Me and my wife are registered. It will be my 3rd marathon, and I will hopefully be going for a BQ with any luck. If not, I may pace my wife instead, as it will be her first. I'm especially looking forward to this race, as my Dad and stepmom live in the suburbs, and I'm very much looking forward to spending a few days with them.

What? I didn't realize there was a lottery for the 10 miler. My husband is going to kill me if he doesn't get in - I didn't figure the 10 miler would close! OOOOPS!

OK, I started training this week! Less than 18 weeks to go. This will be my first Twin Cities and I was reading up on it on marathonguide.com. So how bad are the hills at the end? Is this a fast course or slow due to lots of turns? I have heard both.

It's a decent course. I personally REALLY hate the last part of the course -- But, I am biased because I have CRASHED there everytime I ran the full. The big hill leading up to St. Thomas is fairly brutal, but not really the problem in my mind. To me, the Summit Avenue death march is the problem. Doesn't look like much on the elevation chart, but it is a fairly persistent hill all the way until you get to the nice downhill at the finish. Others, chime in with your opinon.

Well, use this link, http://www.mtcmarathon.org/PDFs/TCM_CourseMap.pdf, and make sure you increase the size so you can view the elevation change more clearly. The overall elevation change isn't huge, but obviously from mile 21.5 to 23, it's gonna be a tough grind. Also, at mile 2 there is nasty quick climb. However, the next 18 miles look very nice overall. I intend to do a few long runs incorporating hills, and most of my normal runs have a few decent climbs if I so choose. As for me, since I will hopefully be going for a BQ, I'm going to plan on banking about 2 minutes before I hit mile 21. This way I can run the hill without increasing effort too hard, and hopefully have enough left to push hard for the last few miles. That's the plan anyway......

Agree with hermosa - I hate the last 5-6 miles of this course. The hills aren't that bad except they occur during miles 20-25 when you're already tired. If you're shooting for a time, you'll need to have some in the bank when you hit St. Paul.

I agree about the hill up to St Thomas. I remember it was brutal the two times I ran the marathon. However a funny thing happened last year when I ran the 10 mile. I kept waiting for that brutal hill to arrive and all of a sudden I was going past St Thomas. Somehow I missed it. I guess that hill looks a lot worse after 21 miles than it does after 5. Actually I enjoyed going up Summit in the marathon. I didn't think the hill was bad, or even very noticable, and Summit was lined with spectators cheering us on. If the spectators weren't there supporting us then Summit might be tough as a long straight run before the turn to the finish, but with them out there I thought it wasn't too bad.

Runninlaw - Hills at the end punish those who have been too aggressive and are trying to hang on. The 1st 1/2 is beautiful - its good to 20 or 20.5 - when ever they hit you with the 1st one - Welcome to St Paul - Bam!, but after 23 ish - you are back in high gear - then catherdral then capitalHave fun everyone -

You are scaring me, people. I snubbed Chicago for Twin Cities. I am dreaming of a substantial PR but now... I leave in the flattest town in the entire world!! And I mean it!How serious are those hills? How do they compare to Newton in the Boston Marathon? Has anybody run Hartford? Anything like the hill on Asylum at mile 21? anything like the rolling hills of West Hartford? Thanks!! zzz

snailrunner, I think it is a pretty easy course (definitely easier than Boston) and it has great spectator support. Since I got hurt in Fargo and didn't get under 3 there, I intend to go under 3 at the Twin Cities this year (if my calf ever heals).

Yeah Spinach!!! TC is my only sub 3 -- but from my previous comments, you know how I feel about the course. I'll stick with the 10 miler this year and head south 2 weeks later for my marathon. Looking to be in the sub 2:50 range... YIKES! [This message has been edited by hermosaboy (edited Jun-08-2007).]

I'm sure your calf will heal, spinach!! Easier than Boston, that's music to my ears. I had heard so much about the beauty of the course that I couldn't resist any more and let Chicago go. I was having a rough year since last fall due to some health problems so I am really dreaming of coming back in Twin Cities. Sorry about my mispelling... got my vowels wrong today... I LIVE in the flattest town in the world... it's almost surreal. But if it's indeed easier than Boston, I am more relieved. I want to shoot for a 3:28, but let's see in 10 weeks how realistic is that.

Need to vent, sorry... I registered for TwinCities as soon as it opened. Two days later I sent my proofs to run in Wave 1. Okay, I just checked I was placed in Wave 2!!! Okay, it's Sunday, not much I can do. But these people will hear from me tomorrow on the phone!!Now, in the case wave 1 is already filled... does any body know how fast it clears up? I am working for a sub 3:30 as I have been very close to it already!! I am sooo upset about this!

Definitely easier than Boston, definitely slower than Chicago. If they keep you in wave 2 look at the bright side...it will be like you're leading the race. I heard some guys talking about that after Boston last year. They were so upset about being in the 2nd wave, but loved it and wanted to be there every year.

Well, but in Boston everybody is fast respect their number corrals. I was in the second wave twice and always ran at my pace. But here in Twin Cities, I have all the qualifications to be in the wave 1 and I know I run faster than many people who are in wave 1 but I was still put in wave 2. I don't know if it's because they didn't receive my times or the capacity filled up before (2000 people). I'll call and ask. I am sooooo upset!!

I was also placed in Wave 2, even though I sent in proof a while back. I'm wondering if it just hasn't been updated yet. I sent them an email, just now... Dan
