When my husband or I are really dragging, or if one wants to speed the pace, we exchange lines from an Outkast song: "Feelin' good, feelin' great, feelin' fine, how 'bout you?" When I'm working on a goal or reach one, it's: "I'm a badass, I'm a badass, I'm a badass, I'm a badass..."

I read somewhere once that the human body is the perfectly designed running machine. A little brainwashing to myself seems to help when I'm running out of gas.

When I feel tired during a run I start saying to myself:"You are a strong woman. Look how strong you are. You go girl. It's amazing how far you can go. " Then actually I frequently start saying thank you to God for giving me the ability to run. This usually makes me think geez what am I complaining about there are alot of people who can only dream of running and i'm lucky enough to be able to.

I do all my training with the thought of "This will come in handy in the last mile of a marathon when 1. I am still passing people, and 2. I can smile as I rip through a 6 minute 26th mile!"

My main thoughts when things start getting tough or I start losing focus:"The training starts right here, right now." and "This is why I started my run today." ------------------ User Profile

I also think about the large number of terminally ill children that I've recently been reading about on the Caringbridge website (http://www.caringbridge.com), and I think, "Run for _________," "run for _________," "________ is fighting for her life - run, run for her! Every breath you exhale is a fresh breath of life for that baby." On the lighter side, I tell myself, "PUSH IT! MOVE IT!" or "You can do it!!"

these are great...For me, it's the next race. At this moment, I'm chanting: "L.A...L___A!","L.A....L___A!!!" - for the LA Marathon The next one will be, unless one comes earlier: "Mud run...mud____run." - for the Camp Pendleton Mud Run :jb

This made me laugh out loud! It's great and so true! You really are your toughest competitor. I'm new to running as well and don't really have a mantra except for something like 'okay just run to the next telephone pole...or the top of that hill...or stop sign...or corner...you get my meaning. Sometimes if I'm having a really tough time and that's not working, I get a little nasty - 'Move your lazy f**king ass! Keep moving! You can do this! Move it, move it, move it!' Usually that helps. When I get angry at myself, I get stubborn - that's how I just finished my first marathon after falling a mile into it and hurting myself. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it! I came across this saying - "Pain feels so much better than regret" - and it's so true! That's what got me through the marathon. ------------------ ~ Kim RoadRunner1972@comcast.ent

Interesting. I often say that or a form of it, "Everything has to end," etc. I didn't know that was a SEAL saying. I often wished I'd gone into the SEALS as a yute.

On the runs where I know I can do it but I feel like I can't "I don't run with my lungs. I don't run with my legs. I run with my will."In races: "Have to keep on smiling, if I stop smiling they will know how much effort this is taking!" BTW every single race picture of me... sure enough SMILING! T

From various ramblings in my head:It's not a hill, it's a speedbump. And when I'm back behind everyone else, I tell anyone who'll listen that I'm not really this slow, I'm just here to pick up any injured runners. Lose the form, lose the speed. Relaxxxxxxxxx.

"Quit? You know, once I was thinking of quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit."-Lance Armstrong in Dodge Ball Classic quote from a classic movie. How could this not motivate you to keep going.

Nothing I'm really aware of, but in the back of my mind it's "come on... come on.... come on... come on... " or (on rough days) "you're fine... you're fine.. you're fine...". Not very clever but it works.
