Topic: 5-Mile Turkey Trot - last race of the year. |

This is the 3rd year I have run the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot in Miamisburg, Ohio. The race is an out-and-back starting on the main street heading out of town on a 2-lane road, then returning the same way. With nearly 4800 people converging on this small town, parking can be a problem, so I got there early, picked up my packet and took it to the car, then jogged 2 miles to warm up. This race brings out all levels of runners and walkers, and last year I spent a lot of time weaving around groups of walkers who didn’t realize (and didn’t listen to the guy with the loudspeaker telling them) that they were supposed to be near the back, so this time I decided to line up near the front.15-25 mph winds weren’t my favorite conditions, but at least it was mostly dry, and not too cold (39 degrees). I was aiming at a 7:46 pace, based on McMillan’s projection using my Sept. marathon time, but I knew that my fitness has diminished since then, so really I was just hoping to beat last year’s time of 40:20. I was wearing 2 long sleeved tech shirts, both lighter weight, the bottom one being that slinky satiny stuff, but I realized by Mile #2 I was badly overdressed. I was sweltering. My Garmin said that my ave. HR for the first mile was 205 (how can that be?), and in the 170’s for the other miles – translate to I WAS HOT, okay? I knew I had to lose one of the shirts. But my Garmin was strapped overtop my sleeve, and I had headphones from my mp3 player, which was strapped in the back of my waistband, to deal with. So here I am, tugging my sleeve out from under my Garmin, holding my headphones in my teeth, and ripping my shirt off and tying it around my waist, all the while maintaining a 7:5X pace. I can hear Spareribs grinding his teeth from here. A little past 2 miles, we hit a turnaround, and I felt the blast of cold wind hit me. It actually felt good in my overheated state. I kept trying to find a big guy to draft behind, but those pesky fellas kept outrunning me. Then, as I’m working my butt off trying to finish strong, a little kid, maybe 7 years old, comes cruising by me like he’s out for a Sunday stroll. I tried to trip him, I mean catch him, but couldn’t. Garmin splits: Mile 1 – 7:49 Mile 2 – 7:47 Mile 3 – 8:02 Mile 4 – 7:59 Mile 5 – 7:45 Official Results: Time: 39:25 (7:53 ave pace) – PR OA 672/4796 Female 132/2291 AG 8/196 This is my last race of the year, and I am so glad I got to end the season with a PR. Out of 8 races this year, I have set 7 PR’s and 1 course PR. It’s been a fabulous and exciting race season for me, and I have been both amazed and humbled as I have surpassed all my own expectations. Maybe I’m really a runner after all. I owe so much of it to you Boomers, to all your encouragement and wisdom. THANK YOU!!

Ok Holly, next year you are banned from uttering "I'm not a fast runner," OK? Good job on your last race of the year. Way to close out the season, eh? ------------------ evanflein

Ho hum. Holly doesn't think she'll do well in her race. Holly almost pulls an Econo at the finish line. Holly blitzes the course with a PR, finishing way near the front of her AG.I agree with Erika: you're not allowed to sandbag us like this next year. But you are going to have another fabulous season, and I'm definitely going to be following your career with interest. Keep up the good work! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Holly, nice running and congrats on your PR. I couldn't quite break 40 minutes today myself but there you are...finding time to removing articles of clothing and tripping up your competition all while maintaining a 7:53 pace...talk about multi-tasking... ------------------ Me - Saucony Hurricane 8/Asics Gel Kayano 12 - FR305 My Log

I was thinking 7:45's at least when I posted this morning, and I stick to it as a conservative estimate, even after seeing your actual time. You had some tough conditions today. But as happy as I am for your success, I am convinced you have a faster runner inside you. I really liked the consistency of your splits today, a controlled race it seemed to me. I believe you can do five miles in 7:30's.Stick with what you are doing, and give some thought to what you are capable of from five miles to 10000 meters in January. I think the longer races short of the marathon, say five miles to the half are ideal races for you, given what I see you doing now. There has been awesome improvement for you in the last year. Be confident. Spareribs

Holly, this has been a fun year watching you evolve into one amazing fast runner. Congratulations on your great year. I know that your hard work is paying off. I also know that you only know the aches, pains, and struggles you had to go thru before you got here. I admire your determination as a runner. You have shown me that determination plus hard work plus love for running equals speedy times. From one of your great admirer in the PNW. Nancy

Good racing Holly and super results. All your PRs should be noted in pencil, since you'll be erasing them with faster results each time. Thanks for the reports and Congrats.CNY

Great job, holly. You sure did well for any conditions, let alone with the wind and shedding clothes while on the run. Congratulations on another PR. If you really want to race more this year, I can find some races in my area.TomS ------------------ My Profile

Great job Holly.I am with the rest, with the PR's you are doing almost every time and with the faster speeds each time, you are at the stage where you are well out of the range of being considered slow. A rest will probably be food for your body right now and also allow you to refocus on what you want to do in the next year. Thanks for the report. Joey
