I don't feel that I am in the shape that I wanted to be in for the marathon and so i may have to adjust my goals somewhat for the race. Tomroow I will get an indication of how I am going when I run the City of Lakes 25k. Is anyone else running that one? ------------------ MyUserProfile

Well, the City of Lakes 25k went a lot better than I expected, so I may need to readjust my goals for the Twin Cities again. It seems I didn't lose as much speed as I feared I did from the down time after getting hurt in Fargo. I hit the half marathon mark in the race today right at 1:25 and although I was slowed a lot the last two miles by a terrible side stitch (where did that come from?) I managed to finish the race in just under 1:42, a new PR about a minute better than my time last year in this race. Maybe I will try to give three hours a shot at the TCM after all. ------------------ MyUserProfile

Anyone planning on running in the 3:10 group - I'll be your fearless leader. I'm really looking forward to it - I've heard nothing but great things about Twin Cities (except a few late hills!) I had originally been scheduled for St. George but got switched to TC.------------------ Pacer Dude

I will cheer for you as you come by -- just running the 10 miler this year. Those late hills are really a pain to me!!! Don't try to bank time though. Although the hills are nothing major, the are persistent and will definitely drag you down. Last year, I was on pace for 2:54 (and trained to run that) until I hit the hill leading to Saint Thomas. Gave back 5 minutes over the last few miles...

I've been on the fence about whether to start with the 3:10 group or not. I'm not entirely confident I have it in me, but I've been running well lately, especially at the temps and dewpoints have fallen in the last few days. I'll have to see how my 20 mile race goes this weekend. But, if I do decide to go out with the 3:10 crowd, I'll know we'll be in good hands.

Man...now *this* is tempting. I ran a 1:31:55 HM in Viriginia Beach a week ago Sunday. I believe I could have gone sub 1:31 if I had paced myself to do so. However, your half split would be around 1:34, right PacerChris? My main goal is a sub 3:16 for my BQ, but I feel like with a good taper I could get close to 3:10. Probably not worth going out too fast and blowing up, however.

I wish I was planning to run 3:10! Nope, I am hoping for 3:25 so I am on my own. What is your plan for pacing Chris? How do you think you are going to attack the hills? I have been trying to figure out my race plan. They look pretty bad - especially the 2 mile uphill at 20.5ish....

The marathon's web site has suggestions for pacing for the course. http://www.mtcmarathon.org/Marathon/PaceCharts.cfm To get an idea for a pace to handle the hill up to St. Thomas (that one is short but tough) and then the hill up Summit Ave for 3:25 try to take the average of the 3:20 pace chart and the 3:30 pace chart. Notice they suggest that you build in a cushion for over the first 20 miles so that you can slow down a bit going up the hill. Good luck. ------------------ MyUserProfile

That is also going to be my plan of attack - a few easy miles to wrm up, then try build up to 60 seconds (maybe a little more - nee some perspective from the pacers who have done TC before) by mile 20. I certainly will not attack the hills - if we can get 60-80 seconds in the bank, we could give back 20-30 seconds each of the 2 miles and still have a little cushion to pay with (plus the 59 seconds the BAA gives you - don't forget that!)------------------ Pacer Dude

Generally speaking, attacking hills is definitely not the way to go. (not talking about elites and their surge strategies, etc) It's better to maintain intensity of effort, which means slowing down some uphill, and speeding up downhill. Of course, that's easier said that done at times....

I could shred the entire group by attacking on the hills! Boy, wouldn't our team coordinator get some interesting emails then - "We were running a steady pace of 7:15 and the first uphill climb he dropped down to 6:10!!"

Haha, yeah. Drop the hammer at mile 21 at this race and see how many go with you.

I think you will be closer than that! This course isn't like Lumberjack. It's more uphill than downhill... You'd think with the course change that they would try to even that out, but no!
