Mike, Congratulations on your winning Hogku. I submitted several, and am still hopeful for mine since you just got your letter on the 28th. Maybe there's still a chance! PacerChris and crunningman, thanks for the info on biking spectators. My DH loves biking, now only if the hotel has a place for him to store it (in the room????), since he doesn't want to leave it on the rack on the car. Good luck you guys. This is my first marathon and I'm VERY nervous.

One week to go! As I'm double reading the HM course description, printing maps, and making notes, I wonder what really lies ahead for a first-time Pig runner between miles 5 and 8.

I hope the hill training I did made me strong enough not to waiver as I climb the steepest parts, gave me the endurance to quickly regain speed as I crest each hill, and instilled in me the confidence to let go and be light on my feet during the downhills. I'm hoping for good weather and a good time for the racers and spectators. But mostly I hope to finish proud, get a good running photo (for once), and have an ice cold beer and laugh with my running buddies at the end.

Here's to achieving a great race!

1 WEEEK, 1 WEEK, 1 WEEK TO GO!!!!!

I don't put too much stock in weather forecasts 7 days ahead but.....Temp in mid 40's at the start of the race, high of 72F and......scattered showers. Stay tuned. That could change.

Another thing to point out is that sunrise is around 6:30am
And the race starts at 6am. So be prepared to be "in the dark" for the first few miles.

Well said Marlene!.....and I have the feeling you'll be ready for those hills. Just remember in running the half, you'll be running downhill after mile 9.

Thanks FlyingFinn. I had fun coming up with them.

Here's a few that ended up on the cutting room floor. I'm saving a couple of the better ones just in case they have this contest again next year Enjoy!

Here's an example of the fine medal that will be awaiting you at the finish line.

Medals for half and relay have the same design but are smaller and have different color neck ribbons.

Weather update - looks SWEET. 68 as a high and Sunny...with the early start, I doubt it will be much higher than 60, maybe 65 by the time most people finish. Of course, I recall a thread started a while ago about someone with horrible luck this year bringing crappy weather to all his marathons, and he was planning on running the Pig. I guess it may change still but nice to see it looks good for Sunday.

Remember everyone - the only thing you can do this week is completely screw up your race - run a few easy times to keep your legs loose, drink enough, try to get some sleep since you won't sleep well (or long) on Sat night. No trying to squeeze in a few hard sessions at the track to make sure you're sharp - if you haven't done it already, it won't do much good this week!

Anyone looking to hook up with the 3:30 pace group? I checked last year's results and there were over 100 people within 60 seconds of 3:30, so they might have had a huge group last year.

Pacer Chris, DanQ, or any other Cinci Cool Runners:

Are there any changes to the course from 2005?

I had read earlier in the thread that there was maybe a change. From the website, it does not appear to be.

5 days to go!! Weather looks great, so far.

Hope to see lots of people in the 3:10 group!

Hey Chris,
I wanted to congrats you again on your fine finish at Boston. I ran myself. I also paced the 3:20 group @ Kentucky Derby Marathon Saturday.

Haven't decided yet, but if I run this one I may go out with the 3:10 group. Ran the race in 2005 and liked the course alot.

Looking forward for my 3rd HM and 1'st Pig! I don't feel quite ready as some sickness along with a vacation and track training has kept me from getting in a good long run in a while, but I should survive.

What's the registration like this year? I had read it was up in Feburary from the same point in '05, but any updated numbers?

Thanks - it was a great day! Hope to see you this Sunday.

How was KY Derby? My buddy was supposed to run with the 3:20 group but had a death in the family and couldn't make the race. I've wanted to run that race, but since it comes between Boston and the Pig I haven't done it yet (plus I'm currently on vacation in Arizona right now!)

Here is my race report: http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/008501.shtml

Some good hills mixed into this course at the front and 16-18. I didn't find the course that challenging though.
Where in AZ?

Craig,

I'm in Scottsdale - my wife is an accountant and she audits the Sanctuary at Camelback Mountain every year right after Boston. It's a pretty sweet place - no celebrity sightings this year but last year Gene Hackman and Britney Spears were here (not together, though - K Fed was here too but he is most definitely not a celeb in my book...Britney used to be hot, now she's just interesting to read about!)

Now isn't that something. My wife and I "had" a tripped planned to Scottsdale right after Boston. We cancelled it to go to Naples, FL instead.
Not sure what Britney was thinking when she picked this guy up. Looks she might be working on #2 with him as well. He sure hit the jackpot$$$$$$$$ didn't he.

The only change I know about is the order in which we run the bridges. They have been reversed from last year. We now run the Taylor Southgate bridge into Ky and the Clay Wade Bailey back into Ohio.

You must be thinking of 2004. I ran the first leg of the relay in 2005. Look at this photo from last year. That's me nearest the camera running out of downtown (if running the tangents, run left of center on this bridge.)

Yes, Yes! You're right Mike....OK new rule for myself. Anyone who asks anything about the course or these bridges....I won't post a response!!!

I guess that's what comes from running this race every year....the years blend together into one big blur.....

At least I've never gotten lost on this course....yet

DanQ.

It might be best of you employ a strategy of waiting till you see the finish line before you kick it in for the victory and just follow a few people - that way you won't get lost!

... Fortunately, in the past, there's always been people ahead of me.

Belated congratulations to you Chris on running an excellent Boston Marathon!

The signs are up along the route!

As of this morning, hundreds of pink signs have been placed in grassy areas along the course. This should make it easy for those of you from out of town to preview the course.

Only 3 days and a wake up!

PacerChris:

I have a question that occurred to me but I dismissed as a no-brainer until someone (Spareribs?) pointed out that he saw it happen in a race. The instructions you guys get from the pace group coordinator(s) at the Flying Pig do point out that you're pacing your groups according to "chip" time (i.e., not starting your watch until you pass the start line and pacing according to that, not any course clocks) and not gun time, right? I wouldn't want to be in a pace group whose pacer is trying to catch up to the gun time/course clocks.

Thanks,
Mike

MikeBro,

Chip time is what counts so that's what we pace off. Of course, that might be an issue if someone starts well in front of the group - their chip time may be off versus the rest of the group. However, in a smallish race like the Pig there won't be much difference, and most pacers typically target slightly (a minute or less) than the target time to give folks a little bit of cushion the last few miles.

If you're joining me, I plan to be pretty far up to the front of the starting corral anyway so chip vs gun time won't be too different. 3:10 last year would place you right around 100th, so I won't be very far at all from the start line.

See you Sun (if not at the expo).

That's also why I use a pace group. Not for motivation or to run a steady race, but simply so I don't stray off the course.
