First things first. I need to humbly apologize to my WIFE for telling her to expect me to finish between 8:45 and 9:15...most likely around 8:55.Ummm...... OOOPS Sorry dear... Since my estimated finish was ~2:20...that would put me in around 9:55 I have no idea how I made that mistake Anyways she starts panicking and trying to talk to race officials since I'm like an hour late, but of course no one could tell her anything. OK I admit I'm a dork. Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled Race Report. Last night was exciting at the Pinkish Doorish dinner. We had a Masters Ironman Champion, a centennial barefooter, and the to everyone's surprise we had one of America's finest. Good food and drink was had by all. I was originally going to name this post "Seattle Half Rainathon...NOT" It was completely gorgeous if not a little chilly,. I would have liked it about 5 degrees warmer but that's about it. Completely clear, and no breeze to speak of. Fashion report: Blue Nike sphere-dry T under a North Face WindWall jacket, blue nike shorts, nike visor, NB 857, Garmin 305 Black hat and gloves for warmup miles BTW the finisher medal is prophetic...the sun rising behind the Space Needle. That's what I saw walking from my car. This morning I was up around 4:30, unable to sleep. Last year I barely made the start of the race, so this time I was determined to get there on time. This year, there's no traffic at all, and I park down near the Key. There was a permanent potty down there, but when a couple runners starting using it, this homeless guy starts telling everyone to get lost, because it's a homeless potty. Whatever I'm there a whole hour early this time. I go find the main potties, then come back to the car to relax. Of course I have to go again right before the start. I go with less than 60 seconds before the gun. "Crap in 60 seconds". Well the gun goes off. I see the 2:20 pacer. I'm thinking that 2:20 is more realistic for me that the 2:18 I posted here, so I try to keep them in sight. Unfortunately I can't get through the start until they're long gone. First mile 10:23. I'm feeling pretty good and loose. Then comes trouble. Mile 2 8:43...close if not my best mile split ever. But I feel a pain in my back which decides to spasm on the downhill. It feels like a spear from my back through my chest. I'm thinking that if I'm having an issue, I'm going to have to pull over Mile 3 10:42 I actually catch the 2:20 pacer! I jump the barrier because there's a big pileup behind her. My back is feeling better. Mile 4 10:30 I start losing her again. Mile 5 10:28 I have no idea what happened to the pacer, and I never see them again. It's possible that I passed her. I don't know. The tunnel feels warm, but the sun has now risen above the fog on the Eastside.. I don't know how accurate 4/5 are, it might be an average. I feel like each mile should be about 10+ secs longer. Mile 6 10:49 This is like the doldrums of the race, although the view over the lake of the rising sun is spectacular. I also get a bit of a side stitch which lasts for a little while but fortunately clears up. Mile 7: 10:56 You can tell I'm starting to flag a little. I eat a pack of Sport Beans and some Gatorade. I pass the 1/2 marker and the clock says 1:16....right where I was last year at that point. Mile 8: 11:25 The infamous Galer. I run it, but my HR is shooting up Mile 9: 10:27 An up-and-down section. My pace is starting to return Mile 10: 10:53 I take a potty break when I come across a set of 5 which are all unbelievably empty. I'm in and out in a blink. Afterwards I feel a burst of energy and I really push it up the rest of the hill Mile 11: 10:46 Still feeling good, hoping to ride it while it lasts. Mile 12: 10:41 My left hip starts hurting. I think its from the extreme camber of some of these streets. I'm just hitting that hip a lot harder. I really start the fatigue setting in so I down some shot blocks. Mile 13: 10:29 I frankly don't know how I managed this time. Probably from stumbling down the downhill sections. The uphills here are brutal, even though they're not big. I do feel a small burst of energy before the last little hill, but that hill completely drains it. .1 My Garmin thinks I ran 13.43. I think it got messed up in the tunnel. So here are the happy totals: Previous Course time: 2:39:01 Current PR: 2:26:15 New PR: 2:21:45 I beat my previous PR by 4:30 and 21 secs/mile...and my course record by 17+ minutes. I got really close to the 2:18 that was posted too. I just checked the site...apparently my chip didn't register at the start...so I can't get accurate 1/2 way splits. My second split was 1:10:18 so I'm assuming the first was 1:11:27...a negative?? Kewl. Aside from the weird pains I had, my concern is that I ran this at an avg HR of 170 vs Seafair at 165. I know part of it is from pushing harder at the end, but I'd like to see it come down a little for this kind of race. I'm glad I met a bunch of Boomers, hope to see you at the next one! ------------------ -Andy Competing in 5Ks and HM's Google me! Hey, Andy,Congrats of a big PR!! When are they gonna stop coming boy? Negative split, when the second half has the most hills, you rock! Is your wife talking to you yet?? Flowers are always nice. I think there was something wonky with mile 4 to 5. It was mostly flat and I recorded my longest split there. Now I have to look closer at the medal. I missed that prophetic symbol. Maybe Tet ordered the medals for them. It was really great to meet you last night, and I hope to see you at some of the local races in the future (12k's of Christmas, Mercer half); smaller ones where there might actually be a chance of finding someone in the crowd. enke

Andy - we'll look forward to seeing you every year now now that you found the Pink Door secret to the Seattle Marathon/Half Success. The half's 7:30 am start is pretty much still the dark but we were getting the full rays for the full at 8:15. However, somehow my feet really got still got cold in the shady sections. I have one rule for a successful SM - run up Galer/Madison and Interlake without stopping. However, I never thought of doing it faster than on the flat sections along the lake too. you and enke are bad examples but we're so happy you joined us. Just tell dw that she's lucky it wasn't an ultra and she drove to the finish out in Carnation at 6pm and had to come back at 10pm! On the other hand, better not. Really nice to meet you and enke and Mr. Surprise.

Andy,Very nice race. You are making sure and steady progress. Nice negative split too. Not so good with mental miscalculation. You mean your wife doesn't know how long it takes you to run 13 miles? And you got to meet a bunch of Boomers! Sounds great! Congratulations!

Yay! I met the famous iapetus-not-Lapetus! I think there was a problem with their chip timing, Andy -- there was no beep when we crossed the mat! See ya at one of the future PNW races. (((frazzled Mrs. iapetus)))

Good job, Andy. That really is a hugh PR on what sounds like a fairly tough course (that is, anything with hills big enough to have names and reputations).Keep up the good work! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Nice race and PR, Andy! Wondering how many miles per week you run? I found that by increasing my weekly mileage (all easy), my HR started to drop quite a bit - both running and resting. PJ

Andy, your poor DW... I can just imagine my DH would be backtracking the course! Good job on the PR, that's amazing to have the negative splits. I think the Garmins are all messed up on the tunnel miles because they had to "guess" after regaining signal. I know mine was showing --:-- for pace through there. It was hot and stuffy in the tunnel, wasn't it? I was very happy to get out of there. So good to meet you and hope our trails cross again sometime!------------------ evanflein

I peaked at 28 a couple weeks ago before the taper. normally I'm in the 20-23 range. My plan is to do a lot of lower HR training in the next couple months ------------------ -Andy Competing in 5Ks and HM's My running/writing blog: http://blog.dawnsrise.com/2007/10/running-gear.html PS it's iapetus NOT Lapetus

OK not that anyone's listening at this point, but I finally found more data points: Chip time: 2:21:05 ...but my Garmin says 2:21:45 Which should I use?Place Male 2208/2634 AG: 314/612 Splits (which make more sense now) 01:09:38.5/01:15:53.0 Which I more or less confirmed with the Garmin ------------------ -Andy Competing in 5Ks and HM's My running/writing blog: http://blog.dawnsrise.com/2007/10/running-gear.html PS it's iapetus NOT Lapetus

Well ran race Andy. How does DW enjoyed her flowers? You gave her a bouquet of flowers, didn't you?I enjoyed readying your race report. I also was delighted to have met you at the Pink Door. Thanks for sharing your training tips with me and encouraging me towards a great race the next day. You are one great runner. I hope to be at the finish line when you run your first marathon.

It could have been worse -- it could have been a wife with two toddlers in tow waiting... (those are the kind of worries I had once upon a time...)I hope all is well at home now and the couch didn't screw up your back. Congratulations on your PR! And, hey, impressive that you ran up Galer, even if the heart rate did shoot up. That would be expected. Good to meet you AND thanks for the name clarification! I had to google it. Not exactly an astronomer. (I'm guessing mc got it right away. ) eta: Use chip time. [This message has been edited by Soundrunner (edited Nov-29-2007).]
