Okay, I just mailed in my registration--last day for price break of $65. So now I'm in!

I ran this race last year as my PR and BQ marathon! This year, I'll pace a training buddie to hopefully a sub-3:20.

Comments from previous posts:

- regarding bikes, Biking is a great way to view a marathon! But generally, if you are in the money (top prize winners) it is frowned upon to receive outside assistance from anyone other than official aid stations. (USATF sanctioned, etc.) But, if you are not in that category, then a little assistance from your crew such as fluids and/or a energy drink along the way is not a bad idea.

As for biking, yes I've crewed on my bike at both Cleveland and Columbus for the past couple years. The best thing to do (as well as not violate any rules) is to bike on parallel streets and not along the race course. Find a spot ahead of your runner, park the bike, and stand on the side and wait for your runner. There is no rules broken by doing this. I would, however, contest that riding along with your runner and providing assistance (I.e. fluids, electrolytes, energy drinks, etc) is an unfair advantage and may be considered a rules violation.

Here what i did a Columbus last year. I played leap frog with the 5 runners I was crewing for (all ran between 3:04 and 3:17.) I'd pedal ahead, park, and stand on the side until the last runner went by, then pedaled ahead to the next spot.

Biking is a great way to view a marathon!

One month. How are we all doing?

Anyone doing the 5k and/or 10k on Saturday in addition to the full or half on Sunday? Instead of?

I believe they also have a Pump & Run 5k on Sat...not that I'm into lifting anything more than 12 ounces at a time, but that's another option for you. I might jump into either the 5k or 10k depending on when I need to be at the Expo (for Clif Bar) and when the Piglet race is...my daughter has a little streak going at the Piglet so I'd hate to break that for her! Got to get them started early!

srlopez - I'll find out when I'm working the Clif Bar pace team booth and let you know. I'm curious to talk to you and see how you can a) run all those marathons, and b) afford to travel to them all! I'm also toying with the idea of the Germany to France marathon, but that's a pretty low likelihood...have you done that one before?

I'm only running the 5k. This will be my first ever race and I only really started running about 2 months ago. When i started running I weighed 270, I have lost 8-10 since then. I would be disappointed if I ran slower than 12:00 min/mile pace. Good luck to everyone else who is running.

Hi, I'll be running the HM on the Sunday (my first). Someone on the earlier pages was saying that they will be a pacer.... How does that work? Do people group together at the start according to time?

I'm getting quite excited - although a bit worried about my knee (sore from mild ITB inflamation).

Sparky,
I'm a pacer for the full marathon (3:10 group/7:15 pace per mile) - there aren't pacers for the half, but since the two races start at the same time (I believe) and follow the same course to about mile 7-8, you could connect with the pace group corresponding with you half time (example - 4 hour group if you're shooting for a 2 hour finish) until your turnaround point. Also - at the Expo be sure to stop by the Clif Bar Pace Team booth and pick up a pace band that will show you what your splits should be depending on your target time. You can sign up online at www.clifbar.com as well.

Good luck, and see you at the Pig!

I'm signed up for the half. I'm not old enough for the full and even if I was I don't know if I'm crazy enough to go twice the distance. This will be my 3rd HM but first in my home state of Ohio.

Good luck zsmith! I'll think you'll enjoy the Pig and maybe one day you'll be crazy enough to try 26.2.

Well I've got my mom trying to do a marathon in every state, so I'm sure someday I'll get sucked into the marathon fever.

Anyone know of a pacing team for those that run faster than 3:10? I want to run a sub-3 so I need a pace team of 2:55 - 3:00.

Andy,

Haven't seen even a 3:00 pace team. My suggestion: Get a sign on a stick, write "2:55-3:00 Pace" on it in marker, then walk around before the start holding it up. You will likely gather a group hoping to hit that pace. Ditch the sign when you have a group big enough for you.

FWIW,
Mike

Hey, I have another question. If you read this course description (which is great and very informative, BTW):
http://www.flyingpigmarathon.com/race_information/course/
(Edit: You have to scroll down until you see the heading "Flying Pig Course Tour by Brian Nash" to see the text to which I'm referring.)

while you're looking at the official course map here:
http://www.flyingpigmarathon.com/race_information/course/06zone_1.pdf

I believe they contradict each other in the first few miles. The text in Part I of the course description has you going over the Clay Wade Bailey bridge first then coming back to Ohio over the Taylor-Southgate bridge, while the course indications on the map say exactly the opposite (TS first, then back over CWB). Does anyone know which is correct? I'm assuming the map is (plus there's a really terse description above the course tour text that also goes along with the map indications). It doesn't make much of a difference, as you have to cross both bridges either way, but it's just been bugging me.

Thanks,
Mike

You are right about the zone map. They have the arrows going the wrong way. I can see how that would cause confusion.

The course description is correct. You first go over the Clay Wade Bailey and back the Taylor Southgate.

Andyman,

If you're looking to run sub 3 hours, there won't be too many people with you, but you might connect with a few folks. There is no official pace team going 3 hours, though - 3:10 is the fastest.

OK, so when you make the turn off Mehring Way onto PR Way, instead of going left and across the TS bridge, you turn right and head along 3rd St to eventually go over the CWB bridge? And the mile markers shown on the map for miles 2, 3, and 4 are placed incorrectly? No biggie, I guess, but interesting.

Uh....Mike?....I'm more than a little embarrassed.

Apparently there has been a course change. In the past, we always crossed into Kentucky via the CWB and back to Ohio over the Taylor Southgate. When I read the course description, that was still how they had it. I assumed the map was wrong.

But now.....I see that they've changed the course description to match what the map shows.

Why they changed this, I'm not sure, but thanks so much for pointing that out for me, Mike! I otherwise might have been a little surprised on race day.

I wonder why the race director has not mentioned this in these daily e-mails I'm getting? (or maybe it was and I missed that too?)

Suddenly, I'm feeling a little old and forgetful.

Sorry for the confusion I caused...

Heh, no problem. It was a silly thing for me to worry/wonder about anyway, as we have to cross both bridges in the first 3 miles or so regardless of which way we go. Just glad to see they've gotten the description to match the map. Thanks, Mike

2 weeks to go and I'm getting pumped, I ran this race last year, it was my first marathon and it was great, very well done. I also ran a negative split of 1:31:53 and finished at 2:59:31 and I really enjoyed the experience.

This year I'm hoping to do even better but mainly I want to BQ again, if I do I want pass up Boston again, I'll be there in 2007.

Those folks doing there first Pig will be very pleased, I had a ball and can't wait to do it again.

The course looks the same this year as what it was last year.

The year before that, the bridges were in reverse order.

Anyhow, this should be a fun piggie for me. I've been sick for pretty much the last month and have really been limping to the end of training. My last good weekend of training was at the beginning of April. I ran a half marathon in 1:34... and, then followed up the next day with a 20 miler at about 8:10 /mile or so...

Life has gotten rough since then... I've been hit twice bad with illness... and, my runs have gone down hill (10 miles in 1:27 just a week ago... and, failure to complete my 20 miler the next day... got a slow 18 in instead).

So, today... for the first time... I'm starting to feel good again. *sigh*

10 more days!

Actually, I was feeling creative and sent in my entry a few days before the deadline. I received a letter from the Flying Pig folks yesterday. As it turns out, mine was one of three selected from the adult division! They said the response was great. I'd be interested to see some of the other entries.

Apparently they will be placing the Hogkus along the course. I would imagine they'd be in the Burma-shave format; one line per staggered sign. Mine will probably be between miles 5 and 8 since it has a "hill climb" theme.

On a separate note, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in mid-March. Training took a big hit and I'm out of the full. I was able to put in a 14 miler a couple of weeks ago and decided that I could still do the half. I officially made the switch last week.

Relax and enjoy your last taper week. Nothing to do but stay healthy at this point.

Good luck with the race. I'll see you at the start line in just over a week!

Mike

Congratulations Mike...that is so cool!

I'll make sure to check out your award winning Hogku.

....I am sorry to hear about your injury but I'm glad you are able to do the half.

Good luck!

Mike,
I'll be looking for your Hogku also. I had one ready but never submitted it in time.
Glad you're able to do the half. I'll do it also (Marj, my wife, is doing the full m.).

I'm going to miss it this year and I hate that! Too many other things that have to get done around here instead. The last two years I did the 5K, 10K, one half of the marathon, and last year one fourth of the relay. So I've covered most of the territory at the Pig! It's a great experience. Anyone getting the chance to run at the Pig should do so. It's a blast!
