Whining version – Forecast this morning changes completely from rain ending overnight to rain not ending until Monday. No surprise here. Nailed the swim. Completely buggered T1. Nailed the first half of bike leg. Hit potholes so bad that seat post dropped 2 inches on bike leg. Hard to go fast on a mini bike. Completely buggered T2. Pretty good run leg.Short version – First in AG. Long version – Ok so there is a bit of a grudge match going on here. Local tri team Landry’s has challenged us, Minuteman Road Club (MRC) (and sub group HTH). So I get up about 6am to eat stuff, drink coffee, and leave time for digesting and driving over (all of 10M). I get in 10m before start time, but no worries, in pool sprints here they start a swimmer every 10sec and I am 122. 1220sec= 20m. Orapin and I are 122/123 and F’nDan is 125 so we have time to socialize while waiting in the very warm and cozy pool area. Finally we are queued to go. I check with swimmers fore and aft (an unrelated swimmer is inserted right behind me). All seems good as far as expected pace. 54321 – I hit my watch and take off. Easy first lap before aerobic functions kick in. No one close behind, the push and go under the lane dividers works well. Second lap is switch from every 4th breath to every 3. Another good lap. Same with 3rd. At the end of 4, I catch a swimmer and she lets me pass at the wall. 5th lap is good, the last two laps breathing every two. Seed time was 4:40, actual= 4:41. Walrus out of the pool (no smart remarks here!). And head for bike. T1 – Flummox. Space-Time continuum lapses here as I put on socks, running shoes, HRM (ok I didn’t need this), shirt, glasses (oh look, my glasses are broken in two pieces, throw on ground), helmet, grab bike and head out passing people trying to run to bike start in bike shoes). (For clarity here, I have outfitted my cool tri bike with toe clips, the 18th century version of clipless pedals. The idea being that the time lost in efficient pedaling is made up for in T2 by dropping your bike and running away.) 2:44 for T1. Rookie time. Bike – OK once going, bike seems good. I am headed uphill and passing people. Some of them are people who exited the pool after me. Grrr. At 6M (she kept track) I pass Orapin, who exited the pool 40sec after me. Can you say slow T1? But I am cooking now. I am trading places with a female 39yo rider who passes me on every flat, and I pass back on every hill. At one point I have an oncoming car and 39yo on the right, no where to go. Pothole (or two or three). After some reckless downhill we are still neck and neck. This is when I realize that the potholes have bitten my bike. My seat post has dropped at least two inches!!! I spent yesterday talking to all my shifters and brakes to insure no problems. The seat post obviously felt left out. Thank God the remainder is mostly downhill. But the one last climb is where I lost miss 39yo. Darn. 26:57 for 9.5M. 21.2mph. T2 – Yea running shoes! I hop off and am passing people into T2. I am fast and hang my bike up quickly on the wrong rack! Yes. That’s right, the wrong rack! I throw down my helmet, and realize this. Oh sh*t. I move my bike to the correct place. T2=46sec. Should have been 15sec. What a moron. Run – Even blowing T2 I catch miss 39yo at the run start. Great ride I say. Bye. I settle in and try to maintain a good pace. I see a guy ahead who is within reach. A mile later I see he has a Landry’s shirt (competing club). Another half mile I see his age marked on the calf, my AG! I go into stealth mode and rest a little and just stalk him. We pass the half way mark and head downhill. Then a longish but gradual climb. I muster up some heart beats and pass with confidence. Good pass he says. 5 feet back he says, oh you’re in my age group. 10 feet back he says, oh you’re with MRC, how could it be any worse. I was running scared once we hit the down hills (I’ve already noted this guy can run downhill). With 200 yds I risked a glance back at a 90 deg. turn (bad idea). He was only 100ft back. I pushed. At the finish we had a good comparison chat. He got 2nd. 21:29 for 3.2M. 6:43 pace. Final was 56:38 my watch. Good for first in AG. Not sure overall. This race was a Landry’s versus Minuteman Road Club challenge. We took it. Most everyone in our little sub MRC training group (HTH) medaled. Talk about keeping good company. Great way to start the season. Oh yeah. Picked up a nice FIRM Racing satchel, and Orapin insisted on giving me her FIRST PLACE AG prize of a box of Hammer Gel (O30 is a much tougher AG to medal in). And BTW, O hammered me in the transitions, clocking about 1:45 and :15. I’ll be back with a pic or two later, -CAIgr Note Trophy held by Steve (2nd OA) and me two to the right. Woohooo 1st in AG, and a hilarious report! You are an excellent writer, it has drama, suspense, and incredible descriptive detail. I do hope the pics are of the swim section, especially the walrus move out of the pool! Congratulations! Excellent job, especially the run!

Cool, great race and a funny RR. Were those glasses glasses, or sunglasses? I am thinking glasses with the weather report. If so, then there is your excuse for wrong-racking the bike.I had my seat drop once and didn't notice at first. What a huge difference that makes....of course. Jim

Wooohooooo!!!!!Way to go Craig!!! Seems like "buggering" the transitions didn't hurt you too much - and good for you for running down the Landry's guy!! And hardware to boot! My wife experienced the seat-post drop at Timberman last year - she referred to the aftermath as "pedaling like a clown". She didn't enjoy it any more than you did. ------------------ ->>> John <<<- Go write something in the Newbie Wiki!!

Woooohoooo Nice Job Pro! Do we need to talk about the seat post thing??? 1st in AG and the personal grudge match with the runner made this quite a race for you. Shave those T's down and you'll be smoking! Thanks for sharing, this bodes well fro the rest of the tri season. cfli

Awesome job, Pro... I mean, heck, inspite riding the seat post like a clown, you took home some serious hardware. Great job. Sounds also like your little club cleaned house.

Congrats Craig! What I learned from this report is lower your seat 2 inches and that helps you win your age group.

Great race! You came through on the run when it counted.I've had seat problems like that - only mine happened near the beginning. Must make some kind of difference in a good way because I won my AG in that race too. ------------------ Don My Profile

I just posted this over in Boomers. http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/010029.shtml Some of you multisporters should go over and give Econo an atta-girl. Maybe we can lure her over here. Her race report... http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/010011.shtml -CiagrEcono vs Pro Ok here is the real competition. First timer Econo (ok second timer) versus the Pro. You will not believe this. I gave Econo 30sec/lap - 5mph - and 1m/M. I just made these numbers up before seeing any results. I subtracted these differences from my paces (slower) and calculated my times for her OR race. I then added these differences to Econo paces (faster) and calculated her times for my MA race. I left T times alone. Here are the results. Econo if in MA: 42 sec/lap = 3:30 T1 = 2:55 21mph = 26:34 T2 = :34 7:23m/M = 23:41 Total = 57:14 compared to my 56:32 (a difference of 1.238%) Me if in OR: 1:26/lap = 14:20 T1 = 2:38 15.7mph = 47:46 T2 = :46 7:43m/M = 23:55 Total = 1:29:25 compared to her 1:28:22 (a difference of 1.188%) So - Econo wins in OR, and I win in MA, with a difference in winning percentage of 0.05%. Given the split in win/loss record and goals against (oh wait, that's soccer), and a difference between races that is 0.05%, I think this is deemed a TIE. Unbelievable, I demand a rematch! -cAfgr
