Hello savvysmommy- Good luck in San Diego & Las Vegas! I was/have been on pretty much a three day-a-week program since resuming running, & it worked for the 2 - 1/2's, but honestly think I'll have to fit @ least another run or 2 a week to adequately prepare for the 26.2. I know it's often said the only goal for a "first" marathon should be just to finish. I want not only to finish, but hopefully not be a quivering bowl of jello when it's all said and done. You have me a little worried mentioning past trouble @ PF Chang. Is there something I need to be concerned about?

wow 3 east valley runners and me, a far northwest valley runner, cool. As I stated previoulsy, Im shooting for the half in January. I ran this years full as a member of TNT and had a blast. My main goals changed a bit as ITBS set in near the end of my training. But the overall main goal was to finish and that I did. Its a nice course and I highly recommend it.

Probably have made a huge mistake in deviating from the "rule" of the 10% increase for adding miles, Feeling impatient to get started. Jumped up from 20 to 30miles a week and have done 30 two weeks in a row. So far so good. No extra aches or pains. The only thing that "feels" different is being more tired & wish I could get an extra hour of sleep a day.

Biggest mistake isn't whether you follow the 10% rule or not, it's whether you push it too hard and hurt yourself. I have difficulty running regularly in summer because of crazy schedules, so I can't possibly follow many of the training rules in summer without almost starting over. But if I come back from a couple weeks of little running, run hard, and feel tired the next day...I'll just take a couple days off rather than push myself into injury mode. Hoping to pick the training back up now...maybe even today...------------------ Troy Running resume My running log

So does the "10% rule" mean not to increase your weekly miles by more than 10% per week, or does it mean not to increase your long run distance by more than 10% per week? B/C if it's long run distance, you'd never be able to get very far....I'm still plugging along, by the way....I've got a ridiculously long training schedule set up to get me to the HM in January....Hopefully, that will allow me to avoid injury. ------------------ Matt azredbirds

Your weekly mileage. You are only supposed to increase that by no more than 10%. Good luck on your training Matt!

Been hearing about this 10% "rule" for years now, and wonder where this originated from and by whom? For the most part it seems sensible, but I don't necessarily aggree with this theory 100%. Everyone is different. IMHO, the key is listening to your body. Knowing the difference between the normal aches & pains of ones' body adapting & getting stronger, VS aches & pains that lead to injury and not being able to run @ all.TJ

Yeah...I keep waiting for my body to stop hurting, but apparently it's not going to. I guess I shouldn't say it "hurts", b/c it really is just kind of sore and stiff...No sharp pains.------------------ Matt azredbirds

Stiff & sore is ok Matt. It is the sharp pain that tells of bad things to come. Do you have a specific program you are following for the 1/2 in Jan?

Hey, I just joined... and will be running the P.F. Chang's. I'm from Phoenix, live in Tempe right now though and going to ASU. How's everyone liking these clouds lately? I'm loving it... it's been really nice at night, sometimes with even a breeze. Can't wait until it starts really cooling down... running in the summer in Phoenix is not too fun... but you gotta do what you gotta do. ------------------ Mike Running Log Myspace [This message has been edited by mikeymike777 (edited Aug-16-2006).]

Thomas ...I sort of combined/merged Jeff Galloway's and Hal Higdon's novice training programs for the 1/2 marathon b/c I liked/disliked elements of both. I also repeat most weeks, as I have a lot longer to get ready than they had in their training programs. Do you ever run in the Queen Creek Wash? The last couple of Sunday runs, I've done a couple of the sections between Hawes and Power...Two Sundays ago, running from Sossaman to Power, I saw a coyote...Very interesting. Mikey ...Welcome...I've liked the clouds, though it was humid this morning for my 2.5 miler (the rain last night). Herb ...I've got a buddy coming out in January to run the full marathon here because he wants a sub 4:00 time, and he doesn't think he can do it on his home course (Little Rock Marathon...It has a ton of hills). ------------------ Matt azredbirds

Matt: Read a couple of Higdon's books, but not any of Galloway's except for his articles in RW. Higdon is pretty conservative on training so you should progress rather nicely. Actually, I don't know of the "wash" you are talking about? Have to find it. Getting a little tired of running up Power, the traffic is getting unbearable. Sometimes I'll run West on Queen Creek to Higley & go north to Hunt Hyway, but that is also very busy. Just got back from spending a week in San Diego - boy was that a treat! Running in the am before the marine cloud layer burns off. Mid 60's. What a difference 40 degrees make on the running effort & performance!

I usually have trouble in summer, but finally managed to string together 6 straight days running this week. Taking today off and then going for a moderately long run tomorrow. Now if I can just maintain a schedule and watch my weight...I'd really like to have a shot at 4 hours myself in January. We'll see...------------------ Troy Running resume My running log

Maybe it's my age. Maybe it's my committment...Both? I have to muster all of my effort to get in enough time "in the shoes" to do this marathon... especially if breaking the 4 hr. goal is to become a reality. Running 4 days a week seems to be all I can do. Am logging 30 miles a week though. Sept. 1st is when my official-marathon-training begins. There just ain't no way I'm going to expect to peak out @ 60 miles a week unless I can find a way to add another day (or two) to the program

Got in a good 4 this weekend...First time I ever ran that far....I know people do that for a warm-up, but I'm getting there. Thomas ...The Queen Creek Wash looks like dry river bed...It runs East/West between Hawes and Power...Technically it's a lot longer than that, but the paved running/walking trail is between Hawes and Power. You can enter off of Hawes, Sossaman (to go either direction) or Power. There is a bridge on Sossaman just south of Queen Creek...That bridge goes over the Wash and the "entrances" are at the south end of the bridge. From what I can tell (according to Google Earth)...Hawes to Sossaman is 1.3 miles (it runs almost in a diagonal direction) and Sossaman to Power is almost exactly 1 mile (it's almost perfectly straight). ------------------ Matt azredbirds

Thanks Matt. I'll have to explore the wash. I don't mind if the pavement runs out... actually prefer the trail surface. Believe it or not... that 4 mile run you just did will turn into 8 in 4-6 weeks & it will feel like you did a 4. Trust me.

Found the wash Matt. Great run! Way better than playing dodge car. I kept going past where the pavement ended. About a mile or so running in the wash I stumbled upon, what appears to be 6 or so illegal hispanics making the trees and bushes their home. They seemed a little surprised at my presence, but were not unfriendly. Don't exactly know how far I exactly ran once the pavement ended. Thanks again for telling me about that trail, I'm going to use it often. Tom

Hi all. I registered for this race. It will be my second full marathon. I'm recovering from a torn soleus muscle, but it should be fine by then. I'd like to make a wonderful spoil-me weekend out of it. If you could stay in any hotel you wanted over the weekend (without kids), where would you stay? Why? Thanks!

Tom I'm glad you found the wash trail and that you liked it. I had heard about the illegals living down in that part of the wash, but had no idea they were still there....That was about a year ago, and I have never run past where the pavement ends. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime. I run 5 tomorrow, and I think I'll run the length of it between Hawes and Power as part of the 5. AggieK Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the marathon. The Phoenecian is a very nice resort. If you're looking for other options in the same general area, The Arizona Biltmore is pretty nice and has a lot of history attached to it (Frank Lloyd Wright designed it, presidents have stayed there, yadda, yadda). Whatever floats your boat. http://www.arizonabiltmore.com/ As for me...I'm still plugging along. I actually skipped a run this week (just a 2-miler) b/c my legs felt weird and I wanted to give them an extra day of rest. My back hurts right now, but I don't think it's running related (I was putting seats in the back of my SUV yesterday and I think I might have pulled something).
Good runs everybody!! ------------------ Matt azredbirds

Well...I registered...guess I better keep putting in miles...I've been visiting in Phoenix this past week, and all I can say is thank goodness the race is not this month. Painfully hot. I ran 11 a couple days ago with a backpack that had two frozen and two refrigerated Gatorades in it. That was a pretty slick deal, it really did work. Not perfect or anything, but it certainly helped. Lost a bit of skin where one of the straps rubbed though, a little tough wearing a backpack with no shirt. Tomorrow will be another test in how to solve the heat puzzle. Too bad I don't wake up at 3 am and run, it probably wouldn't be too bad then. But I don't function well at that time of day... ------------------ Troy Running resume My running log
