thanks for the link. kinda interesting.

but they clearly needed a solar astronomer on the production staff to tell them: "sun rises in the east. don't film at sunrise."

I thought that as well, but I guessed that it would be too congested at any time other than 6AM (or whatever time it was filmed).

Has anyone run both Boston and the Spirit of St. Louis full or half in the last couple of years? Perhaps the video really minimized the Boston hilliness, but it didn't seem any worse than the Spirit course.

A little scary that I didn't even spot Heartbreak Hill on that video. Going in a car and then playing the video in fast-forward mode makes it hard to get a real feel for it. I think the Flying Pig video was better in that regard.

Thanks,
Mr. Pat!

Thanks,
Mr. Pat!

I've run both courses and I feel the Spirit of St. Louis course is at least as difficult as Boston. St. Louis has constant rolling hills, start to finish, with no extended downhill sections at all like Boston.

What are y'all doing for tune-up races? I'll be at the New Bedford Half Marathon (3/18), the Eastern States 20 (3/25), and haven't decided on a shorter race for the next weekend. Might do Stu's 30K on 3/4 as well, but that depends on a few things...

There's a big 15k here in Cincinnati - tough hilly course - about 3 weeks before Boston. I'm also thinking about doing Papa John's 10 miler 2 weeks out and racing it hard, but I'm considering doing a small marathon pacing a friend as my last long run that same weekend. Can't wait for March - Jan & Feb have been and will be all about building base and starting to add the speedwork while March will be race month, much more speed, and a little less volume. Racing is a lot more fun than slogging out 70+ miles/week in the cold!

not sure how it fits in for you but the North Shore 30k in beverly is in March and that was my last 'big race' before Boston.
The scenery was beautiful (along the water) and I remember some hills.

Just committed and paid my entry fee. Now it's pins and needles until I get confirmation.

I'll be doing a tune up half on March 11. I'd like to get a 10k or two in, but no plans yet.

I will be doing New Bedford Half, other than that mostly long runs with my running club. That always works for me. 3rd Boston, 7th marathon. Good luck in New Bedford!

Avis - I don't have any way to contact you (no e-mail address in your profile) - so if you (or somebody else) are interested in sharing a hotel room then hit me ASAP as my name just showed up on the "confirmed entrants" list at the race website. My e-mail address is kestrou@nexlan.com.

My tune-up race is a 30mi trail ultra on April 1st - it's three loops of the following 10 mile elevation profile, so I think I'll have my hill training in!

That might do it. Which one is Heartbreak Hill.

I'd say about lap #3 that every single one of them's gonna feel like a Heartbreak!

You're doing the Clinton Lake run, eh, kestrou? Are you a Second Wind member? Have fun at Clinton! I was too scared to do it so close to Boston. Or at all, for that matter.

Edit: Never mind, I figured it out, Kevin. KRR member?

I'll be doing the Lincoln Half in Springfield, IL on 3/31 as my warmup.

Yup, a Kennekuker - and a "Buffalo", if you're familiar with that rag-tag bunch!

I've never done any running over by Springfield - originally from Indiana so I run races "Champaign and points east" when running locally.

You ever make it over to Kennekuk races? We have a 28.4 trail ultra this coming Saturday - starting temps projected to to be about 10 degrees, so bring your mittens!

Yup, I know a lot of the Buffalo. I do run some KRR races, generally 2-3 of the four Grand Slams each year (haven't yet managed to do all four in a single year). I was at Kickapoo this weekend, running the Mtn Goat course, the HS xc course, and Wilderness/Siberian. Man, they really churned up a chunk of that trail--it was nasty trying to run through all those frozen backhoe tracks.

Not to highjack the thread, but does anyone know how to get to that really cool Boston thread that was in the Boomer forum last year. It gave a tip for every day leading up to Boston. Last year I didn't care nearly as much about it as I do now!

Thanks if you can help and good luck to all.

Thanks for the link!

One thing to keep in mind, the start has changed from noon to either 10am or 10:30am (depending on the wave you're in) and the text at that link hasn't been changed accordingly.

Tune up races? I'm not pulling a kestrou, but I am doing the March Madness half marathon on March 18. It is supposed to be a very hilly, tough course, so I will get my hills in too! Other than that, I will probably do any races I can find in the next 6 weeks - there aren't many around here other than on St. Pat's weekend!

The Boston tips page wouldn't load for me - I got an error message . . .

It's been kind of hit or miss the last few times I have tried to go there. Worked this morning...

Okay, so the original thread isn't accessible through coolrunning, but I did find the thread cached on Google. Let me know if this link works for you: http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:XW6XRbB5-I8J:www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/006070.shtml+boston+running+tips+site:coolrunning.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

If it doesn't work for you, then simply go to Google and enter the search terms: "boston running tips site: coolrunning.com". The first link that comes up is a link to the thread, but you have to click on the CACHED link rather than the link it gives you. This will get you to the right page, and you can go from there.

Anyone know if they're using Gatorade Endurance on the course? And does the link for folks to follow your progress during the race appear on the BAA site only on raceday? Is there someplace I should be smart enough to find this info on my own?

rtravers, thanks for the new link - worked like a charm.

I believe they are serving Gatorade Endurance - that is what they advertised last year. The BAA website isn't the greatest in my opinion, but they do have Gatorade Endurance listed under sponsors.

I hope training is going well for everyone. It has been so ridiculously cold here lately that training has been challenging and somewhat painful! Yesterday I ran with wind chills of -15 - my face and feet were killing me the first couple of miles!!

The key to winter training is to be TOUGH. Heck I run shirtless most of the time...of course, I'm in my basement on my treadmill, but by gosh I'm still TOUGH!

I'm freakin' sick of the single digit temps and no races to run...Feb sucks!

Hang in there guys. It has sucked the last couple of weeks. I hate the wind. The treadmill is boring and I'm feeling stir-crazy. But I check out the accuweather 15 day forecast and as long as I see one day in there that isn't -20 windchill, I have hope and I'm happy Seriously, the temps should warm up enough to get back out there comfortably soon. Plus we have just two months to go now! Keep your eyes on the prize!
