I don't, and don't think I'd like to cause I'm distracted easily and would get hit by a car or something. But I like "singing" either out loud or in my head, or humming while I run. I talk to myself too, or make up stories. Anyone else do that? And/or what do you like to listen to when you run? why?

When I am home for breaks I run with music, I live in a fairly safe neighborhood, not that anything bad couldnt happen, I just think I will be safe listening to music. Then when I am at school whether I run with the team or alone I don't listen to music.

When I do listen to music I usualy have metal or some from of hard rock. I like the fast beats and double bass so it is easy to listen to. I dont really have any reason but I just like to listen to music.

Use the little hook-over kind. Or, if you have the little kind that go in your ear (and you don't mind looking peculiar) tape 'em in. I recommend painter's tape, because it stays on good and doesn't hurt to take off. I did it once, but it was just for fun. It was a two miler, so I don't really know how it stands up to longer stuff.

I love running to music, whether it's in headphones or in my head. It helps regulate my breathing, and keeps my mind off my muscles.

You know, it's funny to me how arrogant some people can be when it comes to NOT listening to music when they run. I met a guy just the other day who said "no serious runners listen to music when running."

Whatever. I'll keep listening... Oh, and I'm faster than him too...

I've heard that line too about "no serious runner" and music and I say, WHO CARES? I love it. Running, spinning, even walking and working outside. There are TONS of good playlists and a couple of most excellent Podrunner mixes for FREE download at www.fitpod.com. Go get 'em and nevermind the naysayers, I says.

If running very hard I think music throws you off... But if you're doing Long Slow Distance trying to raise your mpw then I guess its a pretty good idea.

i almost always run with music but the last couple races i ran, either my batteries died half way through(cd player) or one my daughter lent me her ipod but i couldn't figure it out(tough being outdated!)it wasn't the end if the world and i ran surprising well.i've always said my fast music was my motivation to run fast.i find it amusing that people don't think you're a serious runner running with music.i totally enjoy it and it isn't so loud that i worry about safety issues.i figure whatever works for you!

I would, but I have the same problem as TweetyPie. Stupid little headphones. I will sing outloud every once in awhile. My friends and I sing outloud together sometimes and that's pretty fun. But if I'm doing a really hard run, I usually just focus on running. I usually listen to music while I'm pole vaulting in track season though.

Anyone listen to Nine Inch Nails? Perfect running music. Although I find Guns 'n' Roses makes me pick up pace.
I have only just discovered running to music and it's helping me since i have only just started after a two year lapse from serious training.
I don't have any sports headphones so i just make a loop around my ear, that keeps them in place.
The so called purists that condone running to music have forgotten that it's supposed to be an enjoyable experience, I like to run yeah but when combined with music I feel totally free and alive.
And there is nothing like singing out loud to a song when you are pushing yourself up a steep hill, it just gives me that extra little push.

I've never listened to music while running. I imagine it would really motivate me and keep me distracted from staring at my watch. Anyways, I have the problem that a few people have. I cant get the headphones to stay in. I guess i'll be going to RadioShack this weekend and seeing what they have available. Great topic, btw.

Does anyone listen to Metallica when running? I think they're good for a sort of background listening, because the music is easy to follow, pretty constant, and the songs are really long a lot of the time. NIN IS good to listen to while running-I just tried it-thx for the suggestion. ( )

Jeff, you sound like you enjoy rock (nice!) and if you want some longer songs to listen to while running check out Avenged Sevenfold's new cd. I don't know if you're into them or not but...the music is usually really high energy and the songs range anywhere from 5-9 minutes long.

Or course I listen to Metallica, got to admit though, don't know much of their music, any suggestions. I'm going to a rock festival this weekend (leaving tomorrow) and they are going to be there. I heard the mosh pits get pretty brutal there so I have been warned to stay away. I've never been to a gig before and here I am going to Britains biggest rock festival lol. Plus that Avenge sevenfold are going to be there.Five days without running, how will I cope? Although I heard that being ina moshpit will give me plenty of exercise. Wish me luck -_-
Try Korn - freak on a leash the nine inch nails remix, currently set to my ring tone too. An amazing song.

Hey foxey, about the mosh pits, it depends on where you're from. I've been told Colorado mosh pits are too violent for most, but they don't seem too bad... depending on where you go. Just stay away from knives and the more vicious fistfights if you can. I like ones where you can go in swinging in general, but when people are looking to beat the crap out of one person at a time, it's too much for me. Are you more into heavy metal/rock/punk music? I used to be more into punk, but aside from a lot of my favorite bands going emo/gothic (can anyone say Greenday?) I don't have as much a preference anymore. I also don't listen to near as much as I'd like, because I'm not allowed any secular music, so I just listen to what I can download (used to be a lot-not anymore) or can get off of friends... and so my moshing experience is also limited. I've only been to pits in CO. And yeah, mosh pits are pretty good excercise, never thought of that before.

Haha. Well considering you get to see Metallica and A7X I don't think it'll be too hard to cope. That's awesome that you're going to that show.

Oh here's another song I like for running...Marilyn Manson's "This Is The New Sh-t". Normally I'm not too crazy about him but especially the chorus I like when I run.

Also Disturbed is sweet running music. And I probably already mentioned them but Linkin Park as well. I also love Eminem's "Till I Collapse". That's one of my essential race day songs lol.
