I don't yet have a mantra, but on days where I feel like quitting, I recall something I pulled out of a fortune cookie some 10+ years ago. It read: "People do not lack strength, they lack will." Anyway, when I feel I'm at my breaking point, I just think of that and it gives me the little extra added push to continue on. BTW - I think the author of that quote is anonymous. ------------------

When I'm thinking about that hill in front of me or the weight of my legs or the soreness in my back, I think to myself, "get out of your head and go somewhere else". It also helps that I once I make it to the crest of that hill, I get to look at the Flatirons and the peaks of the Rocky Mountains spread out in front of me, cheering me on. Who needs a mantra then? Then I feel like I could do anything! I also remind myself that at 32 I am stronger (in so many different ways) than I was at 16. Aren't we runners the lucky and the blessed!------------------ Happy Running!

My kid just gave me the best mantra this weekend. "HARD PRIZE!!! WE'RE ON OUR WAY!!" Given the context of the huge hill I was on pushing the 33 lb kid in the (albeit alumimum frame) stroller, I thought it was perfect. I had been focusing in on the skinny fit person at the end, but "Hard Prize" just sums everything up so well for me. This stuff is hard now but there is a prize at the end (the skinny fit person). Thanks Kid!

Since Finding Nemo came out, I've started to think about Dory (Ellen Degeneres) and her "Just keep swimming" song. No matter how bad the situation was, she just cheerfully went about her business. That's how I want to run. Amy

The one I tell myself a lot is this:Nothing in life was ever worth it unless it took hard work to get there. I have that written on a piece of paper above my bed, so that every morning I see it first thing. I also have a heart condition, so it's important to me to keep going for the sake of my health. I just remember that there are a lot of things I want to do in my life, and I need as much advantage as I can.

But b|tching doesn't do it for me. I get more than enough of that from the people around me. Running is the All Me Show starring Me I absolutely love this and it echoes my mantra which, besides, 'forget the pain, it will pass' (I think) and it usually does after the first mile, goes like this: If evrything fell apart tommorrow: you lost your job, your husband went awol and the bank took your house, you could still run 4 miles without stopping! That's pretty damn impressive! Also, i have a stressed out job so every morning I just think, finish those four miles and nothing can touch you for the rest of the day. OK! It usually works.

I use the "Just Keep Running" ala Dory from Finding Nemo that someone mentioned above. But my favorites are: "Light and quick" - when going up a hill "Not dead yet. Not dead yet" - usually when I'm feeling pretty close to dead "How tough are you? How tough are you? How tough are you? Pretty f*cking tough!" - No idea how I ended up with this one, but it works! -Laura

i'm not running away from (...) i'm not running away from (...)where ... is whatever is on my mind, whatever has been bothering me, work, family, etc. i'm running toward (health) i'm running toward (strength) i'm running toward (confidence) etc. and i usually visualize myself turning back into a kid again. when i was naturally slender and deer-like - long hair, used to run just to feel the wind in my hair. i run to be that again.

Oh I'm glad this thread turned up again, because I've been meaning to post! The "What are you gonnna do? Take a nap on someone's lawn or finish your run?!" served me well last Saturday during my 5K. I was a huffin' and a puffin' in the hot sun (going much faster, I think, that my usual pace) and thought about slowing to a walk for a minute. That mantra popped in my head, I smiled, and I kept pluggin' along!

"Could be worse..."I just keep thinking that while I'm running. I think of all my fellow Marines that have it alot worse than me.

These are cool. I, too, end up with Finding Nemo's "Just Keep Swimming." My trainer from a few years ago taught me my mantra in all things difficult: "Stop having an opinion about it and just do the work." Things are harder when you think about them and stress over them. So when finding myself slipping into "oh my gosh there's so many more miles ahead of me" then I tell myself: "NO OPINION. JUST GO." That and being sure I go 1/2 way out (say today's 4 miles straight out) and then I'm stuck with that last 4 back no matter what. And as someone said already: "if you walk, it'll just be that much longer before you get home." A few stolen from here and other sites and reading materials: "I am striving to be my own hero." "Argue your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours." -Richard Bach I am never down. I am either up, or getting up. My favorite: "Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." ~ Aristotle

I tried this one when my running club took me up a nasty hill (I am from Lincolnshire in the UK originally and it is FLAT). What dya know....it works. I don't think my fellow runners were amused by my language though .

I am afflicted with Internal Jukebox Syndrome (IJS). I cannot run without some random song propelling me along. I can't tell you about the selection... it's too appalling.

I also do a lot of that....just make it to the next bend....or the next tree, or up the hill, etc. But, mainly for me, it's the music. I MUST have my music and that gets me through. I am also rewarding myself with an IPOD when I graduate from CT5K, so I am also thinking about that when I run. Jane

i say to myself, "if you want to get in shape, this is the way to get there...if you stop, you'll stay fat"..that keeps me moving ... i also start chanting..."you can do this, don't give up, you can do this..." thank goodness it's only my husband who hears me on the TM..because i talk myself through it when i get towards the end... and the 1.2.3.4.5 up to 20....the other poster said..oh big time..i go 1.2.1.2.1.2.1.2.... ..and this last run i was studying the bones and muscles of the head and face to help pass time...(kill 2 birds with one stone)
