If you hit something hard enough to deform your rear rim, it will hop up and down and you can feel the bulge in the metal with your fingers. If it wobbles enough to be a bother, it is shot. If it wobbles side to side, it can often be fixed through spoke adjustment.

A wheel "set" indicates two wheels, you sound like you just need a new rear wheel, which is a common situation, so just buy a new rear wheel if you ned one, maybe 200 bucks.

Avoid this next time by keeping the tires inflated every ride and steer around or bunnyhop holes in the road.

I inflate every time...I'm a good PUMPER

I think I tore my bike up at Bike Ride Across GA! There was LOTS of not fun things to avoid...including 4000 RR tracks and surprise potholes.

To be honest, I had no clue. It doesn't seem to be a wobbler...

It's a bump. I'll try to "feel" it on tomorrow's ride...

If I were to get a new rear wheel I'll have to call my original bike dealer...the LBS doesn't carry my "brand"

I doubt it was caused by a nail if the rim is actually damaged. Nobody has a "brand" of wheel, just get a sturdy wheel from off the shelf, if they won't just sell you a back wheel then go to a real bike shop. I have had very good luck with the Roval Pave for training, the Mavic classics are decent, get something with round spokes, the more spokes the better. Just get a sturdy wheel, I don't like to train on aero section wheels as they require special tubes and that's annoying.

any specialized dealer should have the rovals:

http://spindoctorcyclewerks.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=1181

If you have to mailorder a new one, go to Colorado Cyclist and buy a mavic box section rim, 32 spoke 3 cross. straight guage spoke, (dt brand spokes) with dura ace hub and have them throw a rimstrip and rear cogset on the thing, they make nice wheels.

Well, if you want to them to match, you could keep the wheel with the HOP and mail order a SKIP and a JUMP so you have the full set.

Those wheels are garbage, I wouldn't spend good money buying a matching replacement, either get a better set of sturdy wheels to train on or live with the mismatch, those are light, flexy wheels that will give you nothing but trouble, especially the rear one, just my personal opinion mind you. They can't be fixed for crap when a spoke breaks, there is so much tension on those paired spokes. They look like the Shimano wheels, which is not a good option for you, plus they are pretty expensive. They are a decnet front wheel for racing, though.

Not shimano...I'm too lazy to go to the garage to look what they really are.

My wheels are very hurt that you called them crap.

Find me some decent inexpensive wheels...I'm on a teacher's salary!

JR, I'm sure her "please & thank you" is implied in that request.

After someone calls your wheels crap, you're exempt from the usual please-and-thank-you BS when you order them to find you a better set.

I thought everyone knew that.

Darn, sorry, I didn't know about the Crap Corollary. Thanks for clearing that up, Matt!

Tithers, based on JR's post above, he may be thinking of a Dura Ace Wheelset built with Mavic Open Pro rims (at least they look boxy to me). He suggested Colorado Cyclist, and here's the link to their custom wheel section. (scroll down to the Mavic Open Pro section... there are other Mavic Open Pro options on page 2 (silver rims rims). The rear runs about $193 (w/out cassette), and the front $147. Here are some reviews on the Dura-Ace/Mavic Open Pro Option.

If you're in a real rush, call Colorado Cyclist and read JR's paragraph to them, and they should be able to figure out the options from that. Or if you're in a super-duper rush, call PH. (And tell him "hi" while you're at it... please and thank you. )

If you're not in a real rush, of course wait for JR or someone else to get you the specifics. Another option would be to read that same paragraph to the folks at your LBS.

If I were you, I'd wait for jroden. But I didn't want you losing sleep wondering how much coin you might be dropping.

Since you probably won't be getting two sets of wheels (one to train on and one to race on), you might discuss with CS whether or not an aero rim would be good for your IM. (Though I get jroden's point in going for the box rims.)

Me? No. I always thought the twin spoke wheels were uber-cool. Now I know better.

Just ask your shop for a sturdy rear wheel and have them switch the cassette and tire over, people smash rear wheels all the time and that's why most serious riders you see are training on mismatched wheelsets.

If they don't have a decent wheel with lots of spokes, just order the colorado cyclist rear for a couple hundred and have someone help you swap the cassette, don't forget the rimstrip.

Don't price shop for wheels, you have to buy quality equipment or it will break quickly. I think your present wheels are Xaero brand, no doubt the pride of China, typical of the total crap wheels that come on $1500 bikes these days.

10 years ago, everyone rode on 32 spoke wheels and every part of them could be rebuilt or replaced and if you broke a spoke you could still ride home. The new wheels can't be fixed at all, some progress, eh?

Like I said, I didn't even notice it...the bike peeps did. I guess I'm more open to mismatched wheels, esp. If I'll look like a "Serious" rider.

Ok-so I'm a noob at this wheel thing.

Box rim? Other rim? What's the diff?

1. did they say you had to buy a pair or did you?
2. go mismatch. Seriously. If you are on a budget, or are a hardcore, it's the way to go

Like Jon said, if this shop is "fer real" and not just "pushing gear" then they'll have a pile of good quality, solid, cheap wheels available for you to pick up.

You can take your time, but get it done before IMFL because you want to make sure you are solid before "da race"

You don't want to match the front wheel you own, because it is crap. Your back wheel takes a lot more stress and will always give you more trouble, so get something with more spokes to spread the load around. Those inexpensive, low spoke count wheels are nothing but trouble as the hubs are cheaply made, the flanges crack, the rims crack due to the high spoke tension, the cheap bearings start to wobble and the spokes fail over time. Everything about those wheels was built to supply giant with a cheap wheel to meet thier low price spec on a mid price bike.

Decent wheels are the single best upgrade you can buy, just plain old traditional 32 spoke wheels, look at my rear wheel in this picture, it's a 32 spoke wheel mavic silver anodized rim, dura ace hub and dt swiss spokes with brass nipples, I have raced it for three seasons and also use it as a race wheel for cyclocross, it gets banged out of shape and I adjust the spokes and once a year re-grease the bearings. I got my $150 worth out of it and it's still going strong. Any shop in the world can work on these wheels, they have not changed in 20 years.

Grrr JR...I was sayin' I WAS going to buy a whole new wheelset b/c I wanted to match the new back and front.

My wheels are insulted by your put-downs.

I wore 2 different socks today on my run to prepare myself for 2 different wheels. I ran a negative split on my brick.

break free of the chains of wankerdom and join the mis-match crew. Sorry I hurt the self esteem of those wheels, I'm sure they need all they can get.
