Linda...thanks for the info...MIL has been under the care of a pulminary dr for a while now which is why she had to have part of her lung removed. (Smoking)

Anyway...I try to encourage her.

1 week until my first race!!!!!!!!!!

Okay so that all seems confusing... Foradil is the preventative one, I'm suppose to take it 1x a day, Qvar is an additional preventative because without it I was getting triggered in Socal, I take it 1x a day also.

Foradil is also the one I use for exercise (which is normally albuterol or something like it) so typically I arrange my taking the Foradil to about an hour before I exercise, on days I don't exercise, I take it usually in the morning along with the other 2. Once he took me off Serevent & Albuterol, & switched me to Foradil - my peakflows have been much better & no exercise related asthma attacks either.

My pulmonologist in Socal was very active (a bike rider) & since I was so active before all this, he wanted me to get back to being active...not become a non-functioning person.. I owe him a lot. Hopefully your MIL's pulmonologist can help her do that too.. great of you to encourage her!

So excited for you in your first race! remember don't go out too fast - most important thing I think.. there will be lots of adrenalin going at the time!!! It'll be fun.

MIL kept saying Floradil is not a rescue!!!!!! To which my reply was. Yes, I know, she (you) knows. Funny how people on the other side of the country who you don't even know can be concerned for you

I used to think a friend of mine was weird because he said on the days before his race he would be quiet and reserved primarily focusing on the upcoming race...I understand now. I've been doing the same thing.

Shell - tell her thanks for worrying! The pharmacist who filled my first prescription had a cow! lol So I asked TomWhite to check it out for me... seems Foradil peaks after a couple of hours, so not a rescue per se.. but in my case normal rescues were not working. When I'd have an attack, I would have to use the albuterol like 8-10 times & then wait for it to work... because I'd have these BAD ones about 2-3 hours after running. So, that's when the doc took me off the albuterol/Serevent & switched to Foradil... Foradil before exercise (usually about an hour) & then it works well through the workout & for hours after.. have not had an attack since. Doc told me to use as a rescue if needed, but I've never needed to do that. Plus my peak flows went up! On Serevent, I was still living at about 350 & feeling like crap! Foradil, I live at 450-500 when I'm running well I guess its been a good solution for runners... the doc has another patient who is a competitive runner & it works well for her, so that's where he got the idea for me. Seems my situation is VERY similar to hers.

When are you running this week? What's your plan? I suspect you'll be a little nervous this week - I guess that's quietness is probably due to the nerves...can't wait to hear about it afterwards.

Linda...my race is scheduled for the 28th (sat) I have my last long run today for 3.5, and then my regular 2, 2.5, 2 during the week. I'm getting more and more nervous thinking about it.

nervousness sounds completely normal. sounds like a good schedule to me, just make sure you have a day or two before the race resting.

Did an hour workout today.. 1 mile warmup walk (22 minutes), 2.73 miles run/walk (25minutes running, 13 walking 8R/4W/2R/2W/8R/2W/2R/2W/2R/2W/3R/1W ) not quite where I was but will be back there soon

Shell - that's what I've done on my 2 5Ks. Just thought I'd make sure I was rested up... if you want some exercise on Thursday, maybe go for a walk.

As for me, I went to a pumpkin patch with my DD's Kindergarten class yesterday. I didn't take my Foradil beforehand. That was a mistake - lot of fast walking back & forth making sure those little ones were behaving... today I went out on the hills & could only walk.. So I did 2 laps, 1.80 recovery walking miles. Better than nothing I guess.

I made an appointment for a pulmonologist here in Oregon today, can't get in til 11/27 & they have to have ALL my records too...anything related to this situation which means records from my primary care doc, pulmonologist, cardiologist & xrays, CTs... OY! guess I should've called earlier! at least I do have enough meds to last me another month. Hopefully, I can get all my docs to cooperate.

SHELL//////..........always go with your Gut..........(except for that Fried Cheese Thing we discussed earlier in the thread)......
RIN////.........this could be GOOD...........you're living in the Running Capital of the World,,,,,,,,
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it would make sense their pulmonologists would be really up on this stuff........hopefully they'll have some new ideas.......
............that said, ya done good under Difficult Pumpkin Related Circumstances............with your tolerance for Exercise with Minimal Oxygen, a race 10-miles above sea-level would be a gimmie.......(Himalaya 10-K perhaps??).....nice going......

FIRST//////..........easy there,,,,,,,,(unless you're getting paid to run)........this is fixable------

.........1-.lay out your stuff, 2-get up when you would have run, 3-lace 'em up and hit the street..........4-maybe a nice out-and-back for the first week, just to get the ''feel'' back...

.........we get 156-chances to run each year........missing a few is not a biggie.....
...........(however, if there is a Presidental Election between runs, ya may want to ramp it up a notch)........
.........Run Easy.........
...............and enjoy the work-out.........

Tom - yes I think this should be good starting with someone new... even though I loved the old pulmonologist. They are doing another PFT test on 11/6, a chest xray & first appt on 11/27. So at least we'll see if there's any differences from a year or so ago.

Oh & it seems I might have the start of a cold.. that would explain why I'm having trouble too.. will go out again tomorrow & see what happens.. I passed a walker I've seen a few times, he told me they're expecting sleet/ice in the beginning of November. Boy I didn't need to hear that!!!!! Oh well, just taking it as it comes.

First - sometimes I don't really feel like running, but if I go out for a walk - after a few minutes, I feel like running. Why don't you give it a try?

RIN///........easy there.....(i seem to be saying that a lot lately)....
...........this is the place that KNOWS how to handle sleet and ice........they should have the roads in good shape to handle it......
........see if your LandsEnd has a fleece lined Squall Jacket or Parka........add a wrap-around scarf and it's actually pretty warm........the other trick, of course, is to watch your footing....when I can't see dry road, I go for the snow covered part of the road (I'm also in my Trail Boots at this point)........since I have Runners Asthma (from that 16-degree run that gave me pneumonia......my own fault), as long as I'm breathing Warm Air I'm ok in the cold stuff,,,,
..................,I have 4-JC Penny Hoods (no jacket, just the hood........I dunno, they just sell them that way)......pulled over the nose and mouth, they go down the neck and heat up from your body heat.....very comfy for winter running.....
......it the cold stuff hits, try a few Experimental Short Runs til you feel like you have the right combination........
........think of it as an Arctic Adventure..........and get back to the house if it isn't comfortable........
........actually, the doc may have some suggestion on that too, but always cover your face in cold weather.....

Got 2.5 scheduled for today. Did 2 yesterday...nothing spectacular...did see a shooting star though! that was cool!
After this, it's rest and carb loading before the race. (ok I know I don't need to carb load before a 5k, but it gives me a good excuse to eat everything! )

Shell - you're funny!!! good luck & have fun on the 5K!

Tom - thanks for the info. went out today & it was even worse than yesterdays... only could do 1 1/2 loops of walking .. had to walk to ILs house where DH was working.. he drove me home. I just couldn't walk up the hill home... . kinda seems amazing was running up that a couple of weeks ago. Wondering if I'm congested, don't feel like it, but sometimes it hits before I feel it. Now I'm thinking I'll have to do little mini workouts on the TM til I'm better... so sad...

Linda...sorry for the crappy run...if it makes you feel better...I had a crappy run too...I battled the ENTIRE TIME! for 2.5 miles. I'm looking forward to the rest days before my race! But I guess we all have bad days and we just have to accept them as part of trip we signed up for when we decided to become runners!

thank you, thank you, thank you! I did it! I ran for about 20 minutes, 10 shorter than I used to...but I got out there before I could talk myself out of it! We are supposed to have a major winter storm tonight, so I'm glad I got it in. It was hard, can't believe two weeks off can make that much difference.

Anyone run on a treadmill? Our gym membership starts next week!

RIN//........hey, it happens........don't let it get you down, maybe it's a cold coming on or over-training (you've been hitting it pretty hard lately).........take a break, see what the new doc has to say, shoot for next week........
.......I'm betting you'll be chomping at the bit in 72-hours.......
................Rest and Heal..........
SHELL///........hey, Carb Loading is probably a State Law......load up.......
FIRST///.......very nice running........now, remember that Plan-B we talked about.......
................ok guys.........a dissapointing day, some Carb Chomping, and a Run before the Storm....
.....................hang in there, it's winter and we're in for some set-backs.......how we handle them is what makes the difference//////
........so start easy
..........stop if it hurts and walk it off
...........go soak in a hot bath
.............(and something about a Hat)
.....................enjoy the work-out......(RIN gets a Pass for 72-hours R&R).........
