I'm out. Maybe next winter. (big frown)

No need to read further unless you are curious.

This might be interesting to some of you with calf pain.

I went to the orthopod today and, after thoughtfully listening to my tale of woe, he told me he thought it likely that I have "chronic exertional compartment syndrome".

He drew a picture of this on the paper on the examining table on which I was sitting. It makes sense. He is sending me to a doctor in Richmond to do compartment pressure testing. There, the doctor will insert a small catheter into the area and take resting pressure readings (mmHg). Then I will get on a treadmill and he will take pressure readings during exertion. If the pressure readings go up to a certain level, then the diagnosis is "chronic exertional compartment syndrome". My doctor told me that I actually should want the pressure to go up so that we finally have a diagnosis, otherwise we have to do a bunch of other things. This would be the most efficient diagnosis to get me back to normal.

I am apprehensive only because the cure for this syndrome is surgery. "A couple little nicks cut into that band and the pressure is relieved."

The good thing is the recovery is only 3-4 weeks. The bad news is that I don't know when I can have the pressure tests because that doc is out of town until next week. I hate not knowing for sure.

Thank you for listening.

I'm still pretty much commited, as long as I can find a TM to use. I doubt my gym will let me use the ones there for more than an hour or so. A collegue of mine has a TM at home, so I'll ask her if I can use it sometime soon.

I'm going to tentatively set a date for the last weekend of January. Mind you, this will be a very slow marathon, since I've been doing minimal training recently. I think I'm in good enough shape to crank out a 4:30ish marathon, but I'm definately not setting any firm goal.

rosecoloredglasses, I'm sorry to hear it. But at least it is potentially fixable! Good luck to you, feel better, and heal fast.

As for the treadmill marathon, I'm absolutely in. I've been relegated to TM running for several days a week this winter because I have to run at 4 am while it is still dark, before work. I need something to give me a reason to stay on the @#$& thing. This is fantastic motivation.
Say, are there any other rules I should know? We don't have to adjust the incline or anything, do we?
Let me work out when my date could be. Thanks for posting such a great idea!

I posted some rules on page 1. They're not very strict. No incline necessary, although I've read from different sources that 1% best simulates road running. (I run all my treadmill runs at 1%.) If at all possible, try to take and post a picture of the treadmill readout (26.22 & your time) at the end. If your treadmill is like mine and has a 99-minute time limit this won't be possible (unless you're really really fast!)

Montreal First TM Marathon is a go for January 15, 2006 6:30 am,
participants Grommit and rolyone. RR to follow on Monday.

We should have plenty of witnesses to keep us honest.

Best of luck to you two. I will probably make my 2nd attempt at this either Sunday or Monday.

I am not interested in actually doing this, but enjoyed reading about your goals. There is a man in Minnesota doing this tomorrow in Mankato at a shopping mall, I believe. I heard it on the news last night and found this from newspaper archives online today. I thought you coolrunners, I mean crazyrunners would be interested.

Starr in MN

(AP) Mankato, Minn. Brandon Moen hopes to jog into the record books without really getting anywhere.

Moen wants to beat the time set by a 2004 Olympic trials qualifier for a marathon run on a treadmill. The record time on a treadmill is just under 2 hours and 24 minutes.

Breaking the record would put him at least near a qualifying time for the next Olympics, 2 hours 22 minutes.

The CR TM marathon was a success. I won't bore anyone with the details of the run.

Grommit qualified for Boston yet again with a finishing time of 3:23:41
Myself having completed my first time at the 26.22 mile distance finished in a time of 4:40:00.( kept hitting the stop button accidentally on the handrail several times therefore I can't spit out the time to the second but it's close enough).

Photos of the event will be posted shortly in the Montreal runners forum. ( I will provide a link when they get posted).

Roly hit the stop button accidently a few times.... but I trust his math.

The way I did it was to do 2 x 90 mins and then the balance of the remaining distance...

1st 90 mins = 11.6 miles [as the tm didn't give hundreths it was probably.05 extra]

2nd 90 mins as above [might have been a little longer ... the 6 had been there for quite a while]

last 3 miles took 23:41

Total: 26.2 [plus a bit] 3:23:41

I confess to running to the gents at the first reset ...... but apart from that the experience was complete....

do we have a benchmark?

Congrats to our wonderful Montreal men, Grommit and Roly. Here's a pic for those interested:

Grommit on left, Roly on right. Sorry, this is my best pic of them both ... they were running so fast, I couldn't keep up with them!

After my one failed attempt I ran into some motivation problems, but I ran 20 on the road on Sunday and my new target date is March 19th (last day of winter & last chance possible). I'm actually going to do 6 on the treadmill later today, which will be my 1st treadmill run in almost a month.
