the key to winter training

(and to train for Boston)

is to go south....I just got back from Punta Cana.....no A/C while running on treadmill....too hot to run outside...30 degrees...nice break from the -20 weather here though.

I wish! I had hoped to get down to Jacksonville this February or March, but it just isn't happening.....I ran with a group at 8 am this morning and it was funny (?) because as you ran up behind someone, you could see the backs of their shirts/jackets and shoulders were covered with ice. Crazy. THe good news is that it is supposed to hit the mid 30s here tomorrow. Happy dance is in order! I hope it sticks around though, b/c Monday is a rest day for me!!

PacerChris - I don't know how you manage on the treadmill - that things sucks the life out of me! While it is hard to get motivated to run outside in these temps...the treadmill is akin to torture......

8 weeks and 1 day to go folks...and only 10 days until March!

wa5yom, every time I try to go to this, I see part of your page, then get an error message from Internet Explorer. Not sure what the problem is, but thought you should know.....

I have been reading through the old thread from the other link that was posted - some really great stuff there. It is getting me fired up about the race - just in time to start cranking up the training!

Anyway, it is a great thread....do check it out.....

it also gave info on that Nike predictor too: The Nike site is http://www.nike.com/nikerunning/usa/home.jhtml?ref=global_home . You do have to sign up, though. It's free.
Once you login, click on "Train", then click on "Marathon Monday". That means Boston. (You can also generate splits customized for New York, Chicago, and a few others.). If you print it out, it will also give you a custom spectator guide and pace bracelet.

But when I hit the back button, the page then loaded, and I was able to download the files. Wicked wee-yahd.

Hi Tim,

Your pages are fine in FireFox, but when using Internet Explorer, I get this error too. If you reload the page several times it will eventually load. If you disable JavaScript it will load fine too. I did some experimenting, and it seems to be a problem with the JavaScript for the Yahoo messenger widget on your sidebar -- if it is not that important, I would consider taking it out...

Hope that helps!

p.s. thanks for the tips -- good stuff!

Here is a non-javascript method for displaying your yahoo status

"Train" then "Pace Calculator" or "Events" then "Marathons" to bring up the Marathon Monday link.

Hey kestrou,

Looks like we'll both be running the same trail race on 04/01.

I "just" got signed up for Boston as well. I wasn't going to run it, then thought I really should. Although my wife is going to kill me because she may not be able to go this time. It will be a quick trip for me. Fly in on Sunday, fly out on Monday after the race. We'll see. She might still be able to go with me. I hope anyway. CR My Profile

Craig - what pace you looking to run? I know a few guys in the low 2:50 range and some 3-3:10. You might want some company and I know several folks running this year. Just remember this isn't an ultra - you're not allowed to sleep at the aid stations.

Everyone else getting excited? I had a good workout today - starting the speedy stuff tomorrow but snuck in a few good miles today. 7 weeks from Monday - it'll be here before we know it!

One thing that bothers me is that every one of these Boston pace calculators has me running 10-15 seconds faster than my average pace for the 1st 4 miles. On the other hand, everyone says don't go out too fast.

How can I run faster than my average for the 1st 4 miles and still not be going out too fast?

I know there's downhills, but there seems to be a contradiction.

My approach to the Boston course, and any other for that matter, is to try and pace myself for a fairly even effort. This means that I plan to go faster on the downhills, slower on the uphills, and if I'm really racing the course, I know that the last few miles will be tough, even on level ground.

I know that others will argue this point, but In my opinion you should take advantage of the easier effort when running the downhill sections of this course and run somewhat faster than the pace you will average over the entire distance.

My experience is that at Boston you will be "up to speed" very quickly because of the strict seeding of the runners at the start. Running a negative or even split on this course is extremely difficult. I don't even try.

I'm with Greg - tough to neg split Boston, but you have to balance that with going out crazy-fast. I'm shooting for a 2:50 so I'm thinking 1:23:30-1:24 for the first half since that's where most of the downhills are. Last year I ran the first half about 30-45 seconds faster than the second...I think I could have made a little bigger difference without sacrificing the second half too much.

Hey Chris,
I'll probably be shooting for the 3:10-3:15 range to play it safe. I've been training, but after being sick for three weeks after running Houston, and practically having nearly every tooth in my mouth redone the last 2-3 weeks, I am a little behind. Well, alot. But as usual I'll bounce right back into serious training.
I got the go ahead to run the race today from the lovely wife and booked my flight/hotel ASAP. This will be my 4th trip to Boston and first without her in tow.
There is no doubt you'll be rested at the finish when I come through if you pull that 2:50 off
Maybe we can get together at the village in the sea of runners. I almost assume we'll be starting from the same corral. Craig

We should try to connect for sure. I know a lot of people running so we'll have a good sized group to hang with in Hopkinton. Are you staying near the finish line? We got a sweet place right on Boylston 3rd floor apartment right over the 26 mile marker. If it's going to rain, this is the year to do so since my wife could bring the kids inside to watch the race and see me from the window!

I'm expecting a dazzling smile from you with all the new teeth...if you got them white enough you may not need a headlamp for Western States, just show your pearly whites!

Chris - Your place to stay is pretty sweet. Great for the family. I found a room at the Seaport Hotel. Not far from the action, but a cab ride away. No big deal. That is great your family is able to make the trip this time with you.

Things will be interesting with the 10:00AM start this year. In a way I'm glad, especially with the heat in 2003 and 2004. 2006 was darn near perfect weather.

Thanks for clarifying this. If you do "Train" then "Pace Calculator," look to the right of the screen and there is a link to Marathon Monday. It is pretty cool. Also, if you change the start time to 10:00 am, enter your stats, then print it out and it will give you a nifty spectator sheet and pace bracelet.

I hope training is going well for all - only 7 weeks, 1 day! After the 2 feet of snow we got this weekend, I am looking forward to some spring training in Jacksonville, FL next weekend!

OK, I'm in! I just registered. I've been training for Boston for months, but wasn't quite ready to commit. I missed a lot of runs due to colds and work/travel. But I think I'll be OK. I'm over the hump now; I did my longest run (22) on Monday, and it went quite well. Much more pleasant than last year's 22, which was in 16 degrees, into a 30-mph headwind for the first half. My front water bottle froze solid.

Still not sure what to target. I'm getting rather fed up with still not having beat my first marathon time (3:12:18), after three more (two of which were Boston). Depending on tune-up race performance and weather, I might try, once again, for 3:10. Fallback would be 3:12 (PR). Next fallback would be 3:20 (requalify). I'm so nervous about the weather, though. If it's over about 65, even 3:20 might not happen, which would be pretty disappointing. I would have beat 3:10 last year, I'm pretty sure, if I hadn't had nasty Achilles tendonitis the last 5 weeks of training. I still pulled off a 3:14:19. Crossing my fingers I can stay healthy from here on out this time.

Personally, I am going to run as a fast finish long run (hopefully).

Plan is to try for a course PR, but not a marathon PR.

7:20ish through Heartbreak -- then hammer it home. Hopefully the execution will follow through. If all goes well, should come in around 3:09...

Anyone want to run along with me?

Possibly! What is your qualifier time? Mine is last year's 3:14:19. Might push me into the 6th corral, not sure.

Well, the qualifier time is 2:59:47. However, I don't think they would have a problem with me moving back -- moving forward they probably frown upon...
