whoa, what a difference a year makes; congrats on a great new pr and, maybe more importantly, a great job in taming the marathon beast! your splits look great, and don't worry too much about the last 10k... happens to the best.re: stomach issues. take a look at some ab work, and much as i hate to admit it (ss: stop reading here) core strength work. it helps me to keep everything in place and happy, especially as the hours pile up in longer races. slowly add it to your training bit by bit, and after a few months i think it'll help. but no shopping cart incidents?

Somebody has to say it, Tramps..."weebles wobble but they don't fall over!" Congratulations, buddy -- nice job busting down that 4-0h barrier! I was so close to cheering you guys on -- while you were running, I was at my conference presentation 1 hour away. It sounds like you were having more fun than I was!

Very nice Tramps. That last 10K is always the race. The rest is just a long warmup. You ran great and planned it well.Bill ------------------ Bill's Profile

I felt good that I had planned this race well. My finish time was almost exactly what I had anticipated. I had the right clothes for the weather, the right fuel, hydration went well, etc. I was nice to have a little experience under my belt and to be prepared accordingly.Excellent, excellent! It made all the difference for you, and it showed in this extremely well-run race. I really was able to fully enjoy the whole event and experience. That’s the most important thing of all. But Tramps, wolfing down half a pizza immediately? I can barely eat after a run like that, and had to force myself to eat 1 piece of pizza after the AF marathon. Half a pizza would come right back up.

Tramps, you ran a great race. Getting everything right is like playing whack-a-mole, but something tells me you've got a few more PR's in you. Congratulations. Your story is so similar to mine that I can''t help but empathize.------------------ Fortunate--a volleyballer with a running problem Profile

Tramps - congratulations on a terrific race! You have to be thrilled and will be for weeks I'm sure. Quite a feeling getting under 3:50, eh? I'm really happy for you, especially seeing all that hard training paying off so well. I'm very impressed with your splits and the consistent pacing that you were able to maintain. It's very obvious you had a plan and stuck to it.I've come to the conclusion that the last 10k is tough no matter what race you run or how good a runner you are. That seems to be what marathons are all about ...that last 10k. You should feel good about the progress you've made in conquering this phase. Your results prove this out. As you know, I've been following your training over the past 4-5 months. I was impressed with your planning and I'm equally impressed with your execution. I'm guessing from your posts that you have learned tons and will only continue to improve. Congratulations once again on a great race and enjoy the next few weeks! Well done, marathoner!! PJ

Quite a difference in the weather this year from last year's huh? Thanks for taking the time to meet on Friday afternoon. That was a lot of fun and I appreciated you hosting us. It was also nice to see you briefly before the race on Saturday and to meet your DW. Thanks for your friendship and encouragement. Joey ------------------ vista129

Way to go Tramps. You have to be very happy with this one. I knew that you had been training for this race for some time, and to have it all pay off must be very fulfilling. No doubt you have a sub-3:45 in you and you came darn close this time.Congratulations!

Fantastic job, Tramps/David!You held on maintaining even splits right up until the last 2 miles. Even pacing and a solid training block gave you a terrific time. You had to do the work and you did. Congratulations! Now rest/recover and bask in the accomplishment before jumping into the next running adventure.

--> Solid, consistent training = solid, consistent race. ^^ Congrats on your massive PR! ^^ Thanks for the informative, entertaining, and colorfully illustrated race report. So, while I realize that you're most likely still basking in the afterglow and resting on your laurels, have you started contemplating your next 26.2-miler?? . . . . e k i M ~

Thanks for the encouragement! It's appreciated. The pizza comments are interesting. I really have learned that if I don't eat right away I get light-headed and a little nauseous after a hard race. Fruit juice and pizza seem to be the perfect antidote. A couple of quick responses to queries... quote: Originally posted by arf 1: You mentioned you took just water and electrolyte caps this time, as well as 4 gels....did you carry your own gels with you or pick them up at aid stations?
Definitely carried my own gels. I wouldn't risk getting an unfamiliar flavor or brand during the race. quote: Originally posted by Elaine3112: Will you be taking an ice bath?
It probably would have helped and I thought about it but I got chilled after the race and just couldn't bring myself to do an ice bath. I took a hot shower and sat in front of the wood stove for awhile! quote: Originally posted by ThunderBolter: have you started contemplating your next 26.2-miler??
I'm toying with not running a marathon next year; it's very time consuming to train and I need to be focusing on other things in my life. But we'll see. Too early to decide right now. [This message has been edited by Tramps (edited Nov-13-2007).]

Great execution, Tramps. Those are impressively consistent splits, but what's even more impressive is how you stuck to the plan and stayed mentally focus even when the going got tough at the end. Re stomach issues, did you take more Gatorade or gels than you normally do on long training runs? Sometimes late in a long race, my stomach just can't take the sugar anymore, and I have to switch to water. Just a thought... congratulations and enjoy your rest.

Tramps, you really did a great job on this one. A marathon is farther than I run in a week of training, so I have great respect for what you accomplished. As Jim said, you probably have faster marathons in you. So keep your mileage up, and some day when you feel like training for another marathon, it won't be a big stretch. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course
