I flew into Seattle and met Dave at the airport. We took the bus to the expo where we met the gorgeous Mariposai and Evanflein. They are both smart, very positive, strong women. We went back to their hotel for some wine and laughter and to grab Mr. Mariposai, and then we all walked to the restaurant. What a loooooong table full of skinny drinking people,,must be boomers I thought. As we got closer I saw Dove and her guy, Soundie and her guy, Rasmussenmp and his wife, (recognized him from pics). Lapeteus and Enkie were seated and I did not know them yet...(very nice people.) Econo and I saw eachother right away and we both waved furiously to eachother...I saw and recognized DH beside her and mouthed the name Dark Horse? She nodded. Tet came towards me next with gigantic hugs and kisses...telling me how happy he was that everyone had come and I said "how could we miss celebrating your 100th marathon?" He was so happy! He wanted me to sit right beside him as he showed me some photo's of previous races and introduced me to his Tri-friend, seated next to him. On my other side sat Dark Horse, I discovered that he is a really nice guy, kinda strange when he asked me to punch him in the gut though. Dinner was yummy, drinks flowed, laughs and chatter..I missed Dave though, he was seated at the far end of the table. He made up for the time apart when he grabbed me and led me away from the table and down the hall...(sorry about the display Soundie). Later we decided it must have been a conspiracy of DH's and Tet's to have me seated scrunched in between them. Enough about the dinner..on to the race. Factoids>>> Perfect running weather....great support and aid stations, stunning scenery, loved this marathon...did I mention the perfect running weather? Strange but true. I will be quick about this 'cause there's not much to tell. I had a bad knee going into this race and I knew I should take it slow. I admit I was also still tired from the Harpeth Hills Monkey Marathon last weekend. I started out faster than I should have and the knee started aching. When I slowed down it was tolerable. I also had a really annoying stomach cramp for the entire race for the SECOND year here . Finishing time: 4:55.....acceptable for a jog in the park on a gorgeous day. The great thing about being the last boomer finisher is everyone is already there with hugs and cheers! Had a great weekend with old and new boomer friends! Thanks for reading, arf

Thanks for this race report. You had far more patience with the seating arrangement than I think I would have had. You have to be a good sport. Glad you was able to make up for lost time. I noted your knee problems mainly because I have had a nagging little soreness in that area over the last few weeks. My thought is a need to rest mine. Maybe you do too? I know you have put in mega miles on those knees over the last little while. It is always fun to see your race reports. Congratulations on the finish with the knee problem. ------------------ vista129

If the Boomer meetings get any larger, you're going to need name cards! Congrats on toughing out the marathon despite a bad knee and stomach cramps. PJ

Great effort, Arf, and I hope that you didn't slow your recovery too much. That gathering must really have been something, but having one long table can really isolate people. Maybe next time you guys will have to reserve a whole room somewhere so you can mingle more easily.Good luck in your next ultra, wherever and whenever it may be! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Lovely Arf, it was so nice to finally meet you!! What a fun weekend, and I'm glad you were able to finish, as per our discussion on the dreaded DNF... You and I are so alike in so many aspects, I found that really fun to learn. So rest that knee and come back to conquer, ok? Looking forward to a few meet-ups in 2008!!------------------ evanflein

Arf, I've been waiting for your report. Mr. Dove and I waited around to see you come in, but somehow missed it. We saw Tet come in and finish his 100th, but by the time we climbed off the bleachers, he was gone. It's easy to loose people at the finish line in Seattle with the way the recovery area is set up, especially if some people go inside and others stay on the football field. It was nice to see you again. I've got a few possibilities in mind for that 24 hour race (or more likely 12 hour race for me). I'll email you later with some ideas. -Dove

Arf loved your RR! What a sneaky, smart strategy to come in last Boomer to maximize on the hugs ... or was it ... "I was also still tired from the Harpeth Hills Monkey Marathon last weekend"... . and the bum knee!Another one down! You're awesome! Steve

Arf, it was great to see you. I only wish each time I did we had more time to spend together. Hopefully, in the New Year. I will do some scheming how to distract that one groupie of yours who hangs out at restrooms. What's his deal anyway? I would definitely agree that was an impressive "jog" in the park on a beautiful Seattle day in late fall. Tummy cramps? You ate the same thing I had for dinner. It was pretty darn rich cream sauce and I had to stop less than halfway through -- a rarity. Just ask Econo. (btw, a wee clarification. That wasn't "my guy." Just a good runner friend.) Arf, I am glad you balanced out Dark Horse's account of the dinner.I enjoyed meeting the Ultra-Goddess herself, in person, after being amazed at your accomplishments from afar. Sorry you had a stomach cramp like that, but its good to hear you finished among lots of hugs. Anytime you feel like sending more of that Laura Secord my way.....don't hesitate, it was great. enkie

Great RR. It sounds like the actual race was perhaps not the high point of the weekend. Everyone comments on how nice DH is; I wonder why. {{{{{{arf's knee}}}}}}------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

Ultra-diva Arf, I'm so sorry that your stomach was bothering you again this year! grrrr. Oh, but it was fun to see you! I did break into the chocolate rather quickly, but I savored it and ate the last just this morning. [subliminal]&&&eugene&&&marathon&&&[/subliminal]

Congrats on completing a beautiful run in the park. It was a lovely day. Sorry to hear about your sore knees and tummy issues. I sure enjoyed my run in the park even with my issues. Rest up, heal up and be careful on the snow and ice this winter. Hopefully it won't be as long before we meet again. I agree with you on your suggested dinner plans. ------------------ Good running!!! Mike's Profile

Dear gorgeous ultra queen, your presence in Seattle was one of the highlights of my weekend. It was so great to finally have met you in person, since deep in my heart I feel that I have always known you.You must be as strong as you are beautiful since you ran with the knee and tummy pain and still ran it faster than some of us can do with perfectly good conditions. I hope that 2008 will give us more chances to meet up.

What a great weekend all the boomers at Seattle had. You sure did well considering a marathon the week before, a questionable knee, and an uncooperative stomach. It sounds like a good time for all.TomS ------------------ My Profile

arf - As you know, I did two 50k's more than 20 years ago and never expected any more until being inspired by your ultra-tales and meeting you at last year's rainathon at mile 14 (my mile 11) of the out-and-back. When I caught up to you at the same mile 14 to run together for a while in your difficulty this year, I wanted you to quit but it turned out that your slowed pace and abbreviated strides to avert any injury became a lesson for me to apply just a mile later. Please add me to the list or boomers who want to run an ultra with you, . . . and the longer the better. Thank you for the good luck pins and your mile 14 smile making this 100 so special.
