Yes I have a new handle... this is how I live my life & how I've been feeling a lot lately.I'm officially congested, nose & chest.... grrrrr obviously this is why I couldn't even walk the hills.. just to stubborn to rest when I should've. So now I'll be resting til this congestion is gone. Shell - how are you doing? you're almost there! remember to have fun & start slow. Linda

Shell...you are going to do great. Really! Go slow, find someone along the way to chat with. I had only been running for 6 weeks before I did a 5K (the only one I've done). But, it was so fun. You'll get caught up in the excitement. Also don't worry about your time. I don't know how fast you run, but I did mine in 41 minutes...Have Fun!

Ok, here's my race report! (FINALLY) Pre Race Report: 9:14 pm (CST)…I have my racing uniform consisting of Texas flag shorts, a Texas flag shirt, and Texas flag socks, out and ready to go. I thought I was being somewhat original until I looked at some racing pictures from a race that occurred a couple of weeks ago. Texans seem to have a thing for Texas attire. Oh well! I am loading my MP3 player up with inspirational songs. I had almost 2 hours of music and have since edited it down to 1 hour and 18 minutes! That's more than enough and what a mix! Made sure to put in Eye of the Tiger HAHAHA All day I've been kind of spastic about this race. Not really knowing what to expect; it being my first race. I’ve had lots of feelings of bailing out. But as the day has progressed I’ve felt more super girl-like. As I listen to my mix, while writing this, I’ve decided that Steppenwolf isn't going to make the cut. I'm going to do this race, and it's going to go well, I’m going to be proud of myself! Just looked at my garmin. 2 hours left. Better charge it just in case and put a battery in my MP3 player. Then off to bed for a sleepless night! I can't wait to tell the running moms all about it! Race Day: 5:23 am I've been up a couple of times during the night of course I’ve been dreaming about this race all night. Woke up earlier with a Charlie horse in both my legs. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, not before a race!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God for John being there! So now I’m awake and making coffee, checking CR to see if any mom has posted anything yet…Nothing yet. Time to begin my ritual 6:03 am…I’m showered, shaved, uniformed up, ready to go…My kids are still asleep. Trying to wake them up. 6:32 am… I have found it interesting to note how my emotions have varied over the past couple of days! Yesterday morning, I was freaking out. I was ready to bail. By the afternoon and evening I was turning into SUPERGIRL!!!!!!!!! When I woke up this morning I was kind of numb, now I’m just getting SILLY! The race and beyond… When I got to the race, I picked up my packet which consisted of my handy dandy t-shirt, my race number, and a bunch of flyers. After pinning my number on, I tried handing off my goody bag to my kids who were already complaining about it being cold and not wanting to hold the bag. (Sigh) From there, it was nothing to do but wait. (and shiver) At 8 am they lined us up like a heard of cattle, told us that they were only keeping the time of the top 3 men women and children under 12 (KIDS UNDER 12???) because we didn’t have chips, and then the horn sounded and the heard moved and I moved with it. It was just natural. (minus the guy WALKING while TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE) Most of the course was on jogging trails throughout the subdivision so the lanes were narrow and of course there were people running side by side making passing on the grass tricky. But once I got past most of the clutter, I found a really comfortable pace and just hung with it. After the first mile, which came faster than I expected, I found myself behind a group of 4, but we were all running the same pace, same formation, so it was sort of like being part of choreographed team. Kind of neat. Eventually I passed them. Before the race, they had told us at mile 2 there would be water, and sure enough there was water at mile two (according to my garmin). Gonna have to learn the trick of drinking water from a cup while running…just didn’t work out too well for me. Half a mile from the water station there was a 2 mile sign…ok, someone’s marked his wrong and this race is going to be a bit longer than expected. So I ran and ran. I was amazed at so many little kids running the race. I raced a few of them for fun. But for the most part I was just within my own world going from point a to point b. I was at a great pace, and enjoying the moment. Finally, I could see the finish line and I kicked it up a notch and crossed the finish line at 34 minutes and according to my garmin the race was actually 3.4 miles! As soon as I went to stop, I realized my stomach wasn’t going to let me do that so I walked past my family. DH (darling husband) and FIL(father in law) understood what I was doing, but DD#2 (darling daughter #2 = Stacey) came running up beside me going “Can we leave yet??” And soon after I was being quickly escorted to my truck to leave. No time to revel in the glory of finishing my first 5k…such is the life of me BUT I enjoyed myself, and can’t wait to do it again.

Awesome Shell!!! You had a wonderful time & want to do again. BTW - Both my 5Ks I was like that the couple days before. I'm feeling better, I had a couple of days of barely breathing but have gotten a lot of sleep the last couple of days. Going to give it a couple of more days before I get back out there. Linda

SHELL///////........naw, you look good..........and next time a lot of this won't come as a surprise.........(after a few dozen races, they actually are a lot alike)...... FIRST//.........yep, the TM is awkward at first........I finally went in when I knew the gym was deserted and spent an hour just messing with the thing............0 elevation and 3.4mph is now where I start it out, as you warm up, and watch your feet while you run on it, you can hit Cruising Speed and move it up and down depending on how it feels that day.......so just mess with it til you get a setting that feels Just Right...........nice work-out........------------------ nothing takes the place of persistance....

funny...don't feel like I was racing...I wasn't really aggressively trying to pass people...I wasn't growling or thinking in my head...here I come! I'm coming to pass you!...of course we were on a side walk so that was tricky to do and made me nervous about twisting an ankle...I guess my next goal would be to do my next 5k a little bit faster!

...........ok.........next race, match strides with the runner in front of you,,,,,then take the next one///// .........and (if the shin co-operates) work on a Kick from 1/2-mile out.......... ........................what I used to do for Pace was start from the Outside lane of a Track, spiral in 1-lane each lap til you've done 10-laps--------and Kick for the last two,,,,,a little over 5-k but it'll teach you Pace for a 5-k,,,,,,,,,,,,mess around with it, see how it works....... ................(but you really were Racing)........------------------ nothing takes the place of persistance....

Happy Halloween!Did another 30 mins on the treadmill. Having the exact readout on your work out is kind of cool. I did 2.42 miles and burned 242 calories! Ate it back with one halloween cookie...oh well! Kids are getting ready to go out in the COLD! Glad I'm not going with them. (I actually don't care for Halloween much...but the kids like it!) Have a great night all!
