Obsessor...hopefully you see this tonight. What will you be wearing tomorrow, I want to give you a shout as you turn the corner coming off the Nokomis bridge. I'll be the guy hobbling around with a jealous look in his eye.

Any of the other locals that see this give me a fashion report and estimated 12 mile time and I'll give you a shout as well. Good luck everyone!

Wow. That was HARD.

I've run three previous marathons in under 3:30, but today was a whole different beast.

The first half of the marathon (13.1 miles) was good. I got to the half mark at 1:49 -- right on time to finish inunder four hours, which is what I was aiming for when all the weather reports came in.

BUT, the last half of the marathon - it was a war getting to the finish line. The weather got to me and by the time my right calf started seizing up at mile 16, it was over...

I finished. But it was really HARD. If I had kept a slower pace for the first half, I probably would have finished sooner. But, once my legs gave out on me, there was no relief, no matter what.

So, it was a good learning experience on running in warmer more humid weather. I didn't do any long runs in this kind of stuff.

I am drinking lots of beer and then I am going to go pass out.

my splits:
5k: 24:55
10k: 50.08
13.1m: 1:48:32
30k: 2:50:16
20m: 3:07:53
finish: 4:27:46

1 hour and 20 minutes for the last 10k. Unbelievable... But my legs had given up...

I'm disappointed, but I'll do another one to make up for it! I'm glad I finished, though!

That was ugly. Worst positive split ever, and even my first half was bad! Survived, finished, and that's a good feeling. My head is still pounding. Ugh.

VICIOUS!!!

When I got up this morning, I knew it was going to be BRUTAL!

For those of you that ran the full -- you have my utmost respect!!!

I fought the mental demons the whole way in the 10 miler and seriously considered a DNF. Hung on and kicked during the last mile to SQUEAK in under an hour.

Just confirmed again that I do not like that course very much.

Derek -- recover well and find a fast course on a cooler day. I look to see you crack another round number time barrier.

I can only confirm what you say here. I ran the full and went out with the 3:30 pacer. he decided to blaze out at the first 3 miles more like a 3:20 pace. I actually felt great through the half but the wheels fell off around 15. I ran into the pacer (3:30) later - he had thrown off his balloons - every man for himself. Yikes. I decided to enjoy the ride and stroll in. This was definitely a beautiful course. BUT WTF IS UP WITH ENDANGERED AID STATIONS?!?!?! They knew it was going to be hot! Aid stations every 2-2.5 miles was RIDICULOUS. I ended up ok, but I am amazed at the lack of water provided - particularly the last 10K.

Congrats everyone on surviving. And FWIW, my husband was in corral 1 for the 10 miler and 30 secs before the horn a pregnant woman collapsed on him! He and another guy had to protect her from being trampled and take her to medics after everyone passed!

AND after the marathon we stopped at a fire station in St. Paul to call a cab and they said they got calls for 10 people down in the 10 mile race alone. Crazy.

The weather was brutal yesterday. I knew this was going to be bad when I was standing at the start and I was covered with sweat before the race even began. That was not a good sign. I tried to go out at my planned pace and within the first two miles I knew that this wasn't the day.

I am running the marathon in Mason City Iowa next week and my plan was to run the Twin Cities hard, try to break three and then run next week pretty easy. Since the weather didn't cooperate I changed my plans by the first water stop and decided I wasn't going to kill myself in the heat yesterday and instead I eased into a nice easy long run pace and decided to drop out around the halfway point.

I asked at the half mark how long the wait was going to be for the bus to head back to the finish and was told 45 minutes or an hour, so I decided to head on. At the 14 mile mark I decided to turn back to the half way mark and take the bus from there. I thought that if I headed too much further it would be that much more difficult to drop out and so I ran about a mile the wrong direction on the course. That was interesting.

Oh well, there will be other races to run. I think I will try to run a little harder on Sunday than I originally planned Provided the weather cooperates, of course.

I admire all of you who decided to stick it out and were able to finish.

4:03... I had trained sooo hard... it was brutal... I was on BQ pace (3:40) until mile 9... Mile ten I felt lightheaded... Until mile 20 it was just brutal. Also the water stations were a bit unpredictable... they weren't exactly at the same distance... at one point I was so thirsty that I cried: "where's the water???!!!"
It got cloudy when I reached St. Paul, and fellows, believe it or not, I felt better and I found that summit avenue much easier than the rolling hills in Minneapolis. I picked up my pace for a strong finish... but this was after terrible 10 miles in the middle... no Boston 2008 for me... oh well... I am so sad...

Tough race today. Very tough. I was shooting for 3:15, which was a huge test for me even in good conditions. I could tell by mile 8 (given my HR and effort level) that it wasn't gonna happen.

I came in at 3:23. I realize now that I ran very well given the conditions. At the time it was tough to handle...watching the splits get worse and worse. And then you have the elevation chart....um...how about updating miles 23 to 25 correctly.
.
While it is disappointing to have weather play such a huge role in a race I've trained for since May....it was a huge learning experience, however. I was able to stay fairly well hydrated, kept the electrolytes up (4x sodium PowerGels were a life savior for me I'm guessing), and was able to keep running. The last 10k of this race was by far the hardest running I've endured since I began running 16 months ago.

I'll try to get a RR up in a few days, and I hope everyone is recovering well.

PacerChris, if you are around...how did your run go?

Whew! That was rough.

Short story - I made my time pretty much how I wanted, but it wasn't pretty. My goal was 1:34:30 for the first half, build a bank of 90 seconds by 21 and then give 60 seconds of that back on the hills and finish with a 3:09:30. I went through the first half at 1:34:14 by my watch (1:34:05 by the results site), got the banked time up to about 80 seconds and finished in 3:09:36...but it was in doubt the last 5-6 miles if I could hold on.

My group was down to 3-4 by 17, down to 1 by 19, zero by 21.5 or so. The last guy to drop back finished about a minute or so behind me (great job, Jorge!). Once I was solo, it was really a struggle to keep going and I just kept saying "Don't lose more than 10 seconds of your bank this next mile." I popped into the medical tent for some broth and cold water and felt a lot better after that.

The 3:30 pacer had a rough day - I don't know about his starting miles (he's really an outstnading pacer - it takes a few miles to zero in to the pace) but he held on as long as he could. He was pretty beat up afterwards, as was another pacer who was floating (started with the 3:20 group, tried to pick up some of the remnants of the 3:30 group). It was rough out there - that was harder than the time I ran at Air Force 3 weeks ago in good weather (20 minutes faster!)

Congrats to those who endured!

I finished! It sucked! I will try again. I felt bed within the first 3 miles and wanted to really quit...I mean REALLY!

I tore off the 4 hour pace band I work so hard for this summer and just focused on the finish.

I loved when the crowds cranked the music and turned on the hoses, but that was about all I loved about this run on this day. Actually, I loved everything except the running. It would have been a great day to sit out on the boat and have cocktails!

And, Hello Minnesota...It's like 50 degrees today (Monday, the day after the race)!!!!

Well if 7215 finished I have first hand knowledge there were at least 7,216 who started and I am pretty sure there were a few others like me who dropped out. Actually I heard on the news yesterday that there were over 900 people who dropped during the race. So I guess I wasn't alone.

Sorry to say it since this is essentially my "current" home town marathon, but this one is no longer on my dance card.

1. Don't like the course.
2. The weather never seems to cooperate.
3. The attiitude of the race directors seems to be getting very close to antagonistic. If you don't know what I mean, look at your race booklet about climbing fences and notice the volunteers shirts that had the no bandits symbols on them.

I thought this was supposed to be a friendly marathon that is big, but with a small town feel. Seems to be migrating somewhere I am not happy about.

But as Dennis Miller said...

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!!!

I still like the marathon even though it has been too hot the last several years. Perhaps they just need to move it to the end of October instead of the first sunday in October. The thing that I really like about the race is the great spectator support along the entire course.

I don't think the race director was all that antagonistic, however I cannot imagine doing that job. The logistics of putting on a race that size could make anyone a bit harried.

One thing I will say about the bandits however. A couple years ago at the Ron Daws 25k in the spring I heard people saying that the Twin Cities Marathon pays Minneapolis something like $80,000 for the use of the streets, so with 10,000 runners that means that about $8 of our entry fee just goes to this. I don't know what they pay to St Paul or to any other cities that the race may go through. People running along the course should be paying their share. One potential problem the bandits could have presented in a race in conditions like we had this year is witht he water supply. I didn't hear anything about the Twin Cities water stops running out of supplies like Chicago did but if there were a large number of bandits then this could have been a problem. It wouldn't affect runners at your speed or at my speed but they could present a problem for the back of the packers. I can understand the stance on the bandits.

I am not going to take it off my dance card just yet but right now I am thinking that I might just do the 10 miles next year.

I just read the news reports and apparently the race officials were considering shutting down the race, but never had to b/c it didn't get quite hot enough. They said it was 82 degrees, but felt much hotter b/c of the high humidity.

900 runners dropped out, 40 some went to the hospital and 250 were treated at medical tents. Definitely no Chicago, but it was a hot one.

As has been said previously ... yuck!!

Fortunately (and this is probably the first and only time I will say that having an injury is fortunate), I was recovering from a calf strain and decided to run TCM for "fun" as a training run. Well when I was drenched with sweat by mile 3, the plan became let's get to the half way point, see the wife and kids and tell them to go home since that's where I was headed. I hit the mat at 13.1 in 2:01 and found the EMTs and asked where the bus was.

Overall pleased with the effort since I had only run 4miles during the week leading up the marathon and coming back from the calf. The good news is the calf is feeling better and I'm on track for the Marine Corps Marathon in 3 weeks.

spinach - I think we may have been on the same bus to the capitol ... did your driver get lost and drop you at the top of the hill? In any event, good luck next week in Mason City.

Fast Like the Wind,

Yeah it sounds like we were on the same bus. Although the driver would say that she didn't get lost, she just got incorrect directions.

You sound like you got in a good run for the weekend, the same as me. Good luck in the Marine Corps Marathon and take care of your calf. I have had problems with mine off and on for over two years now. It isn't fun.

I keep checking the weather forecast for next Sunday, and so far at least it is looking pretty good. Nothing like last Sunday. I guess I will try to run the one in Mason City harder than I originally planned.

I normally run the the 10 miler but decided not to this year. Good decision I would rather run when it is bone chilling cold than hot and sticky
