That's what's been working of late.

I just visualize myself crossing the finish line in first place.
I think of how far I've come since I first began, and just say to myself.."Keep going........"

I LOVE this one. I am new to this site and fairly new to distance running. I think that all the threads here are great and will be telling all my friends that are runners about it! I am training to do my second HM and will definitely be using a lot of these postings to get myself through.

This is great for those of us who don't have those "runners bodies" but love the sport anyway!

Ok, I promise, the last post here for today. I am a fan of the Dave Mathews Band and this is a quote from one of their songs:

"...no matter how fast we are running, somehow we keep, somehow we keep up with eachother...."

I am running with two girls from my class who are a little more in shape than I am and it helps me to know that no matter how much faster they are than me I will still finish!

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." A la "Finding Nemo", although I'm not really swimming, it's a good motivator.

I have long days as an at-home mom with 3 kids under the age of 3, so when I get out I just feel FREE. No one to take care of but ME! I use lyrics from a song:

I don't wanna be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately
All I have to is think of me and I have peace of mind
I'm tired of looking around rooms and wondering what I'm supposed to do AND WHO I'M SUPPOSED TO BE
I don't wanna be anything other than ME!

(I'm a little burned out from my 2.5yo twins!)

"to run relaxed is to run strong" I say it over and over. Relaxed lower legs help me. Relaxed shoulders preserve precious energy. Everybody knows it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Why waste the muscle energy?

"If you can be in labor for 28 hours....you can run for 3 more minutes!"

This helped me a lot when I was doing the C25k.

I've used the keep swimming keep swimming from Nemo too.
I don't know if anyone remembers the cheesy Christmas specials but one had a song where "you put one foot in front of the other and pretty soon you will be walking out the door"
Used that one at my last race...worked pretty good too.

Some of these mantras are really inspirational! Mine's pretty simple but it works for me:
I've done it before - I can do it again. I've done it before - I can do it again. I've done it before - I can do it again.

I say so many different things, I really don't have one mantra, I'm constantly coming up with something to push me a few more minutes, and another few minutes, and another few minutes.....

Don't wuss out, you can do it, just keep going, thats 4 more miles to log in.

I want to run a 5k, I want to run a 5k, I want to run a 5k.

Make it to the next commercial break, that wasn't bad, make it to the next commercial break, keep going.

Make it to the next song, just another 4 or 5 minutes, just one more song.

COME ON YOU LAZY SACK OF .....!

I only need to yell at myself one time, during one workout per week, usually on the final speed interval of the workout. The rest of the time I'm much kinder and gentler to myself.

When faced with hills, my old boot camp (the workout, not the armed services) instructor would say, "There's now way out of this valley but up." I think that to myself when I run hills now.

I have a tendency to count things. Like the lines in the side walk, crack on the road, the number of cars passing by, stuff like that. When I really need an extra boost to the finish line I start counting down from 240 (4 minutes) and the half mile to go point.

I am a new runner and the only thing that keeps me going sometimes are the following quotes that I replay in my head over and over and over again while struggling on a run:

"Seriously, Kelly. It is 30 minutes of your life. Get over yourself and finish strong." Hopefully this will be up to 45 minutes soon enough!

"They are starring at you. Run faster so they can't see your thighs jiggle anymore."

"A hill? F*ck it, let's give it a shot!"

I love this topic. I'll be trying out of few that I've read.

Let's see....

Hot, hot, hot (like running on hot coals)

Pick 'em up, put it down, pick 'em up.......

From some new country song-all you're gonna see is &&$es and elbows.
