I plan to do the Flying Pig for my first marathon. My friend has run it several times and she loved it. I haven't registered yet. I live in northeast Ohio so this will be relatively close to home, and looks like a fun marathon.

FlyingFinn, it is a fun marathon. I think you'll enjoy it. The Pig was my first marathon too.If you have any questions, feel free to ask our panel of "Pig experts" here. I put that in quotations only in regards to myself. ------------------ DanQ

I think I'll be there....either trying to BQ or as a training run for an attempt at Cleveland. They are only 2 weeks apart this year though So if I am going to run fast in cleveland I will have to maybe just do the flying pig half...... Anyone ever BQ or set a PR here?
I used to run Pittsburgh,.and wasnt bothered by the hills there... anyone who has done both have an opinion on how this compares to the now defunct Pittsburgh Marathon?

I did the old Pittsburgh course where it finished at the Point, not the one where you finished in Heinz Field. I think the Pig is less hilly than that course - the bridges are about the same, but the hill up to Eden Park isn't as bad as the one that was around mile 11 or 12 in Pittsburgh. If you handled Pittsburgh well, you'll do just fine in the 'Nati.------------------ Pacer Dude

Thanks Chris that is great to hear. Sometimes I think the hills actually help me. Maybe I will go for it and skip the Mistake by the Lake all together..... It seems the Pig is way more fun....

So excited! Just signed up for a bus trip from Pittsburgh to the Pig! It is so nice to not have to worry about travel logistics.

Airport options - closest is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Dayton is probably 60-75 minutes away, and Louisville and Columbus are both probably 2 hours away. Cincinnati is expensive to fly into but lots of options. Dayton is pretty reasonable and not far away.------------------ Pacer Dude

Hi everyone. I echo everyone's comments on how well organized and fun this race is. The 1/2 mile markers for the first 2-3 miles were an outstanding touch by the race organizers. They got me on pace quickly.Pacer Chris' comments seem to be right on the mark. Last year was my first Pig. I had trained well and was shooting for a 3:10 at the Athens marathon on 4/10/05. That day was super hot and it turned into a training run after 18 miles. Then I turned it around 3 weeks later for the Pig. 3:10 pace is 7:15 per mile. My strategy was to run 7:30 pace for the first 10 miles, or 75 minutes. I would reassess my race situation after 10 miles. To give a perspective on the effect of the early hills, miles 6-9, I pasted my splits below. I hope this paints a picture for those trying to do well here. The result was a 2 minute negative split. While I did not run with the pacers, the 3:10 group left me behind in mile 1 and I did not catch up with them until mile 17. I ran my own race for the first half. Then at mile 17 I ran right by the group of about 10-15 in a pack and never looked back. This is where I met our own crunningman. He noticed my Vertical Runner shirt (Hudson, OH) and we struck up a conversation from miles 17-20. Then he left me in the dust. Good luck everyone. Hope to be there again this year (after Boston!) 3 Months to go!....I hope everybody's training is going OK.And I've also PR'd at the Pig a few times. Considering the fact that out of the 13 marathons I've run, 7 were Flying Pigs, that's not too surprising, I suppose.

OK I have done some more reading about the course... I have heard from others that the real hills are over by mile 9.... and it is easy to run a negative split- seems that way from reading above posts too... anyone else agree?Sounds like a great course for me.... I think I will try to BQ here....

You are correct on both points, IMHO. I actually think the hills in the beginning help to keep you focused.

I'm another with a Pig BQ/PR. My first Pig was in '03 and I too have mixed feelings about the course change. Getting out to Mariemont is nice but Eastern Ave. can be a lonesome challenge. PacerChris - It looks like I'll be running with you this year. I'm hoping to get into the competitive start corral at Chicago this fall. I was convinced of running with a pace group after listening to Phedippidations - a running podcast...check out episode 30 if you get a chance. DanQ - That looks like the '03 medal if I'm not mistaken. I love the "Run like the wind. Sweat like a pig." slogan! If anyone is using Google Earth and wants a virtual tour of the course, I have posted one on Google Earth Hacks - http://www.googleearthhacks.com/dlcat60/Marathon-Courses.htm Just dowload the file, open in GE, select the course path and then hit the "Play Tour" button. Don't forget to turn on the buildings downtown. This should give you a better representation of the elevation changes as compared to a compressed elevation chart. Good luck with your training! ------------------ Stats

I think that you will like the course change in that you don't have to run the bridges at the end. Those "bridge hills" seem a lot easier in the early part of the race. And....you are correct about the medal. That was the '03 medal! That's the medal that's featured on the Pig website. Last year's medal featured the Pig flying over the Suspension Bridge. The Suspension Bridge was the prototype for the Brookyln Bridge.

Btw - I tell everyone I know that Skyline/Gold Star (Dixie if your local) is the best running fuel going (lite cheese please)

RKTekt, Your times are pretty close to mine and some guys I train with - let me know if you're interested in hooking up for some long runs and possibly some track workouts or races (misery loves company). Not sure what part of the Nati you live in, but we do a lot of our long runs in Indian Hill and also along the Pig course. I train with 2 guys who are 3:20ish marathoners and another who's looking to run 3:10 at the Pig (his current PR is 3:11 so he's knocking on the door). For those who opt for Skyline or Gold Star as pre-race fuel - please make sure you and your butt blasts are BEHIND me...it's bad enough running behind people who are sweaty and stinky and passing a spectator puffing on a stogie, but do we really need to smell your gas?! ------------------ Pacer Dude

And then During the Cleveland Marathon, around the 10 mile mark, Lloyd sneaks up on me on his bike and we meet again. We would see each other once more in the early summer at the Mohican Trail races. Small world this running community. We hope to run together again in June. And we'll both be running Boston Maybe I'll do the Pig again as well. Later, CR

Speaking of Cincinnati chili... can someone recommend an eatery near the race that serves it up? My DH gawked the first time he made chili and my first reply was "where's the spaghetti?" I grew up in Louisville and never knew people ate chili without noodles in it for like 30 years!Oh, and he always makes spaghetti for the chili now. Marlene
