DW and I love this race. It's fall in Northern MI and it's a trail run where there's no hunting. Though DW isn't a runner, we often go to races together. The sun was shining and the skies were clear. With not even a trace of wind, we could not ask for a better day.

The racers are encouraged to dress in costumes and about 25% of the runners do. I wore a black ribbed Batman tank top, black shorts, a never wash MUG from Crusted Creations and shoes that used to be white and smelled like my MUG. As it was 42F I wore gloves as well. Rodney and Greg was there and it was good to see them.

As we walked to the starting line, it was clear that the grass and leaves were coated in frost so we had to make sure of our footing. As it was also hilly, I decided to shoot for a 26 min. finish.

The 5K is two loops through a cross country course. The start took us though the soccer field then along side a hill. Not up the hill nor down it...Along it. It makes for some odd running. After the first 1/4 mile one person,( hence forth know as "the dude in the blue jacket"), passed me as we turned into the hill. I do OK on hills, I've run enough of them but this fella went and passed me. We couldn't have that so I reached into my utility belt and pulled out a can of spinach and squeezed it really hard......and squeezed it really hard. After the third attempt I thought "Oh screw it" and threw it aside. I should have been more careful because it accidentally hit the dude in the blue jacket in the head. He decided it was a good time to take a nap and I passed him.

"Quitter", I muttered as I passed him. Later I was to learn he hadn't given up. As the course had a steep up hill, the back end of it was gentle and long. I made up some time as I set into longer, relaxed strides and passed a few more runners. Along the trail, a good sized tree had fallen and we had to jump on it then down on the other side of it. That was a first in a race for me and it was kewl. Never had to jump a tree in a road race. We went around a turn then across the soccer field again. The first lap was 14:09...Prolly couldn’t make the second lap in less than 12 min, but the race wasn't over yet.

The legs reached long and the soccer field was but a distant memory. Then back onto the hills. The dude in the blue jacket
passed me again. Darn it. I yelled "Go! Go! Gadget.........
Go! Go! Gadget....."Spoinky" Legs!!!". And it worked. I passed the dude in the blue jacket fair and square and went back down the hill though I only had 3:00 min left to meet my goal. Wasn't gonna happen. In the home stretch I got the pukey feeling and knew I was doing something right. I passed two high school kids and then down the finishing shoot. 26:51 with the dude in the blue jacket about seven seconds behind me. He must have been drafting.

When schools let us use their showers after races, I need to remember not to talk with naked strangers in public showers. DW doesn't like it when I make friends that way. I didn't place though finished 4th in my AG. A number of turkeys were given as door prizes. I got a kewl tech tank top. Though it doesn't have a Batsignal on it, it's still kewl.

After, we went to The Cherry Republic and got a jump on Christmas gifts and enjoyed the scenery on the way to Mom's house.

That must have been a tough race. You were morphing back and forth from batman to inspector gadget and popeye. Holy focus batman; focus.

Congrats on a good time with the dw.

I love your reports Steve!! You did a great job at the race today and narrowed in on your competition and managed to blow 'em down! There must be something in the boomer air today - this is now the third *4th in AG* report I've read.

Okay, smpankowski you might be oversharing a bit with this...

We can't have everything but maybe you could put in a request for next year!

Ha. I don't see a problem.

Your race reports are the funniest but I'm disappointed that you didn't include any photos. Congrats on the 4th AG. Sounds like a good time for you and DW.

Steve's RRs are always a "must read first" kinda thing. My kids are asking from the living room "what's so funny, mom?" as I snicker and snort thru these things. I think that's a really creative and smart way to take out the competition. Note to self: Pack can of spinach in Seattle marathon bag...

Thanks for the RR, batman, and I hear you can get decals or patches or some such to dress up that new ribbed tank top...

I don't wear the MUG to bed nor the shoes to church and it can't be me.

Another great report and race, smpankowski. It's clear you enjoyed the day with your wife, friends, beautiful course, costumes, and beating the dude in the blue jacket. Congratulations.

Good fun report.

I am glad to see you beat the "dude in the blue jacket". I really feel it was all in the can.

A race of costume does seem to require pictures of some sort.

Thanks for sharing this.....it was great

The usual good-humored RR from you, Steve, and not a bad race result either. But I keep wondering about all these Turkey Trots that are weeks ahead of the "proper" date. They must do things differently over there on the west coast of Mich.

Great job, Steve! Very entertaining RR too! You'd be on my list of famous people to have dinner with one night ... in fact, I'd bring my whole family. I could just imagine the surprises.

I hate that this is true.

In my recent 5K, there was a guy off to the side of the finish line chute puking when I came through at the end of the race. My DS saw him and was starting to comment on it when I stopped and leaned over, hands on knees. He looked SO relieved when I only coughed.

Another great race and report!

Hey, somebody make sure Econo learns about the cans of spinach. I don't think she'll have to actually hit any kids with one: the very sight of one should send them reeling out of the way.
