I actually tried the rosary on my last long run too (raised Catholic). Hail Marys make a good cadence but Glory Bes and Our Fathers are tricky. Lol. I recited some other prayers too. I ran out of prayers, though and resorted to counting 1,2,3....up to 100, 200, 300 switch the water bottle to the other hand and so on.

I have a new mantra. The other day in the kitchen my 5 year old son walked past me, stopped, looked at me and said "Nice belly you got goin there". When I get tired running, I think about him and kick it in.

When my running begins to get tough, I'm a counter 1-2-3-4 over and over again. Recently the Cars song "Let the good times roll" has been on my mind. It isn't as boring as the 1-2-3-4.

Since I share one thing in common with Lance Armstrong-we are both cancer survivors-my mantra is, If Lance can do it, so can I!I do realize that I am not a world class athlete, I am just a breast cancer survivor trying to run-(ok barely jog) the Susan Komen Race for the Cure after being force to watch for 2 years in a row.

The last one I hears was from a comentator at the NYC Run Hit Wonder. The guy says when you feel like qiutting just put this mantra in your head "FEET FAST, LEGS STRONG, I CAN DO THIS ALL DAY LONG" (repeat) Believe it or not, it got me to the finish line fairley easily!

I sing in my head, in my best Dory (Finding Nemo) voice: Just keep running... Just keep running... Just keep running... I do that exact same song. Oh Dory, how you have inspired me to finish many a run! I also think is it really that bad? WHat is really hurting and is it REALLY that bad. ------------------ "It hurts up to a point and then it doesn't get any worse." - Ann Trason

Since I first started running when the going would get tough I would say to myself "You want to be a runner? Then be a runner." I still say that over and over when I want to quit and it works for me.

When I'm within 2 miles I tell myself "its been a long time since I couldn't run 2 miles, 2 simple miles then you can quit"My other one is more of a conversation that I have with myself at least once a week while running. "god loves quitters, but god loves everone, if I quit I will be so angry at myself that it'll just be alot easier for everyone involved if I just run up this hill, around that corner and then pretty soon it'll just be two more miles to go......." ------------------ what are you going to do? Sleep on the street? Or finish your run? -stolen from paul-

I say to myself: "I can run the next 3 minutes (or the next .25 mile)." Then, after I have run this, I repeat the mantra, until I've run a full 30 minutes, or an overall target time. This is how I got motivated to get through the C25K. I'm on Week 9, Workout 1!

This is one I use when I am getting stressed out over a race or actually anything else in life. It comes from the movie 'Meatballs" (Bill Murray) " IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!, IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!" Maybe that strikes you as a little unusual (a lot of us take our running very seriously here) I think I spend too much time worrying about a lot of things in life that if ,you think about them, really aren't important or you can't do anything about.
So next time you're worried about the weather the day of a race, or who will show up in your age group, or whatever, remember IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER! A lot of times it relaxes me and I do much better than I probably would have if I had let myself be all stressed out ------------------ Me

I so heart this thread. Some of you are too funny. I'm definitely stealing the "I'm running away from my ass" line that someone mentioned upthread. The mantra "Never give up, never surrender" from Galaxy Quest works for me since I'm still needing major encouragement. "Live strong" from Lance Armstrong is also great inspiration. And finally, "I want to be a success story too". Kind of cheesy, but hey whatever works right?

Love this thread... mostly, I've got IJS ( Internal jukebox Syndrome) also, and while most of mine are songs I would desperately like to forget ( i.e., 'Push it' - Salt -N- Pepa )Also, sometimes I start repeating my 2 year old's favorite books... ( also where I got my nick from) "Left Foot, Right Foot, Left Foot, Right ... Feet in the day, Feet in the night " and" In the house and on the street, how many different feet you meet" - from Dr. Seuss Left Foot, Right Foot

If he/she can do it I can do it, just go. And visualizing the finish of my first 5k - yes I'm new here. I've done a lot of things I didn't think I could do and this will be another. I used to ride my bike on the trails 50 miles in a day before my daughter. I'm a late bloomer had my first child at 43 going to run my first 5k at 45. I hope to compete in a duathalon next summer. If he can do it I can do it just go If he can do it I can do it just go. Christy
