Alright spinach! Plenty of time, and if you are already putting in a run like that you should have a really good shot at that sub-3. And yes, here's hoping for cool and cloudy. Last February I ran Tampa after coming from a 6 week period of extremely cold weather here in Alaska. Training runs in temperatures well below zero. I found that there were a bunch of folks concerned about the uncharacteristically cold (high 50s and low 60s) weather at Tampa, but it was great for me. ------------------ Troy Running resume My running log

Welcome to Phoenix Spinach -Cool ? Yes. Cloudy? Most likely no. They don't call this "The Valley of Sun" for nothing. Southern AZ averages over 300 days of sunny days a year, so the odds of having a cloudy day on Jan. 14th. isn't all that great. What you can expect is mid to upper 40's @ the race start and the temp. to increase 15 or so degrees by noon. Also, the humidity levels should be low. Around 50% early am. dropping to around 25% later in the pm. Good luck on the sub three!

Yeah I know what it is like out there. I grew up in Scottsdale. I remember the great luck we had when I ran the marathon two years ago. That year it was cloudy and rainy for several days before the race, but on Sunday morning the skies were clear and the sun shone. Then at about noon Sunday the clouds came back, so we just had sun for the race during the week I was out there. One side note about that race. I remember sitting around before the start in my shorts and singlet (it was in the mid 50s, quite comfortable) and I was amused at the heavy coats I saw so many people wearing while waiting. And as I went to the start I was shocked by how many runners were going to wear pants. My goal became nobody in pants was going to beat me. I think I probably made that goal, at least I didn't see anyone in pants beat me. Thinking back to when I was living out there I suppose that I too would have been cold that morning waiting for the race to start. It is amazing what living in Minnesota for 15 years does for your view of what's cold. Good luck all. ------------------ MyUserProfile [This message has been edited by spinach (edited Nov-13-2006).]

I am getting ready for my 2nd full in mid Feb.I did the New Times 10k yesterday. Anyone else in town do it? Good job on that 10K sandert! Had considered it... just too much going on. If the State will give me the 10th of Dec. off, I'm hoping to run the half marathon in Tucson as a training run for PF. I would rather drive up to Vegas that weekend & do that instead, but even getting one day off w/ short notice will be hard. Thanks spinach for the coupon code & saving me ten bucks. I'll buy you beer after the race! Mr procastinator (me) waits until almost the last minute to register. It's not the money... Is there such a thing called "runners remorse?"

Hey Sandert and Spinach! I guess I have also ran with both of you! I ran the Twin Cities marathon again this year and have ran PF the last 3 years. I also sat around looking at the people wearing coats saying it was cold at 50 degrees and I felt like it was warm since I had just left Nebraska at 10 degrees. I'm only running the half but maybe I'll get to see you guys out there. Simon

Guys, we're slipping! We were getting too far down on the page so I had to bump us up a little bit Hey, is anyone doing a race on Thanksgiving? I am doing a little 5 miler, thought it would be something fun to get me out and moving before I go eat. And I'm gonna eat everything, I don't care....sweet potatoes ,stuffing, mashed potatoes, veggies, pumpkin pie, strawberry cake, cranberry sauce...it's gonna be awesome

That is one of the beneifts of running, we don't have to worry about what we eat on Thanksgiving. I only have a couple 5k races coming up before the marathon. I like to run a couple half marathon to 20 mile races in December to help get ready but there aren't any races like that here in Minnesota next month. So I will only do those 5k races. I plan to try to run one of my long runs next month at race pace, but it is hard to motivate myself to push that hard if I don't have a race to help me. I was at the Twin Cities marathon this year, I did the ten miler. Too bad I missed you guys. Eat well next week. ------------------ MyUserProfile

Got my first 20 mile run in 20 years. Feels pretty good. Haven't even figured out what my pace was yet but the watch said 3:27:16. Felt real fresh @13, pleasantly worn out @ 18 & absolutely done @ 20. This run was more of a mental victory for me in that I might actually finish my first marathon.Tom

Go Tom! 20 miles is always a good feeling, you should be in good position to finish comfortably, and have time to rack up some more long ones. Eryn, not too many race options out my way, but I like to get up and run early Thanksgiving morning before sunup...well that's not too early here...and I prefer putting in 8-12 miles, and yes, I also eat EVERYTHING! I enjoy eating and eating and watching others wonder why I don't have to look longingly at the food without putting on 5 lbs... ------------------ Troy Running resume My running log

Yay Tom! Good job! I am scared of 20 myself but, you're right, maybe after I finish my first one I will feel more confident about the marathon. Doing 16 tomorrow and I am scared enough about that. Did 15 last week but was very sore afterward and haven't really had any longer runs this week. We shall see how it goes!!!

Hey Eryn --I'm scared of 20 too, but I've got a couple of weeks before I have to tackle that one, so I'm trying to not think about it. But for my 14-mile run (last Saturday) I tried to think about it as a 6 mile run and two 4 miles. That seemed to help my mental state at least. I'm planning to do the same thing for my 16 tomorrow -- one 8 and two 4s. I guess we'll see how it goes.

You guys are doing great!!! Keep it up!! Tom ....Congrats on the 20-miler!!! It's all downhill from here, right? Still no running for me....PT the past couple of weeks...Knee still isn't quite right...I have to get back out there and run next week, or it isn't even worth it. I figure I'll run/jog/walk/crawl the 1/2 anyway, just b/c I already paid and I have to go down there b/c my buddy is running the marathon. Still, though...I'd love to be able to actually run some/most of it. I'm so jealous of you guys....Hopefull I'll have better news to report next time. Keep on running!!! ------------------ Matt azredbirds

Thanks everyone! Took yesterday off & my quads are still sore today. If I run today it It will be an easy effort. I am now convinced more than ever whoever thought of suggesting doing the "long-long" run every other week once you hit 18 miles, knew what they were talking about. I wish it were downhill from here Matt. If everything goes as planned, two more 20 mile runs are on the roster.

Hey guys! Hope everyone's Turkey Day has been good!!! Mine was nice, had to go to both my family and my boyfriend's so of course we ate too much and were rushed...Did well at my 5-miler today though, finished in exactly 47:30, which is pretty good for me. I usually can't break 10mm, so I felt really good about it! Hope everyone is still injury -free and feeling good!! Talk to you soon!

Eryn, good work! The runs where everything works and I run a little faster feel inspiring. My run today wasn't quite like that... I wanted to get up and run before my family was up so I wasn't deserting my wife for half the day, as sometimes seems to happen (especially with long runs). Alarm went of at 7:00, then 7:07, then 7:14, then 7:21...you get the idea. I got up at 8:00 messed around getting ready, and finally got out the door at 8:45 for an 11 mile run. I used to hate running in the morning, but the past few years I've gotten to like it. But I don't usually do a substantial run without eating and giving myself time to wake up a bit. The exception is my runs to work, but that is 2 miles, which I can endure in most any condition of sleep or preparation. So, I was running pretty slow, temperature was 1 F, but thankfully not much of a breeze. The view was great, as it was after dawn, but the sun didn't come up until I had already covered 7 miles. But at about 6 miles I started wondering whether I was going to need to make a pit stop. It felt a bit like the famous runner's trots were on the way. I've never had trouble with that, but there's a first time for everything. As it was, I was a bit tired, moving sort of slow, and just trying to concentrate on the view. I was glad to get back home, having earned my very ridiculous heaping plate of food at the mid-day celebration. And I feel fine. But I won't be running that far without a bit more time to enter the waking world again. The other thing I did this week is run my long run on Monday (21.2 miles, went fine, just a steady long run) instead of Saturday. I'm taking a couple of Mondays off between now and the marathon so I can run long runs when the rest of my family isn't sitting at home wondering when they'll get to see me. As a result of this week's schedule, I didn't take any days off after the long run. So I might be a bit tired from that. I intend to rest tomorrow, run Saturday, rest Sunday, then a progression long run on Monday. We'll see. It's also supposed to warm up to 30 or so tomorrow and the next day, so we might get some snow. Good preparation for Phoenix. I'll be warm on race day. Anybody tried accelerade? I saw on the marathon website that it is the official drink of the water stops. Just curious, it looks too expensive to try ahead of time so was curious if anybody has experiences to share. Happy training! ------------------ Troy Running resume My running log

My wife couldn't believe I skipped the pumkin pie on Thanksgiving. Thinks I'm nuts...When I told her that for every pound you loose, you gain 2 sec. per mile. She says, "You don't need to loose any weight." No, I don't need to... I want to! I'll spare ya all the rest of that conversation... Troy, some awful cold weather you have up there! It has been very warm here in Phoenix lately. High 70's low 80's...Eryn, everything look ok for meeting your $ goal? Hope so... Looking forward to that half marathon in Tucson in a couple weeks... Guess I'll see what shape I'm in compared to last year. My time was 1:56:something. If I can take off about 5 minutes w/o really having to push it, I'll be extremely happy.

Wonder what happened to some of the other folks who have posted here and are doing the PF? This thread is like down to... maybe 2 1/2 people? Too bad. Hopefully, people are not bailing the run. Maybe things will pick up.

I'm gonna be there. I've already done marathons to finish. I really want to do *better* this time. So, if I can't based on my training, I'll switch to the half. I've been showing some definite improvement. I'm looking forward to the Desert Classic 30K as a barometer of just how much I've improved.Hoping the thread stays alive, Billy

I had a good week last week. I got in 63 miles with a couple long ones, a 19, 17, and 15. The 15 was on Thanksgiving morning and created quite a stir that afternoon when the people I was celebrating with found out about it. That is why I try to keep my running quiet, nonrunners don't seem to understand. I am hoping to get in a couple more 60+ mile weeks in December and I am getting a bit more confident that I have a shot at my goal in Phoenix. The one problem I have in training is that there does not seem to be a race longer than 5k in Minnesota next month, I like to do a couple half marathons or 25k races the month before a marathon as a way to judge my training. Good luck all, let's keep hoping for clouds in Phoenix next January 14. ------------------ MyUserProfile [This message has been edited by spinach (edited Nov-28-2006).]

Good news everyone! I just got all the numbers together today and found out that I have reached my fundraising goal!!! Actually, I am $70 over for a total of $3670!!! I also have some more donations coming, so my total should be even better! Check out my fundraising website to see the end results:http://www.active.com/donate/tntky/erin It also has a picture of me, although not a very good one...running in the rain. I don't think out thread will vanish into internet obscurity...we just have to keep it alive More people will probably start posting as the race draws nearer. I'm glad everyone seems to be doing well so far.. Spinach~you are absolutely inspiring! I can't imagine a 60 mile week, I am struggling to get in 30! Where do you find the time, let alone the energy?!?! You are right though, people who don't run just don't get it....they think 4 miles is a marathon. Tommy~ I didn't know that for every pound you lose you gain 2 seconds...interesting. I only need to lose about 100 pounds!!! Please let us know of your time in the half!! When is it exactly? Billy~Welcome to the thread! Do you live in Phoenix then? I hope you continue to hang around and fill us in on your progress! Talk to all you guys soon, everyone have a great night! Erin
