Today I ran a 5K. Something I didn't think was possible a month ago. You see, I've had a big struggle with uncontrolled asthma for the last year & a half. I have always tried to run, & tried is the key word. But giving up doesn't seem to ever enter my mind. So, Johnny (the sweetheart) told me he'd run with me, whether it was walking, run/walking or running at whatever speed I needed to do for the breathing. Then some dust allergy problems in Sept & Oct stopped me cold. I started running again about 3 weeks ago after a pep talk from Johnny. So, why do I tell you all this? Its kinda background for those who don't know me, well to explain what a victory my 5K was for me today.I showed up early, signed up, and yakked with Tammy & John for a little while. Tammy & John went for a warmup run, and I went for a warmup walk. See I have to walk about 15-20 minutes before the bronchials are warmed up enough to run (at all). I met John right before the start, and told him the first 1/2 mile would be slow because of the bronchials, then I'd probably go faster along the way.. So off we went, the first mile and half was slightly uphill, so I tried to stay slow, so I could breathe. So, I alternated between letting the body run, and slowing myself down when the breathing was rough. John kept me entertained joking around... which was a really nice way to go for a run. Mile 1 was 12:21, which was exactly what I wanted to do. John took off to run with Tammy when we saw her (as planned) & came back to find me. I was just about at the turnaround when he caught me & he said wow you sped up some Mile 2 was 11:26 Then we were catching up to the lady in front of me. John said, I know you can pass her! lol now I'm thinking about trying to catch her. In a little bit, I actually sped up & passed her Then I could feel myself going faster, getting into a stride & I just felt good! Then John says to me, wow you're going 9:50 pace.. I actually starting thinking about breaking 35 for a bit, but the breathing was getting rough.. darn bronchials.. the legs really just wanted to go for it. So I slowed a little. Mile 3 : 10:22 . I missed turning the Garmin off right away, but it says 11:20 avg/mile Official time : 35:16 & its not a PW!!!! lol I was really expecting 36 or 37, but hoping to beat my PW time of 35:28. And I did it! Fashion Report: Gray Capris running pants, One short sleeve tech shirt & one long sleeve tech shirt. & was it really 50? it felt colder to me, lol the weather wimp that I am. I was 8/9 in my class (same class as Tammy) & beat about 8 people overall , so seems like Johnny didn't need to run in behind me after all.. but hey it was sure fun running with him Oh & props for this running club, they are so supportive! lots of people encouraging me along the way.. that was really, really nice.

Yay Linda!!! You did so good today. It was really a pleasure for me to get a chance to run alongside you for a while. Folks, she started off relatively slow, stayed focused, and then just started going faster and faster, catching and running down another runner in the last mile. By the time we got to the last turn and were heading for home, that runner was far behind us. Rinda, you're truly an inspiration, never giving up or letting your asthma get the better of you. Great job!!! Weather wimp, I don't know, it felt darned warm to me, musta been the company

Rinda, it's good to hear from you and extra good that you had such a great race. For as hard as you've fought your asthma and as good an attitude you've kept, no one is more deserving of a successful race. Congratulations.TomS ------------------ My Profile

Rindaroo - great to hear the asthma is a little better this month.....congrats on running a great race and it was neat how you described how you felt yourself speeding up and feeling great and then the bronchials began giving you trouble, you must know the signs of distress very well and know to slow down when you feel it. I admire your perseverence very much. This is my favorite line..."But giving up doesn't seem to ever enter my mind". arf

LindaRinda, You did it!! I'm so happy for you. Ever since I've known you, you work hard to build yourself up, and then get hit with something else. And then you step back & figure out how to go at it again. No matter how many times it happens. You sure earned this. WTG. You even slowed down when you needed to. (phew ;-) ) Congratulations!

Rindalina - remembering your careful laps around Hayward Field in April with us, this is a hugh victory for you and I'm very, very jealous of Joh, . .. I mean very, very proud of you. Incidentally, if it'd been a recent 5K up here in Seattle, you would have been 229th overall and beaten 487 other runners. [ETA] - thanks for the race info. It sounds like the small town variety, though attracting the more competitive runners, also is very supportive so hope you can become a regular more and more. You'll give inspiration not only the the kids but to their parents too and may even get some more running company because of it.[/ETA] [This message has been edited by Tetsujin30 (edited Nov-11-2007).]

John - Ok so it was warmer than it has been!! lol My hands weren't cold at all yesterday... Thanks everyone, you are all so supportive. Its been nice to have your support during my ups & down this last couple of years. Tet - geez this small fast race thing is a little intimidating. My prior 5Ks were all in big races & its easy to be anonymous. But I was pleasantly surprised how supportive this club was, even the kids... and I do mean kids (like 10-13 year olds). So, I think they'll be more of these races in my future

Keep up the good work! I also have asthma and it's gotten worse in the last decade, so I know what you have to deal with. With the right medications and a doctor who is willing to help you as a runner (instead of one that just tells you to not run or exercise), you CAN manage your asthma and overcome your obstacles. For instance, a few weeks ago broke 30 minutes on a 5K and I never imagined I could do it. No wheezing or coughing afterward! I'm running better than I did in high school.

What a fun report. Now I know that running under those conditions and dealing with all that you do, is NOT fun. But what is fun is that you don't let obstacles prevent you from doing what you want to do. To have done so well in this race is a HUGE accomplishment. Congratulations. Thanks for sharing this report. ------------------ vista129
