A new one I used today..."Don't Slow, don't slow, don't slow." during repeat miles of course. I think it might have worked.

I USE THIS SAME QUOTE WHN I AM RUNNING...I START MY WARM UP WALK WITH PRAYER...THEN WHEN I RUNNING & I FEEL MY LEGS BURNING I START MY MANTRA & IT WORKS EVERYTIME

i sing the oompa loompa song. it works amazingly well. http://youtube.com/watch?v=spKeBgEub6s i also set benchmarks when i run, like the tree in front of me, the car, or something like that. and when i reach that goal, repeat. i tell myself "i can do it, i can finish this". i also count my steps in sets of 10. haha that's about it. OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPA DEEDOO!

Um, Oompa Loompa's are not exceedingly fast, my friend.Their fashion sense certainly leaves a lot to be desired, as well. ------------------ Life is Short ... Make Fun of It. 400 Beers

i sing oompa loompa really fast. of course i won't sing it slow or the purpose is defeated. the song is really long so it helps me concentrate. their fashion sense is kinda horrible, but that has nothing to do with the catchy song

I've been told to repeat how much I love running while I run but that doesn't work... because usually when I'm going up a hill and need motivation...I really don't love running so it morphed into..."I HATE THIS... I HATE THIS.." until the hill is over. Occasionally it will be "I think I can I think I can..." During one triathlon when I was wearing a yellow shirt, people kept calling me Lance Armstrong... so during the run I just kept saying "wear yellow, live strong" it developed into a rhythm and kept my feet going... whatever works!!!

I actually have recently adopted a new mantra/quote that I repeat myself when I feel like quitting...it's from a Runner's World columnist's book I just finished (Running for Mortals)."The miracle is not that I finished, the miracle is that I had the courage to start." My feeling on that is, if I accomplished the miracle of starting, why stop????

This may be silly and it is not really a Mantra (or even rhythmic for that matter), but I start looping "Eye of the Tiger". I refrain from throwing air punches however.

I always tell myself "relax your legs and just keep turning them over"."It's ONLY a 5k, It's ONLY a 10k, it's ONLY, a half marathon...once I got to marathon I had to revert back to "relax your legs and just keep turning them over". ------------------ My Profile

When I'm short on oxygen not much goes through my head that makes any sense. Half the time I've got an annoying catchy song stuck in my head."Oodley oodley oodley oodley oodley oodley fun fun fun!" If people could read minds, someone would have killed me on the trail a long time ago.

"I can do this, 'cause I kick ass. I can do this, 'cause I kick ass."A bit presumptuous, maybe, but it's gotten me through some long runs. And I.. uh, think it in rhythm with my steps. It works!

During long runs: "There's no pity in Edge City", which I shorten to "No pity/edge city" to follow the rhythm of my steps. On steep hills: assorted profanity, as bad as I can think up. I don't normally curse, so this change in mental state seems to help get me over the top.

Lately during my long runs I've been thinking of the Robert Frost poem that goes "miles to go before I sleep." So that's become one of my mantras during the early-mid point of a long run/race. It focuses me on the fact that for the next "X" hours, my job is to run, and don't obsess about the mileage. It's also become part of my profile signature! ------------------ The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. --Robert Frost

UR2B,In an ultra, my mantra is usually "not far to the next aid station" - because that's all the farther I let myself look ahead... kestrou
