Shell - sorry about your husband. how is he doing now? Congrats on the 3 miles! now I bet if you went a little slower, you would enjoy it.Those Boomers do it again... have just the right words when I needed it the most. I was wondering the last couple of days whether my symptoms at this point were due to bronchial shutdown or being sick... so this morning I found the courage to test it out. I did 20 minutes walking very slow on the treadmill this morning between 2.0-2.5. Just that I could do that, tells me its bronchial shutdown at this point... but have not been able to vacuum or other normal stuff.. cuz seems I'm walking too fast around the house at this point. so I'm back to the recovery, so life will get better again. Thanks Tom! you were right... I was much better than a week ago, usually it takes me 2 weeks to figure out & have the guts to test starting the recovery process again, this time only 1 - just about at the right time. I talked to the kids pediatrician yesterday about my asthma & she has them on a list to get flu vaccines (actually to help me)... so hopefully, I'll be able to get one at the pulmonologist office.I was breathing better last night & this morning, more energy.. yay! still a ways to go, but actually got the vacuum out last night - cuz I felt like I could do it. Got on the treadmill again this morning & did 22 minutes, gradually up to 3.0 this time, used the candle blowing when I needed it. definite improvement from yesterday, will keep on plugging.... how is your back doing these days Tom? Shell - thanks for the support, you are always so great at that! when is your next run?

Linda...is there such a thing as "seasonal asthma" because if there is, I think I have it. I usually have a harder time breathing in the colder weather for a little bit and then it passes. Next run...race wisel I was contemplating one on the 11th, but I may just wait until december or Feb. (February for sure) I'm supposed to run 2.5 today...think I'll try tom's spiraling down the track thing. I need some change of pace.

NO spiraling...team was using the track...BUT i ran at the park and did 2.5 with an avg of 9:30 pace. I don't know where it came from, but I did it! Damn, if only I could find the secret formula to the good run! (I'd be rich)

Shell - try warming up by walking first, before you start running.. I do that for at least 15 minutes before I start. It makes a big difference for the bronchials. don't know if that's asthma or just that its cold....how cold are we talking??Tom - not that I'm happy about vacuuming... but it actually takes a lot of energy, breath to do... today actually cleaned 3 bathrooms.. cleaners got me a bit on the tub, guess I should use the mask while doing that.. glad you're back feels better - let us know on the bone density issues.

Linda...I live in SE Texas... It doesn't get very cold here. It's usually hot and humid...right now it's cool and dry...but this "asthma" or whatever it is doesnt bother me when running...least I don't think it does.

Hi guys, happy weekend!Did the treadmill thing at the gym this am. Although, it is going to be a nice day so I could have run outside, but I was worried the day would get going, and I wouldn't ever get to it...DS has football game, DD has soccer... Shell...how is your DH's hand? I hope he makes a full recovery. 9:30 pace...I'm so jealous! Linda...my dd has asthma and I'm amazed at how she handles it. She is on some great preventive meds so her flare ups are fewer and far between, usually triggered by an upper respiratory infection. I totally feel for you. Trouble breathing is one of the worst things there is! Hang in there! btw...my dd is an awesome runner. Take care of your back Tom! question: a friend of mine who was at the gym this am thought I should try intervals to improve my speed...like do 4.8 mph for 2mi, then 5.5 for 1 mi, and keep alternating. Is this a good idea? Have a good day all. Love your smilies Shell!

First time...DH is still in a lot of pain, but thank god he didn't loose his fingers. I have heard that intervals will help with increasing speed. In fact, all the running programs I've seen involve some form of intervals.

First - I was diagnosed about 1 1/2 years ago & they have never really been able to get me on maintenance... i am on 3 meds, but I kept being triggered way too often. In January, I was running 5-6 miles at about 11 min/miles & improving all the time - but now its a struggle just to run... would love to be back to where I was in January.. very cool with your DD! I hope to be more like her one day.Shell - {{HUGS}} to your DH! Ok so here is my two cents - before you do speed intervals, you should really build your base.. the more you do, the more your speed will increase. I think speed intervals are more for after you have a good base & have found that place where you don't improve anymore. My experience was have a long run, do it slow so you can finish it, keep doing it & you'll find your speed increases... In healthier days, I would workout 4 times a week - one 5 miler as my slow long run, one 3 mile tempo run (as fast as I could go), 2 - 2 mile runs on the treadmill (which is always pretty slow for me)...before I started this I ran about 11:15 miles for a 5K distance. When I added the 5 milers, I went from 14 min/miles - cuz I had to slow way down to make 5 miles to 11 min/miles on the 5 miler. Tempo runs were more at 10 min/miles...I wasn't done improving yet... increased to 6 miles - but we don't know the end of the story yet - because I've haven't been healthy enough since... anyway, I hope you can see that those long runs & a tempo run in there - really make a difference in improvement... I have done speed intervals, but didn't I saw a bigger difference in this strategy. Linda

Hey Linda! Right now I'm on a 10k program...which isn't asking for intervals or hills (which don't exist here anyway ) and what she has me doing is 3 short runs (try to complete without taking a break right now they are 2.5,3,and 2.5) and 1 long run with a 1 minute break every ten minutes. My speed has just been going up and up on it's own. Yesterday I kept looking at my garmin going "slow down girl" but even when I thought I was going slow, I was flying. I must have fueled up enough or something...I don't know what the deal was. We'll have to see how I do on my 4 miles tomorrow.

Sounds like you're doing about what I was doing kinda (well of course I had to do 4 before I could do 5)... I thought about a program at the time, but decided (with Tom's help) against it - due to my breathing issues. So, if you find you're having trouble with any part, remember you don't have to go strictly according to the program - you can slow it down a little if you need to. Although it wasn't the running that got me in January, it was Santa Ana winds, then a fire way too close to where I lived a few weeks after, a cold turning into respiratory infection... now it just seems I'm too impatient!! I'm hanging in! An interesting read for you would be the "My Handle" thread in the Boomers Forum...might be end of 1st or to the 2nd page by now.As for the cold, I've seen lots of comments about how people have trouble breathing in the cold... more so for asthmatics... but truly I think its really that the bronchials have to get warmed up... I found if I didn't warm up (no matter the weather), I'd have really bad asthma attacks after, and bad bronchiospasms during my run... so I warm up every time (15 to 20 minutes...doctors orders). So if you find you're having trouble, just warm up first, then run. btw - your cold is probably similar to Socal cold... lol... different story in Oregon though Feeling better again today, definitely will hit the treadmill later!

Thanks Linda and there have been times when I've had to readjust my schedule due to my leg feeling no quite up to it, or me just not feeling quite up to it! I am much smarter about listening to my body!

Well...I did my long run today. (4 miles) Did intervals of 10-1 and really made sure I kept my pace between 10-11. It averaged out at 10:37...now I've just my brisket on my leg and am drinking coffee...I can't believe how far I've come. I was contemplating doing a jingle bell 5 mile run in december and I think I might be able to do that! Perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel

Yesterday I got worse after untangling a ball of yarn - seems some fibers must have got in the bronchials - grrr... put that down, & then I started feeling better - too crazy I tell ya! so rested yesterday.Today I got on the TM & did 1.30 miles walking - 28 minutes, up to 3.2 - tomorrow I have a PFT (pulmonary function test) at the new doc's. Shell - its kinda weird that having an injury helps us learn some lessons... you have done great! just be careful not to push it too much. Linda
