It seems like I'm usually trying to throw myself into shape on short notice...so I'm trying to reverse that trend. I'm training now for next January. I've never heard of a buildup that long, but I have about 20 lbs to lose and would like to make a crack at a sub-4...on my way to faster perhaps. Had a couple of months of sporadic running due to a mega-blister obtained at my last marathon in late February. The blister is mostly better, nothing left but a sensitive spot on my heel. So in the past couple weeks I've started putting some mileage together again.

Anybody else out there have Phoenix in their sights?

I ran the full in 2006 while my daughter did the half. I think I will do the half in 2007 with her.

I ran the full this year, may do the half in January. DW wants to give the half a crack too.

I've already registered for AZ. Actually, one of my goals for 2007 is to run ALL the Rock N Roll events and get all those additional metals!

BTW: I ran the first one in 2004 and it was a good experience. Lots of activity along the course.

Well...since my long runs are only 8 miles at the moment...I've got a ways to go. But the heel blister seems to be a thing of the past, and hopefully will just continue to get better. I'd like to have a base of 10 or more runs in the 17 mile or longer range for this attempt. I'd also like to sign up, as GArunner has, but am a bit unsure I'm ready to plop down that much cash before I even have plane tickets...so that might have to wait a little while...

I hope it is cool on race day, as I'm running in 60-70 degree weather this past week and it is too hot for me...too many years in Alaska I guess.

It was probably around 40 degrees at the sound of the gun and it probably got up to around 60-65 this year. It was great running weather.

I'm already registered for this one and looking forward to it - it will be my first marathon. We have a second home in Scottsdale (about 4 blocks from the 20-mile marker!) so it will be a convenient one for us, though I hope I don't hit the wall and decide to just run home!

My family appears to be migrating to Phoenix (except for my little branch of the tree...), so it works out for us to go visit siblings, parents, and grandparents there. A fortuitous opportunity...I just happen to think we'll be making the trip when there is a marathon to run! Coincidence? Probably not...

In my long, slow preparation, I didn't get in a long run this past week. My long runs right now are a pitiful 8 miles anyway...but I did run four times today...1.5 miles to work, 3.5 miles at lunch, 2 miles after work with kids on bikes, and one kid wanted to go further so we went another 3.3 miles...not really a long run, but it felt fine and easy. Hopefully I'll get my long runs into the 13 mile range in the next couple weeks.

A bit of a slow week, but did get in some miles. Long run up to 11 miles today, very relaxed and easy despite a ferocious wind (25-30 mph). Does it get windy in Phoenix in January? I'm big enough that it doesn't affect me as much as some other people I run with, but it still makes a difference... I have heard of big dust storms that blow through there, that would certainly rearrange the mindset during a marathon!

No, it generally doesnt get windy here in the Phoenix area in January. Im not saying it cant happen but very rarely do we get cold windy days. Same goes for our dust storms. They primarily happen between June and August. Thats whay the RnR is scheduled when it is, mild weather for everybody to enjoy.

I think I'm planning on running this one -- it will be my second marathon (just ran Grandma's Marathon last weekend). I'll be shooting for a sub 3:40 for a BQ!

As you can tell by my training log...I apparently am not on any plan. Pretty poor for consistency lately, dealing with an unbelievable heel blister that started in February and just won't go away, and allergies and general scheduling problems with work and life in the summer. I hope to run a fall marathon someday, but right now I just can't seem to train very consistently before September, so January is much better for me.

I'd be interested to hear which plan you choose and how it works for you.

for anyone curious about weather, i ran the RNR 1/2 in AZ this past january and it was fabulous. I was wearing a tank top and shorts, and had cheap gloves that i bought from the expo. (an interesting look, but very effective.) Once the gun went off I had them on for a mile or two and then it was just shorts/tank from there on out. Pretty warm!

Doing the full marathon is my goal. I cheered on a friend who did it last year and it got me hooked. I saw the other runners and thought "hey i can do this".

The next cut off for "cheap" registration is in september. Im currently just comming out of PT for an IT band injury. The plan is to slowly build up my miles and see how i feel at the end of next month. wish me luck.

I've alternated the races each year, so this is my year for the full. I live in the area, and the weather's usually great in Jan. I'm mostly hiking this summer because of the heat, but I'm looking forward to getting back into the training.

Trying to keep a bit of running in the crazy summer schedule...it looks now like I will actually be there for this event. I ought to register soon...

Hello to those planning PFChang 2007! New to this forum & posted this race somewhere else, in which someone was kind enough to direct me to this thread. PF Chang is going to be my first marathon. I'm looking @ an 18 week build-up that will start Sept. 1st. Wanted to go in to this with a base of 30 miles a week, but it's gonna be closer to 25. Living here in Gilbert (SE of Phoenix) with the continuous beating of the sun, it has been difficult to go the complete distance for my long runs. The temp.has dropped into 90's from the 115's, but the humidity went up. Killer! For those of you planning to run this, that don't live in the area, the weather in Jan. should be absolutely gorgeous & perfect for a marathon.

Hey everybody....My goal is to run the 1/2 this January. I just started running a few weeks ago, and I'm slowly trying to build miles. I have no aspirations of a good time and right now am just trying to ensure that I finish the 1/2 within the 4-hour time limit.

Thomas....I live in QC and work in Gilbert. Running (even in the mornings) has been brutal, but I had to start.....

Way to go Matt! That's the key, getting started. You have six months. If time (as you said) is not an issue, that goal should be within reach. I only had about the same amount of time in training for the first 1/2 marathon I ran in Dec.2005 and made it. If I can do it, you can too. I only averaged 3 days a week running 14 miles a week. The key (IMHO) is slowly progressing 1 run a week. In the last 6 weeks before the 1/2 mar. I ran 2-10 milers, 1-12 & 1-14. My other 2 runs a week were 2-6 mile runs. You will get the most benefit from the one longer weekly run. BTW I live on Power & Queen Creek and run up Power to Hunt Hwy for my weekly long run. Small world!

Hey..look at all the east valley runners on this site!
I live in Gilbert and have been following a 3 day a week training program for America's Finest City Half Marathon on Aug. 20th in San Diego...first race since my baby girl was born on Jan. 25th, 2006.
I'm glad it's finally cooled off a bit....July was tough when it was 94 at 4:30am!
I'm planning on the Vegas Half and I'm going to volunteer at RNR so I'll be there to cheer ya'll on...I seem to have bad luck every year at PF Changs RNR.
