I also ran the inaugural RnR AZ in 2004. It was a lot of fun. Everything happening helps take your mind off the miles.

This year I'm decided to do all the RnR events so I will get all their Medals for doing doubles, etc. I also want to go to all the post concerts. I just found out Gin Blossoms will be the headliner at AZ. Sounds good!

Visiting family in Phoenix and suffering through some hot weather (they claim it's nice out, but they're lying). Monday, I went for a run up South Mountain, thinking of something in the 10-15 mile range depending on how long it took me to make it to the turnoffs I saw on the map. And, in reality, not knowing what the actual distances were for either option. Since I had run up there a couple times already, I thought I knew what I was doing...but neither of the trails was signed at the junctions with the trail I was on...and I ended up running a full 20 miles (well...according to the usatf mapping site it was 19.9, probably 20 given all the switchbacks). I was well prepared in that I started with 64 ounces of Gatorade and when I descended from the preserve I hooked up with another 32 ounces and a small bag of Doritos. Mmmm...salt! I haven't ever run that far without specifically leaving the house to do so, but it was a relatively pleasant way to end up running that long. Perhaps I can plan to get semi-lost next time around for my long run.

On another positive note, I wasn't due to run a 20 miler for quite some time, but I did and it felt fine. A bit flat at the end, as I was fighting off an incredible urge to walk every 200 yards, but encouraging nonetheless. Next 20 miler is mid-October. I figure having done one this early, I'll put in another one then, and see how it goes. That will be a lot colder...

I've always wondered how I would do in a hot marathon, and after that long run I feel like I could certainly do it. One less weather factor to fret about.

Matt - It seems my run down the wash has become my Monday 4 mile temp run. I wish the pavement continued on. Starting from Power, the turn point is exactly 2 7/8 mile, with the last mark @ 4.0 miles. So I have been using this run to pick-up the pace once a week.I wish the pavement went further. I like running with no stinking cars next to me. Suppose I could do the wash back & forth, back & forth, but it is hard (for me) mentally to run this way. My ideal is always a loop.

Troy- You ran up South Mtn. & ended up turning into a 20 miler? Wow, I'm impressed. With that kind of conditioning, sounds like you could run the marathon next week, and break 3 hrs. to boot!

All- good luck to everyone training for this one. I have been procrastinating signing-up for this for some reason. Perhaps a little trepidation setting in?

Hi Tom,

I have to admit, I figure I could finish a marathon right now. Not necessarily wanting to try it, but I could finish. But don't be impressed into thinking I could actually run fast...just because I am completely inappropriately monikered on here and have little idea where I am going...

I started slow up Mormon Trail, went west on National Trail, and was looking for the Geronimo Trail or the Holbert Trail. Found myself at the Holbert Lookout and finally just decided to run down the road. Which was very nice after all the switchbacks.

But when (actually, a big if) I break 3 hours, I'll certainly celebrate. At this point, my more realistic goal is to break 4 hours (probably realistic, but not a given)...and we'll have to see about that one as well.

Just paid a visit to the PF Chang web site and noticed that there is some sort of pre-race, pre-party this Thurs. the 28th. Said you could register @ a "discount" and have a chance to meet & run w/ Frank Shorter & some guy called the "penguin". Since I missed the (due to procrastination) $90.00 cut-off date, a little discount wouldn't be such a bad idea since they are going to serve pizza & beer as well!

Oh Shoot!! I forgot about the pre-race party....I was going to go to that. Oh well, life goes on I suppose.

I continue to plug along....I had to take about a week and a half off b/c of my back, but I'm back to running my normal distances.

Tom ....Where do you turn around at?

I made a last minute decision and went to the party for the second year in a row. It wasnt bad. This time Frank Shorter started out at the front of the pack so he didnt pass me... that was until he had run the 3 miles and headed back up the canal I didnt bother to get my pic taken with him again this year, once was enough. Saw John "the Penguin" Bingham and said hello to him. Being a slow runner I can relate more to John than I can Frank. Saw some former teamates from TNT and then headed home.

I am so happy to find this thread!!! Phoenix is going to be my first full marathon. I am doing it with TNT which has proved to be really fun.

My biggest fear is that I will not raise all my money though and not be able to go My family hasn't been very helpful AT ALL in giving donations so I am counting on having to do more fundraising type stuff. Anybody got ideas?

I haven't read all the posts yet so this question may have already been answered but...anyone else doing it with TNT? Also, where is everyone from? I'm from Louisville, KY

eryn23

I ran PF Changs this year with TNT. I only had to raise 1500 being that I lived here in the Phoenix area but I set the bar at 3000 which I came within 250 of. I did a letter writing campaign. I sent about 75 letters to family, friends, coworkers and a few business owners I knew. It obviously worked for me. A few of my teamates had poker parties, garage sales and carwashes to try to raise money. Just some ideas that might help you out. Good luck withoyur fundraising, training and running your first marathon.

eryn23,

Sorry I can't help, as I've never worked with any of the charities...good luck.

Today's progress is just that I ran a second 20 mile training run. The good news was that it was less pitiful...no walking breaks needed. It was mostly on our local beach, which is a mix of sand/gravel/cobble/mud depending on which section. Good exercise for lateral motion muscles as well as the straight-ahead ones.

This run also culminated a 50 mile week for me, my first ever. I'd previously run a 47 mile week long ago (I think 4 years ago, but haven't trolled back through my log to check), but have generally not been putting in that kind of mileage. I'm hoping to put 40 miles per week in the bank over the next three months, and see if that helps tune up the aerobic engine. But right now, the only thing I know for sure is that I plan to take tomorrow off entirely!

Happy training!

Ended up missing that wingdig on the 28th. Would have loved getting my pic taken w/ Frank Shorter and had it blown-up to "poster" size.

Matt: Not sure what street that is, above the turn-around, I just go until the pavement ends. My guess is it is Hawes Rd.

Eryn: Welcome & good luck. If you haven't been to AZ in the winter, you are in for a treat.

All: Managed to get only 28 mi. logged last week. I did get in a 16 mi. run though on Thurs. I really need to run more than 3-4 days a week & get going. I am finding it difficult to manage the time it takes to train for a marathon.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Thomas~ I know what you mean, I am having a tough time getting all my runs in. I work and go to school full time, plus I am volunteering on a congressional campaign so...my schedule is PACKED!!! It's impossible to prioritize also b/c everything is high priority! We can do it though, just have to squeeze those runs in somewhere!!!!

Tom Yeah, that's Hawes....Pretty cool tempo run....The fact that I use the same track for a long run is embarrassing...

I am really impressed by how you guys manage to get in all your runs training for a full marathon. I'm only doing the half...I'm up early for morning runs, but they'd obviously need to be longer and I'm not sure I could do that. Maybe someday I'll actually be able to run with speed and the longer distances won't take so long.

Keep running everybody!!!

Eryn: You are making me feel like a slackard! After seeing what you have to pack in a day, guess I can't complain

Matt: I know how you feel. Some of the distances you hear people running may seem intimidating, but trust me, you will progress beyond even what you imagine. I ran (2) 1/2 marathons last year. I didn't train as many miles as most "experts" would have recomended, but I ended up doing better than expected. I'm curious as to what you are doing now, when you started. I remember you saying you were on a Galloway program which I'm not familiar. Perhaps we can "tweak" your training a bit if you want to think about it. Let me know.

Thomas It's sort of Galloway/Higdon....I didn't like the fact that Higdon's program for beginners only had me run 10 miles, but I also didn't like that Galloway's had speed work, etc. in it (I'm just trying to finish, after all). I started back in July....Very slowly. It took a couple of weeks to work up to 2 miles. Anyway....I had to take a couple of weeks off for my back, but this past weekend, I ran 5 miles on my long run. This Sunday I run 6. After that, it's pretty much 1 mile per week increase on the long runs (with some repeat weeks and some stepback weeks thrown in) until I get to 13 two weeks before PF Chang's. Then I taper. During the week, I'm running 3 miles a couple of days and 2 on one day. Next week I increase that a little bit, then a few weeks later a little bit more. Ultimately getting up to 5 miles twice a week, and 3 miles once per week (plus the long run). I'm really open to suggestions, as I've really just kind of combined/tweaked some existing schedules and then added my own stuff in.

Hi all! I haven't signed up yet, but I am already going to be in Phoenix this weekend visiting a friend - so I am seriously considering running the 1/2. I am running my first full in 10 days and think I want to spend the next few months running 1/2s before I get back into running more fulls.

Eryn - I am posting mainly to respond to you. I am getting ready to run the Nike's Women's Marathon in San Fran on 10/22 with TNT. Like you I was worried about raising the full amount and my family gave the least (even though I have a cousin with Leukemia who's recieved a ton of support from LLS - go figure!). To do Nike, we had to raise at least $3600...to date I've raised $5525 with a little more maybe still to come. Like Frankie, I did a letter writing campaign - only I sent out about 400 letters. Yes, buying all the stamps sucked, but it was money WELL spent. I sent letter to everyone locally in my same profession (I'm a Realtor), to everyone I've ever worked with, friends and THEIR family members, businesses I've supported, etc, etc. And do you know what surprised me? The people I most expected to support me donated little if at all and the people I most expected to just throw away my letter donated the most - by a LOT. Moral of the story - send a letter to EVERYONE because you never know who will donate and who's been effected personally by blood cancers. I wish you the best of luck and if I can help in any way - please let me know!

Happy runs all!

Still plugging along...ran 18 today and it wasn't as joyful as I would have liked...I hope to get to the point where long runs don't suck the life out of me like they do presently. But then I would probably just run faster, so maybe it wouldn't help...

Anyway, another long one in the bank and looking for more. We're having unseasonably warm weather, so I was running in 50 degree air today...pretty nice for Alaska in mid-October. After our summer of rain, perhaps it's going to stay the same temperature and rain all winter too...

I keep expecting the weather to be colder, so I carry more clothes than I need. It's supposed to be frosty by now, but we have had only three 'barely' frosts.

Happy training, everyone.

Good luck with your marathon!!! I can't believe you have raised so much money, that's awesome!!! Thanks for the tips too, I know a lot of people make all their money on their letter writing campaign...I just don't know enough people that have the money to donate. I'm a student, am a server. I am still working on it though, have about $1300 so far. We have a group going to San Francisco too, I hope you have a lot of fun!

Matt: Attempted a night run through the wash.I'ts just too dark & kept running off the trail. There sure is a lot of critters out there!

About the only thing I would change would be perhaps to play with the "long" run a bit. Increasing that run (1) mile a week sounds good, but maybe you could try the up/back. Push your run up a little more than two miles for (2) weeks, then drop back a little before pushing up again. This is a little more agressive, but may get you a little more base.

Ran a GREAT 8 miler yesterday in the FREEZING COLD!!! I'm so not ready for winter to be getting be here!! I'm getting so excited to travel to San Fran on Friday and get this marathon done!

Eryn - I completely understand the situation you are in with trying to raise money. But you are doing great if you have $1300 already!!! Another couple ideas that have worked really well for people in my group are boot blocking (where you and couple other stand on at busy intersections wearing TNT stuff asking for donations) and selling mardi gras beads before sporting events while people are tailgating (you can usually get beads on ebay for as little as $.05 - $.10 a strand and can sell this for a $1 or more). I know people who've raised their entire amount doing these or similar ideas. I know it will take more time to do this things and you don't have much free time....but maybe something will work for you. GOOD LUCK!!!

Here we go folks! Only 13 weeks to go...Think I need to get serious... was able to get a 14 & a 16 in the last two weeks in Sept., but only logged 2- 5 er's for a total of 10 miles last week. Ran a 10 last night for my long this week, so this is it for me... if I don't get my long runs logged from here on out, I've got 2 choices... skip the marathon altogether, or, sign-up for the 1/2 marathon. The price goes up to 110 bucks mid Nov., so perhaps I'll see if I can get back on track.

Hope everyone else is on track to run their best marathon ever !

The 14 and the 16 aren't bad, and if you only ran 10 miles last week that can be a helpful break in your buildup...don't quit yet...

Tom Thanks for the suggestion....I'll see how my body handles the longer distances....I ran my 6 yesterday (for the 2nd week in a row) and it went better than last week....I'm supposed to do 7 this week and next for my long runs....Maybe I'll see how good I feel near the end and go farther...

I signed up for the 1/2 last week....Guess I'm committed now....That, or I'm willing to flush some money down the drain...

Matt: You are starting to hit pay dirt. That is, now that the distance of your long run is half the distance of the race, you will find it easier to accomplish even longer runs w/ less effort. Ponder this... going from 2 miles to 4 took a little work, but it wasn't that bad and the distance was doubled!
