Has anyone decided on a specific date or week yet???

I have an idea for the finishers. For those of you with a treadmill that can go the whole distance (i.e. doesn't have a time limit), take & post a picture of the readout at the end with your time & distance. Btw, for the perfectionists, a marathon is 26 miles, 385 yards, which actually comes out to 26.21875 miles, so your treadmill at the end should read 26.22 not 26.20.

I doubt we'd get many people to participate if it has to be on a specific day or even week. As long as we keep bumping this thread, we'll have a record of everyone's performance being kept up to date, so even if the runs are weeks or months apart we'll still know who's "winning".

I think I'll be looking at doing my run in late January or early February.

I think the longest run I've ever done on a treadmill was 18 miles. I'm not sure I could do a full marathon on one.

I did 22 on a treadmill, and it wasn't too bad. I just sort of zoned out completely, staring at my reflection in the mirrored wall across the gym (call me vain if you will). From time to time, though, the attractive people working out in the rest of the gym caught my attention.

I'm in i'll run a 26.22 miler on treadmill for part of my marathon training for marathon on April 8th. It will be at training pace though not marathon pace. Which will be about 1:30 to 2:00 minutes slower then goal pace in marathon. March 14th is the date i'll run the treadmill marathon.

I think it's doable - I found this training schedule that I believe I can handle. Started week one this morning with a 10 mile run. Longest TM run so far has been 14 mi.

I've always taking a day off between runs so runnning 3 days in a row might be a challenge - just have to find out.

Whoa. I can't do it but I definetely want to hear how this goes. I can't imagine running that far on a treadmill. Great idea. Way to make treadmill running a little less boring.

Very cool.. I think you are the first person to commit to a date.

Fwiw, I did 18 on the treadmill last night, with the last 6 at 7:13 pace. And this after a lunchtime 8-miler on the road. So I am ready, but am not going to set a date yet. I may just decide on any given day that this will be the day. But it will definitely be on or before January 8th.

Also wanted to add that unfortunately our treadmills at the Y limit the time to 99 minutes, so I will have to reset it a couple of times, and won't be able to capture the "26.22" readout at the end. Does anybody have access to a treadmill that allows you to run 26.22 non-stop?

Time for a roll call. I have 3 categories here. Let me know if your status has changed. If you are "committed" please verify, tell us of any preparation you are doing (be it physical, mental, or logistical), and give us an updated time frame for when you will be making your attempt. And if you have a time goal please share that with us as well. Thanks and good luck to all who are participating. Who will be first???

Committed with date (1):

I don't see how I can get it done before the end of winter. I just started an 18 week training program that would have me doing the 26.2 mi on Sunday April 16th (my 52nd birthday).

Best of luck to all that accept the challenge.

date and time of my TM marathon January 15, 2005 6:30 am,

I have another cool runner from Montreal (Grommit) who will be joining me in the TM marathon, running side by side at a local gym. Once we get permission.

WE also have the help of other local cool runners who have offered to volunteer at the imaginary aid stations and ensure we don't cheat.

BTW this will be my first semi official marathon.

An interesting idea - count meinfor the "Showed someinterest despite this being a sick idea" category. I'm considering buying a treadmill for use at home - this may put me over the top.

I did 22 on a TM once - no music, TV, just half of my reflection to stare at (the mirror was off center) and a window to watch 3 feet of snowfall. A little mind-numbing to say the least. In the comfort of my basement with a few movies to watch would be infinitely easier!

I haven't responded as yet but I'll probably participate sometime in Feb. I've done a few 30+ and two 40+ milers on the TM. Boredom is no problem at my house. Water stations get replaced with DVD and Tivo stations.

Ok, I am 0 for 1. Got on the treadmill at 5:30 last night with the intention of doing 26.2 @ 8:13 pace (7.3mph). Stepped off after 20 miles. For one thing, it seemed hotter at the Y last night. But the main reason I stopped was that my HR, which started out in the mid 130's, had crept up to near 160 by the end. I was feeling pretty beat, and to run another 6.2 would have felt like finishing a real marathon at race pace. I don't want to race this, it needs to be a training run. Maybe I should have started out slower, but I did 18 last Monday at 8:06 avg pace and avg'd 140 HR, so I don't think my goal was unrealistic. I think maybe being warmer plus I haven't eaten particularly well over the holiday may have contributed to my failure. Maybe wasn't hydrated enough either. Anyway, I'll give it another go in a week or two.

Edited to add, I use a 1.0% incline for all my treadmill runs. I read in a couple of places that this incline simulates road effort at an equivalent pace.

Imaginary aid stations?! Roly, if they're imaginary, then you're going to get imaginary water and Gatorade. And if you think that's gonna cause trouble, don't even start about the imaginary port-o-lets. Hey, we plan to be real spectators with designated cheering points. Sorry we won't be able to cheer you on for each mile though ... takes time to travel from one spot to the next, ya know!

Grommit's there to pace Roly and make sure he doesn't get left behind ... isn't he great We've got a few others who plan to bandit ... oops! Um, um ... well, they plan to sign up, for real, yeah, um, just closer to the race date ...

Sally

p.s. This is one TM marathon that will have GREAT post-race food!

I'm hoping one of the aid stations will feature topless chicks cheering me on. Of course, I could always pop in certain types of videos if I needed that for motivation.

What if you get lost on the course, or show up late for the start? Is it chip timed? Mile markers posted clearly? Crowded at the start? Where are the photographers - I like to look my best when I run by them. I hope they have space blankets at the finish.

The Y has a 20 min. limit but I have an understanding with the management. I asked them if there 1-2 TM's open could I just keep going.

I've done 20 milers when I timed the off peak periods (5-10 PM) or (8AM - 3 PM). Saturday long runs (10 AM - 5PM or Sundays (1-5 PM) .

I can easily do a marathon at the Y with my window times and they have exceptional, commercial TM's.

My local Y limits the TM's to 20 min. to be fair to others waiting. During the slow times they dont even bat an eye if I go for hours.

Ask them there if there is a way to bypass the time limit.

Ask them there if there is a way to bypass the time limit. What I would do is to do 1 hr. on one TM and then immediately hop over to the next one and vice versa. That's what I do for a very slight change of scenery ((smile)).

I see the orthopod tomorrow to see if I have permission to run. If I get the green light, I will have to train a little bit. My last marathon was 20 November.

When does winter officially end? In other words, when is the last possible day to complete the great Just Running Treadmill marathon: Winter 2006?

March 20th, 2006, is the first day of spring, therefore March 19 will be the last day of winter. Coincidentally, March 19 is a Sunday so if you wait until the last minute at least you'll have the whole weekend.
