C'mon guys & gals, join the treadmill marathon club this winter instead of lamenting how it's too cold to do your long runs outside. I'll be doing my "treadmill marathon" sometime in December. Who wants to join me? Don't all crowd together now..for a line please..

I ran about 25 on the tm while training for a marathon. It is not that bad if you have a tv and/or music, but I don't think that I will do it again in the near future. Good luck.

Well, I would be in, except that the university gym limits us to 45 minutes. Sorry! But I am planning to run an indoor ultra in March. Does that count? ------------------ Mark My User Profile

Probably. What's the date? Is it still winter? How far and you're doing it on a treadmill, not an indoor track right?

I do 10 mile runs on an indoor track - 17 laps to a mile. When the roads get bad I'm gonna be up there for 18 miles.

17 laps to a mile?? 200m is 1/8 of a mile. Don't you get dizzy running around in small circles? Or have I miscalculated? O^O

I am on the DL right now but, would have loved to run a marathon on the treadmill this month. (This is the first month we haven't run a marathon since August). Mark, you get 45 minutes?! Our rec. center only allows 30 minutes. I got 10 miles once because I kept getting off the machine and re-signing up since no one was waiting for the TM on which I was running.

I'm one of those 50 State Marathoners. (I've run 49 states - 53 marathons.) I'm always up for a challenge. Once I did an 18-miler long run on my gym tread mill. How does this work? Bally's does have a 30 minute limit on TM but I know the off times and that is when I us it. When and how does this take place? I'm also running the Goofy Challenge in Jan 2006 (Disney). This would be good training for me. Annie In Georgia

Sounds too crazy...count me in! Of course I'll be expecting a cool medal and finisher's T. I can provide my own pasta party. Just need a couple or three good movies to plug into the VCR. I missed out on all my marathons this year - hamstrung.

I usely over run each run because I start to think "hey haven't i ran lap 83 before?" I count backwards because I get bored counting forward. Tommorrow I'm going for 16 miles - that's a big 272 laps.

I could've sworn I posted yesterday..where did my reply go? Anyway, in lieu of a t-shirt or medal, the prize for completing this challenge is the strange looks you get from ppl when you tell them ran 26.2 miles non-stop on a treadmill. Priceless You can do this anytime, before the winter is over. I'm doing mine this month. I haven't decided on a date yet. It may be in the evening after work on a weekday. Just let us know here in this thread when you've comple1BB ted it so we can start giving you strange looks already. As an added bonus, every time one of those threads comes up entitled "what's the longest you've run non-stop on a treadmill?" you get to relive your experience all over again, and hopefully get more strange looks.

How late in the year do you still consider it winter? I'm in North Dakota so I mean we can be having winter in June.

I was just thinking about this topic this weekend. If I had my own treadmill at home, I'd love to try this someday. The longest I've gone on a machine at the gym is 20K.

I think I'd be up for this, too. Seems like if we did it all on the same date, or at least the same week, that'd be even cooler. I don't know about doing this in December, though, unless it is right after Christmas. Otherwise, I guess I could try it in January.Melissa

You should try to run it non-stop. Have enough water bottles & gels within reach so you don't have to refill. However, if you need to take a potty break or two you won't be disqualified, but be forewarned that if you are doing this in a gym, someone else might jump on your treadmill, thus forcing a disqualification. So there really is incentive not to stray away for too long. Also if your treadmill has a cutoff time (like mine - 60 minutes) and you have to reset it periodically, no penalty. No penalties for fire-drills, brief power outages or anything else out of your control, as long as you get right back on. But if the gym closes and they kick you out at mile 20 sorry you are sol--you can't resume in the morning. However there is no cut-off time..if you are crazy enough to walk or crawl 26.2 miles on a treadmill, you still get credit, as long as you do it all in one session. In fact if we were having awards we would have a prize for the slowest.Winter ends with the vernal equinox, around the 20th of March. I could do it the first week in January, but no later than the 8th. Should we set a date in early January? Can't do it on the 1st because I have a 5K that day.

hahahaha. what a sweet, sweet idea. now, to add to that: how about beginning in the wee hours of the morning so that when you finish, you can go have breakfast at some awesome place with pancakes and bagels and and....well i'm not fit enough to run a marathon yet, but doing it on a treadmill is an intruiguing notion...especially cos you can control your exact speed and time....definitely one of the things i must do before i die. best of luck if u do, let us know how u did!

In PA we can run outside, except for a few days in the winter when the snow or ice is thick. Sorry to you guys where it's *really* cold in the winter, but I would rather take a jab in the eye with a sharp stick than run for a long time on the treadmill.------------------ That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run.

Ug, no offense, but I hate the treadmill. I had to use one the other day and stopped after 5 miles because I was bored out of my mind.Good luck, though! It's running no matter where you do it!

I really want to do this! But, I need to either ask permission at the gym or find a friend with a treadmill. I am on the DL now and will be for another week. Do we all have to run it on the same day or can we be on the honor system and run it when we have a spare 4 hours or so? My goal is 3:59. I never get bored. Rats! Okay, yes, I know. That's why I asked if we can run later than January... And, to make matters even worse... while at the card party last night (we play Euchre once a month), I noticed a treadmill in a room near where the coats were kept. I asked the host if it I could borrow their treadmill for few hours... He laughed and said, "Of course!". Anyway, if the md and pt give me the go ahead... I am going ahead with the Treadmill Marathon of 2006.

You know what, a treadmill marathon would be great training for my indoor ultra in March. I'll have to see if the gym will let me do this. If they're ok with me hogging a machine for 4 hours, then I'm in! ------------------ Mark My User Profile

You can run this whenever you want. The deadline for completion is the last day of winter. Some ppl have suggested we all try to do it on the same day or week.. if there is interest in that idea I am up for anytime through the 1st week in January. Has anyone decided on a specific date or week yet???I have an idea for the finishers. For those of you with a treadmill that can go the whole distance (i.e. doesn't have a time limit), take & post a picture of the readout at the end with your time & distance. Btw, for the perfectionists, a marathon is 26 miles, 385 yards, which actually comes out to 26.21875 miles, so your treadmill at the end should read 26.22 not 26.20.
