one of our harder training runners........no need to be hard on yourself, stuff happens, you handled it,,,,,,,,,your 10/1 program is smart, just stick with it, you'll be flying by Spring....... ..........glad your mom is better...... ................ok guys..........cold stuff's here, some schedules to re-adjust, a few colds to combat..........about normal for this time of year........start back easy, don't blame yourself for a missed run, and just enjoy the work-outs........------------------ nothing takes the place of persistance....

Hi IP! Sorry about your mom, glad she's better. Sometimes we need to worry about the important things - looks like you did a good job of that. As for me, yeah you're right of course... I probably need to go back to that 4x a week - it worked pretty well for me... actually what I need is for my bronchials to heal to get back to that first. I'm going to follow new doc's orders (see below) & hopefully I can get this asthma to a maintained place instead of uncontrolled.Tom - ok so I bought a new running coat, will be good for rainy weather, lined in fleece & with a hood.. had my pulmonologist appointment today. You were right when you said ( a while back) it will be good to have someone new to look at my situation. He said I have been basically treating the symptoms & not been on a maintenance plan. So, he is putting me on a maintenance plan. He says this will allow the bronchials to heal. He's increasing the Foradil to 2x a day (as a maintenance drug & not to help me get through the exercise), taking me off the Qvar and I'm to use asmanex 2x a day (another maintenance drug) & Xyrenex? for a rescue (after exercise). He said to continue the Singulair, but it will be eventually removed. Also, he says to do NO running for at least 2 weeks (but I am allowed to walk outside but not on the treadmill). Interestingly enough, he told me to bundle up & make sure I use a scarf to cover my mouth while walking in the cold. I guess the reasoning is that I need to give this new medicine regiment a chance to start working before I do anything to irritate the bronchials (he's also worried about house dust so no treadmill). Julia - sounds great on your run! comfortable is what we're aiming for. It will get faster & longer as you continue on. Running really teaches one patience, if you listen to the signs your body gives you. But, it is worth it in the end. Ok tomorrow I need to get a prescription filled for the rescue & then I'll go for a walk. Linda
