We did this last year and had over 100 posts. So we will do it again.

Post your questions. Some veterans even learned a thing or too.

About 50 degrees (hip flexor angle). Sprinters will be higher. Knee flexion will be 30-40

Depends on how fast you can run.

My running technique looks like a coke machine falling down a flight of stairs, plus I don't have a real buffed up body to be pracing around in those skimpy trousers. Good thing I have the tages on them.

How long do you run before you have to bring water? And how do you carry it when you hate things bouncing around your waist or on your back?

Weigh yourself before and after your runs. If you start loosing more then 1% of your weight you will need to start drinking. I usually put water bottles in my mailbox and take a drink as I loop by my house. Fuelbelt and others are very easy to get used to and are great for long runs.

I use a less scientific method than TriBob. Runs longer than an hour, I bring water or Gatorade. If its a hot day, I'll bring water on a shorter run.

I actually use fluids for two reasons. The obvious is to hydrate. The less obvious is to train myself to drink while running. If I'm just interested in hydrating, then I'll stash the fluids at one or two points on the run. If I'm training myself to drink, I make sure I'm drinking every two miles. And in that case, no real alternative to bringing the fluids with me.

Mike

I have my first 5k stand alone, and my kids are doing the 1k kids run. Anything I need to do for/with them to make sure they have fun? BTW they have 2 speeds ~ Sleeping and running, so the running part I am not real worried about....

Gomie does not like stalkers. Me neither.

Re: Water, on shorter runs I do them on a college campus so I can duck into a building for a drink rather than wear my fuel belt. If I'm out for an hour or more and it's hot out I bring gatorade and water with me on my fuel belt. I am a sweater so I have to replenish quickly or else suffer the consequences.

Any of you guys use them fancy elastic shoelaces so you don't have to tie your sneakers? Which ones you recommend?

You breathe every 3 strokes? Every 4? Does it vary?

Do you REALLY do all that bike and chain maintenance EVERY time you ride?

Do you laugh at people who bring a bucket/stool into the transition area for a seat while changing shoes?

I use Yankz, but I doubt there is much difference between brands. You could also just put a toggle on your regular laces.

You breathe every 3 strokes? Every 4? Does it vary??[I try to breathe every 3 so I can see what is going on to either side of me. Sometimes I breathe every stroke, especially if it is really congested and I need to keep an eye on the people around me.

Um, good question. I hate bike maintenance. I wipe down the frame and if it was wet out I will clean and lube the chain.

Yes, as I fall on my a** because I don't have a handy stool
I bring a little towel to put my stuff on and although I try not to sit down, if I need to I just sit on the towel. Simplicity is key in transitions. The less stuff you have there the less time you will spend wondering what to do.

jkv--I assume you've trained your kids? Tell 'em to get out there, do their best and HAVE FUN! My kids raced this past weekend. They finished #4, #2 and #3. They all got a big hug at the finish. (okay, okay, I was really impressed that the 8yo beat the 10 and 12yo by a good 30secs...)

Suggestions on how to convince my husband that I really do need $2500 for a new bike with a custom paint job?

Point out what kind of legs women who ride $2,500 bikes have.

I used to justify the use of a bucket to tote my stuff to transition...that is until I got an over-priced, fancy tri bag to replace my free bucket. Triathletes are suckers for just about anything tri-specific...me included!

OK here goes..... (signed up for Tri for the Cure women's sprint tri August 5).

For bike training, what do I do? Do I just go out and ride for time and/or distance?

And will I get laughed at for having a "comfort" bike? I love my bike but it's nothing special (Diamondback Wildwood), just great for the bike trails I ride. I never thought I'd do anything with it other than ride as a recreational activity.

I'm most nervous about the bike part even though I know I could go ride my bike any day the 12 miles. Of course running after that is another story, this I know!

Thanks.
Carrie

How often do you ache after you train? Are most days pain free or are you always in a state of discomfort trying to get up to the next level?

Just go out and ride. If you can get up to 1.5 - 2 hrs for your long ride that will be good. Any bike will do. Sprints you will see everything including many comfort bikes.
