Does anyone know what are good mile times for male runners ages 12, 13, and 14 (pre-growth spurt)? My younger brother can run a 5:59 without training. It seems like he has potential but I am unsure.

Without training? I know a guy that could run a 54 sec. 400 in grade 8, and would like to know why life sucks.

FredWhat did you mean by what you wrote? I think the original poster was trying to encourage his younger brother to run and was looking for predictions of how good the kid could be based on the fact that he ran 5:59 in a PE class or something without any formal coaching. To answer the question: Any time a kid can run under 7 min for a mile as a 12 year old, I'd say he has a chance to be a really solid runner. My best mile as a 7th grader was 7:10 (sans traning, in a PE class). I eventually ran a 4:26.

What I mean coach, is to see that ability not given the correct respect and workload brings a sadness in someone who has always pushed the possibilities. Of course it is easy to overwhelm the capabilities of that young person, but where I live the desirable workload is sadly lacking.

Thanks guys. I would love this to develop into a real talent for him. He has a passion for running at his age now so I think that is a great start. I'll sit him down and make him watch Without Limits. That should do it

the absolute fastest I can run 1 mile is 4 minutes and 39 seconds because my heart rate goes to around 210. Average would be about 6 minutes because I don't have patience so I would rather do it faster and get it done with.
