The ones I use the most.1- Livestrong (Thanks Lance) 2- Pain is weakness leaving the body 3- "You aint so bad" Rocky to Clubber Lang What a great sport... EJW www.teamseam.com

I have two favorites I rely on frequently:"Pain is temporary, Pride is forever" and "Loser's Quit, Winner's Train " [This message has been edited by Rawhide (edited Sep-14-2004).]

Totally. I've found that screaming positive thoughts in my head about how fast/strong/tough I am and what a perfect machine my body is is far more effective than anything else.

These thoughts usually go through my head on a run: -Ow, Ow, Ow, this hurts -Ok, next mailbox -You can make it -Oh shut up, this is really sucking -Wow, this feels pretty good -Oh, good song -What do I want for dinner tonight?

I went to a military college (Virginia Military Institute) and we had a chant we would use: "Never Say Die!" I use that in the final stages of races when I'm tired. One step for each word and then finish my exhale phase with a short hard exhale on the fourth step and then do it again. And again. And again. Most of the time I manage to keep it in my head, but I have caught myself in several races doing it out loud. If I'm not doing that in my head, I'm telling myself that I've only got x miles to go and I KNOW that I can do x miles, so all I have to worry about is enduring the time until I'm done. Also, I've stolen from Lance: Live Strong and Live Large
------------------ "...force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone, and so hold on when there is nothing in you except the will which says to them hold on..."- (Kipling) The essence of running

Paraphrased from a runner's quote thread awhile ago:"What are you gonna do? Are you gonna stop and take a nap in someone's yard?!? Or are you gonna finish your run?" That and: "It doesn't hurt. You're not tired. Just think of something else. Anything. What's for breakfast, lunch, dinner... whatcha doing today, tomorrow, tonite ... distract, distract, distract. Just think of something else." and "You've been more tired/dead-legged than this and lived"

it's usually the "just get to the next corner, the next bush, the next tree, the next bend in the road, the next powerpole, the next fence...."but when things get tough i pull out the good stuff. after trash talking me through a hill my running group trainer told me about pain vs injury. pain vs injury ... is it injury or is it pain? if its' just pain - keep going!! She also told me that I've got that "fire" inside to go on ... sometimes I wonder where the fire is ... but I know if other people can see it, it's there & I am capable of doing anything I set my mind to. So when the running gets tough I just think that I've got the fire. and a couple things I started telling myself after a nasty breakup with my ex who told me I couldn't/wasn't strong enough ... I AM strong enough, I CAN do this. Failure is NOT an option! all together - my little sayings help keep that fire burning and get me thru the tough moments! maggie
