That spreadsheet is pretty cool - I was thinking about what I should target for the first half to get the PR I am aiming for and I came up with something pretty close to it based on how I ran last year. I'll plug in my time from last year and see how the pace factors compare - I felt like I ran a perfect race but perhaps could have gone slightly faster the first half without sacrificing too much in the second half.Only 4.5 months left! Geez, I hate the winter!

For those on a budget, can someone give me some advice on which part of town to stay and still "experience" the event? In previous marathons, I usually fly in the day before the race, attend the expo/pick up bib and head straight for the hotel room where I spend until marathon morning. Strictly business I guess. I decided to maybe fly in a few days early for Boston and maybe soak up some of the atmosphere that surrounds the event. I've never been there before, so maybe I can spend a few days wandering around. Any recommendations on general locations for lodging (Newtown, Backbay)? I don't plan on renting a car and don't mind public transportation.

Hey Chris, I really hate winter too so how about we do the math right! My calculations come up with about 3.5 months left before the Boston Marathon (14 weeks 2 days) and only 2.5 months until the first day of spring (10 weeks 4 days to be exact) since the Vernal Equinox is March 21st this year! Don't mean to be picky but geez don't add more time to our winter! ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

For anyone who downloaded my Boston Marathon pacing spreadsheet, I have uploaded a revised version at the same location:http://www.box.net/public/75o3rqgty9 I modifed the elevation profile page so it now includes all the pacing information for every mile on the elevation chart (pace, total elapsed time, time of day), plus it shows your 5K and half marathon splits. If needed, this page can now be used as a spectator guide. Greg

Worst. Run. Ever.14 miles this evening in...darkness, harsh wind, rush-hour traffic, on hard, uneven surfaces...and with aching muscles I guess the reality of doing higher-mileage training alone in Winter is finally starting to set in

LJ, I feel your pain bro. Somehow even with the heat it just seemed easier in the late summer/fall.

I can make you feel slightly better....I had to run 9 miles today in cold and harsh winds (not dark though), but the top of my left foot hurt like crazy b/c my new shoes were tied to tight during my last run to get the right fit.....Once I loosened the bad boys up to relieve my foot, my foot was too loose in the shoe....in comes the big nasty blister. Ran the last .6 on my tip toes home! Now I have crazy lower leg soreness due to my tinkerbell sprint home!!! Doesn't sound like a big build-up to my scheduled 17 miler tomorrow!! Ahh, the joys of training! Happy running all!! Edited to add: <whine over, sorry!> [This message has been edited by runninlaw (edited Jan-11-2007).]

this week of training seemed REALLY hard! not sure why....I ran 13 miles last Sun which was my longest run since Chicago Marathon in Oct/06. I'm hoping it gets better. I upped the vitamins. Anyone else think that vitamins do any good? thanks again for that Boston specific pacing chart. It is amazing and I hope to use it on my pace training runs.

one more thing....any thoughts/ideas on predicted weather in Boston in April/07. This will be my first there and I've heard it's been warm the last couple years(?) and with global warming....who knows. I'm in Canada on the east coast and we have yet to see any real snow (which I'm happy about) but which makes me think about spring/summer being warm(er)

sandijam - this past year was pretty good weather (maybe 55-60 degrees, or thereabouts). The previous 3 years were too warm for my taste (70+ with 2004 being 86 degrees). Ya never know

Well, I got 92 miles in this week, which matches the target I'd set for myself, even if I didn't do them in quite the order I'd anticipated. Wednesday night was awful, but the past couple days I've felt amazing. I think that's depended on the weather more than anything.I know that the weather for Boston hasn't been ideal over the past few years, but there's no reason to think that will continue. On average, the weather is slightly on the warm side of excellent. ------------------ My Profile

See y'all there! I've gotten one of those time-waived entries by dint of doing a bunch of volunteering for my Eastern-mass running club (CMS - but most of the Greater Boston clubs get a few..). I finished a 20 mile long run last week in decent shape, and this week I had a 56 mile week without my body breaking down, so my training is going fine. Pretty much following a Daniel's plan, but trying to pick up good ideas from Pfitzinger, cool running, and wherever else I can. I ran Boston in 2004 (qualified at the 2003 Mohawk Hudson river marathon), but I'm coming back from injuries and knew my pace would not support a qualifier - and I really want to run Boston to celebrate turning 50. See y'all out there - I'll be one of the hapless runners back in the last corral with the other invitees, a few yards ahead of the bandits. For those who feel like the invitees are getting away with stuff, I will mention that this year, they are having us pay $200 for the entry fee (250 after March 15), so at least I'll be paying for my share of the gatorade. I'm training as if I'll run 3:45 or so, but I expect to run more like 4 hours, even if the weather is good: celebrate the day, high-five the kids, encourage my fellow runners, and leave something to finish with. -Jim in Acton

OMG, Greg, this is fantastic -- thank you! I've been wondering how to tell family members where and when they might expect me and this is terrific! Thanks again, Mike ------------------ Me

Holy cats, Jim - $250 entry fee?! Wow - make sure they at least give you a shirt that fits right! Plus you have to run UP that hill in Hopkinton before you even get to the start! I believe that's called adding injury to insult!Oh well - you'll enjoy it...and you don't have far to go to get better weather than in 2004...although I do recall newscasters saying "What a glorious day for the Marathon!" That statement would have been true had they said "What a glorious day to go out and WATCH the Marathon!"

If anybody's interested in splitting a room, let me know! Kinda like avis, I'll probably fly in on Sunday morning and out on Monday evening. With a 10am start, 3 1/2 hours to finish is 1:30pm, a few hours to hang out, then looks good to catch a 6:15pm flight out. Those that know the Boston area and airport - do you concur that's a do-able time span? kestrou

kestrou,Depending on what your predicted finish time and travel arrangements are, its propably doable. I'm planning on checking out of the hotel prior to the race and checking in my baggage at the race. After the race, I plan on hopping on the subway to Logan after munching on the post race goodies and grabbing my travel gear from the baggage claim area. I have a 5pm flight to catch so how's that for motivation to finish in a decent time? Even though I hope to finish sub 3, I gave myself a little cushion given I've never run Boston before and heard the race/weather can be a bit unpredictable. I did some research on the subway lines and you can catch the green Line right on Boylston & Arlington (about a 3 minute walk from the finish supposedly). After transferring to the Red line, you hop on the SI1 bus. Total time to Logan is about 45 minutes and $2 in fare. You can go to www.mbta.com and check on the trip planner to get the specifics.

avis,Hit me with an e-mail (my address is in my profile) and we'll take this offline - but I'm likely to rent a car and then we can stash luggage in there. Looking forward to chatting with you and working out a plan so I'm not just "all by myself" at the race - would be great to have a patriot in arms! Also, I've qualified with a 3:18 - hoping to finish in under 3:20 and thus be qualified for the 2008 Boston. kestrou

kestrou, not to de-motivate you or anything, but you just recently ran your BQ, correct? If so, you're also qualified for 2008.

So I'm qualified for both 2007 and 2008?! I didn't realize that - figured that I "got a golden ticket" and could use it either year "in the window" - didn't think that it qualified me to run both years. Thanks for the info - that's cool!!! kestrou

Hey any word on the elite field that will be part of this year's running? The only thing I heard so far was Cheryuiot and Prokopcuka, but any word or rumors on anyone else?

Looking forward to seeing as many cool runners there as possible--any ideas on how to id ourselves? (a blue shoelace in your right shoe, or perhaps there's a secret handshake no one taught me yet? ) In the past, we've met on the grassy knoll, but now there are 2 camps, so last year several of us hooked up at the freedom run the day before--it's just for fun, lots of kids, but a grand way to tour 3 miles of the city on a SUnday morning, with the streets cleared for us.I had a awful long run a few weeks ago--the first 10 miles were ok, but the last 7 or so were horrific--I dragged, the wind was in my face, the hills seemed like mountains and all my winter clothing was a drag, and I was still chilly. Fortunately, I was able to go south a week ago and had a fantastic run. It's amazing how things change when you can run in shorts, a singlet and running shoes. Think of these winter runs as part weight training--you can go so much faster when you ditch the layers, and I'm optimistic we'll be able to do so come April 16th. grins, A

Maybe something like this has been asked earlier in this thread, but I didn't see it. For the Cincy Flying Pig, someone (PacerChris?) linked to an online video tour of the course. Does anyone know if anything like that is available for Boston, either through the BAA or someone unofficial? I didn't see anything like this on the BAA site (I think the Flying Pig site had a link to their video tour). Thanks, Mike
